Which FS2004 patch do I need?
The official FS9.1 update is the final base-simulator patch for a standard FS2004 9.0 installation. A normal 9.0 installation goes directly to 9.1; there is no chain of earlier service packs to install first.

FS9.1 does not update navigation data, modernise airports or patch third-party aircraft. Those require separate, FS2004-compatible add-ons.
How do I install the FS9.1 update?
Install FS9.1 over an intact FS2004 9.0 installation before applying any optional executable replacement.
- Check the installed version. If FS2004 already reports 9.1, do not run the update again.
- Close all related programs. Exit FS2004, weather engines, traffic tools, flight planners and any utility that may have a simulator file open.
- Make a backup. If practical, copy the FS2004 installation folder and the user configuration under
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\FS9. Preserve the activescenery.cfgas well, because its location can vary between Windows installations. - Restore original core files. Put back the original 9.0
fs9.exeif it was replaced by a no-CD or modified executable. Other altered core files can also cause the updater's file checks to fail. - Extract the updater. Unpack the download to a normal folder rather than launching it from inside a compressed archive.
- Run the installer with suitable permissions. On Windows installations protected by User Account Control, use the administrator option. If asked for a destination, select the FS2004 root folder containing
fs9.exe,Aircraft,ModulesandScenery. - Let the patch finish without interruption. Do not launch FS2004 or copy files into its directory while the update is running.
- Verify and test. Confirm version 9.1, then load a default aircraft at a default airport. This separates a base-simulator problem from an add-on problem.
If you own the original media and use an executable replacement for disc-free launching, apply a version-matched FS9.1 executable only after the official update has completed. A 9.0 replacement will not match the patched simulator.
How can I check whether FS2004 is updated?
FS2004 displays its installed version through Help > About Microsoft Flight Simulator. The reported version should begin with 9.1; alternatively, inspect the version information in the file properties for the particular fs9.exe launched by your shortcut.
Checking the shortcut target matters when more than one FS2004 installation exists. A common mistake is patching one copy while continuing to launch another.
Why will the FS2004 patch not install?
Most FS9.1 installation failures are caused by modified files, an unregistered installation path or insufficient permission to write to the simulator folder.
- Old file not found or file contents do not match: the updater found a modified
fs9.exeor another altered core file. Restore the original 9.0 files before trying again. - FS2004 cannot be found: the installation may have been copied or moved manually, leaving Windows with an outdated registered path. Reinstalling the base simulator is safer than guessing at registry changes.
- Access denied: close all simulator tools and run the extracted updater with administrator rights. Check that the FS2004 folder is not read-only.
- The simulator will not start afterwards: confirm that the active
fs9.exeis the patched original, then temporarily remove recently installed executable replacements or add-on modules and test again.
The installer finished, but FS2004 still shows 9.0
The patch was probably applied to a different FS2004 folder. Inspect the target used by the shortcut that starts the simulator, locate its fs9.exe, and compare that path with the folder selected by the updater.
Will FS9.1 remove my aircraft and scenery?
The official update normally leaves the Aircraft and Addon Scenery folders intact, but it can replace core simulator files. Backups protect customised configuration files and make it easier to identify changes made by older utilities.
Do not copy an entire pre-patch backup over the updated installation, because that can create a mixture of 9.0 and 9.1 files. Restore only the add-on content and configuration files you need, then obtain any required updates from our library of FS2004-compatible utilities, aircraft and scenery.
If the original core files cannot be recovered, the clean repair order is: install FS2004, launch it once, close it, apply FS9.1, verify the version, and then reinstall add-ons in small batches. Testing between batches makes the first incompatible component easy to identify.
