Find why FSX aircraft, buildings and scenery objects disappear, then fix culling, display settings, add-on conflicts, DX10 Preview and memory faults.
Aircraft, buildings and scenery objects disappear in FSX when the simulator culls distant or tiny models, a display setting suppresses them, an add-on is missing files, or a higher-priority scenery layer excludes them. DX10 Preview incompatibility, faulty level-of-detail data and 32-bit memory pressure can also cause vanishing or flickering.
What does the disappearing pattern tell you?
The scope and timing usually identify the cause before you change any settings.

How do I stop objects disappearing in FSX?
Use a controlled default flight, then change one variable at a time.
- Establish a clean baseline. Start a new flight with a default FSX aircraft at an unmodified default airport. If everything appears there, the problem is probably confined to an add-on rather than the core simulator.
- Check the relevant density slider.
Scenery Complexitycontrols many airport buildings and manually placed objects, whileAutogen Densitycontrols generated houses and vegetation. Raise each by one or two positions for testing. Mesh complexity and terrain texture resolution will not restore a missing terminal or hangar. Confirm that the affected scenery is enabled and its folder still exists. A higher-priority exclusion can remove default buildings even when the replacement objects fail to load, so disable the entire suspect package rather than moving individual files at random.
- Turn off DX10 Preview for a test. Restart FSX after changing it. Legacy aircraft and scenery models may be incomplete, invisible or incorrectly textured under DX10 Preview even though they work with the standard renderer.
- Undo configuration tweaks. A high
SmallPartRejectRadiusvalue can discard objects or model parts once they occupy too few screen pixels. Remove a manually added value or rename the activefsx.cfgorfsx_se.cfgafter making a backup, then allow FSX to create a clean file. Boxed FSX and Steam Edition can use different application-data folders, particularly when installed side by side, so reset the file FSX is actually updating. - Isolate recent add-ons. Disable suspect scenery packages in groups, restart the simulator and repeat the same view. Once the objects return, re-enable half the disabled group at a time until the conflicting package is identified.
Increasing LOD_RADIUS is not a general fix. It primarily affects the radius of detailed terrain and can increase memory use; it cannot repair a defective model LOD, missing object library or scenery exclusion.
Why does only one aircraft disappear?
If default aircraft remain visible, the affected add-on probably has a model, texture or compatibility fault.
Check that the selected variation in aircraft.cfg points to an existing model folder and that its model.cfg references the correct model file. An aircraft that vanishes abruptly at a particular distance may have a broken LOD chain; one that disappears only from certain angles may have incorrect bounding geometry. Those model faults normally require a corrected package rather than an FSX display tweak.
For a completely invisible or partly missing model, follow our add-on aircraft model and installation checks. If the aircraft remains visible but turns plain white, use the separate FSX texture-path and fallback checks instead.
AI aircraft are different. They may spawn or disappear when FSX rebuilds scheduled traffic around the user aircraft. If all AI traffic is absent, check the airline and general-aviation traffic sliders, active traffic files and any recently installed AI package.
Why do airport buildings and autogen vanish?
Buildings usually vanish because their density threshold is not being met or another scenery file excludes them.

Autogen Densityand verify that replacement ground textures retain their autogen annotation. - Objects from an add-on: confirm that all required object-library scenery is installed and enabled.
- Default objects missing only in one area: disable nearby add-on scenery and look for an exclusion conflict.
Missing ground textures and missing 3D objects are separate faults. If the airport surface appears but terminals, lights or clutter do not, concentrate on scenery complexity, object libraries and exclusions rather than terrain mesh.
Can FSX’s memory limit make objects disappear?
Yes, but memory pressure is likely only when the fault develops during a flight and appears with delayed textures, stuttering, corrupted graphics or an eventual crash.
Both boxed FSX and FSX: Steam Edition are 32-bit applications, even on 64-bit Windows. Dense autogen, high-resolution scenery, complex aircraft and heavy AI traffic can exhaust their usable address space. When is object pop-in normal?
Distance-based pop-in is normal when an object returns consistently as it grows larger on screen.
FSX models can contain several levels of detail, and the simulator stops drawing the smallest level beyond its intended range. Camera zoom changes an object’s screen size, so zooming in may make it reappear. Treat it as a fault when a large nearby object vanishes, only one add-on behaves that way, or the disappearance changes with camera angle rather than distance.
