The best free aircraft downloads for FSX and FSX: Steam Edition are complete packages such as the Boeing 747-400, Shorts Sherpa, Boeing 307 Stratoliner and Gulfstream One EX. Together they cover long-haul, STOL, vintage and business flying; choose according to virtual-cockpit quality, included gauges, documentation and native FSX compatibility.

Which free FSX aircraft are the best?

For most simmers, the strongest shortlist combines a familiar airliner with distinctive utility, vintage and business aircraft.

Best forAircraftWhy choose it
Long-haul airline flyingComplete freeware Boeing 747-400 packageA substantial four-engine widebody package for classic intercontinental routes and heavy-aircraft practice.
STOL and utility operationsShorts Sherpa utility aircraft downloadIncludes a virtual cockpit, modelled cabin and rear loading ramp, with handling suited to short-field operations.
Historic airline routesFreeware Boeing 307 collectionAn unusual early airliner supplied in multiple Pan Am and TWA variants.
Compact business flyingGulfstream One EXA smaller business transport for pilots who do not want another large jet or general-aviation trainer.

No ranking suits every pilot. The Sherpa is the most distinctive choice for hands-on flying, the 747-400 suits airline routes, and the Boeing 307 is the better pick if historic operations matter more than modern avionics.

These are complete packages, meaning they are intended to work without a separately downloaded base model. That does not make them study-level simulations of every electrical, hydraulic or navigation system.

How should I choose an FSX freeware aircraft?

Choose a free aircraft by its completeness, cockpit type, compatibility and intended role rather than by exterior screenshots alone.

  • Complete aircraft or repaint: A repaint contains textures for another model and will not work by itself. Look for a model, panel, sounds and an aircraft.cfg file, or clear documentation explaining any aliases.
  • Virtual cockpit: Confirm that a working virtual cockpit is included if you fly from the flight deck. Some older freeware provides only a 2D panel or external model.
  • FSX-native model: Native FSX aircraft generally behave better with FSX materials and cockpit views. Older ported models may show visual defects, particularly with DX10 Preview enabled.
  • Performance: Detailed models, large textures and complex gauges can reduce frame rate. A lighter aircraft may be the better choice on a system already struggling with dense scenery or AI traffic.
  • Documentation: A useful readme should identify installation folders, gauge requirements, starting procedures and any dependency on default FSX files.

Will free FSX aircraft work in Steam Edition?

Most manually installed FSX aircraft also work in FSX: Steam Edition because both use the same basic SimObjects\Airplanes structure.

The usual difference is the installation path. Older automatic installers may search for the boxed FSX directory instead of the folder containing the Steam Edition fsx.exe. Direct the installer to the correct FSX root where possible, or install to a temporary folder and inspect the files before moving them.

Compatibility is less certain with old gauges, external modules and aircraft converted from earlier simulators. Blank instruments, missing cockpit parts or opaque propeller textures usually point to an outdated dependency or rendering issue rather than a missing exterior texture.

Why does a downloaded aircraft not appear in FSX?

An aircraft usually fails to appear because its folder is nested too deeply, installed into the wrong FSX copy or contains only a repaint.

  • Check the folder level: FSX must be able to find aircraft.cfg inside the aircraft's main folder under SimObjects\Airplanes.
  • Extract the archive first: Do not place the ZIP file itself into the simulator.
  • Confirm the base model: Texture-only packages require the aircraft named in their documentation.
  • Check the aircraft selector: Search using the manufacturer, model and variation names defined by the package; they may differ from the ZIP filename.
  • Avoid overwriting defaults: Keep add-ons in their own folders unless the documentation explicitly instructs otherwise.

Our step-by-step FSX aircraft installation guide covers the folder structure and the most common missing-aircraft problems in greater detail.

Are free FSX aircraft study-level?

Most free FSX aircraft are not study-level, but the better complete packages provide convincing models, usable panels and enough functionality for normal simulator flying.

Choose freeware for the aircraft type and operation you want to experience. For procedural training, inspect the panel and documentation first: a detailed exterior model does not guarantee realistic autopilot logic, fuel systems or engine management.
