FSX & FSX: Steam Edition 4 min read

Why does FSX ATC mute my external speakers?

Ian Stephens
In short

FSX ATC muting your external speakers is usually Windows communications ducking or split audio routing. Fix both without losing ATC voices.

FSX ATC usually mutes external speakers because Windows treats the radio voice as communications audio and ducks other sound, or because FSX routes voices and simulator sound to different devices. Set Windows Communications to Do nothing, then select the same playback device for both sound and voice in FSX.

This applies to boxed FSX and FSX: Steam Edition. ATC should not switch off your speaker hardware: the timing of the interruption usually reveals whether Windows volume ducking, split routing or an audio driver is responsible.

How do I stop FSX ATC muting my speakers?

  1. Open the classic Windows Sound panel. Search Windows for Change system sounds, open the result and select the Communications tab.
  2. Disable communications ducking. Select Do nothing, then apply the change. The other options can mute or reduce aircraft, engine and environmental sound whenever Windows detects communications activity.
  3. Check the default playback devices. On the Playback tab, make your external speakers the Default Device. For initial diagnosis, also make them the Default Communications Device if that option is available.
  4. Match the FSX outputs. Open FSX Sound settings and set its sound and voice playback selectors to the same speaker endpoint. The wording can vary with the installed audio driver, but FSX normally provides separate selections for simulator sound and voice audio.
  5. Restart FSX and test an ATC transmission. Older applications may retain the audio devices detected at launch, so changing a Windows endpoint while FSX is running may not take effect immediately.

A mistake we see constantly is raising the FSX engine or environment sliders. That cannot correct Windows communications ducking because Windows reduces the signal after FSX has mixed it.

Can I keep ATC in a headset and aircraft sounds on speakers?

Yes. Select the speakers as FSX's main sound device and the headset as its voice playback device, but leave Windows Communications set to Do nothing. That gives you split audio without Windows reducing the speakers whenever ATC begins speaking.

Keep the headset connected before starting FSX and avoid leaving either selector on an ambiguous default if Windows frequently changes outputs. Our guide to checking separate ATC and simulator audio routes covers headset, mixer and communications-device conflicts in more detail.

What if Communications is already set to Do nothing?

If ducking is disabled, the problem is probably device routing or an audio-driver feature rather than ATC itself.

  • Open the Windows Volume Mixer while FSX is running. Confirm that FSX is not muted and is assigned to the intended speakers.
  • Check USB, HDMI and monitor outputs. Connecting a headset, display or controller with audio support can make Windows select a different endpoint.
  • Test exclusive mode. In the speaker device properties, temporarily disable the option allowing applications to take exclusive control. This is a diagnostic step, not normally required for FSX.
  • Inspect the sound-card utility. Some driver packages have their own communications, headset-detection or automatic speaker-muting controls that operate separately from Windows.
  • Watch for Bluetooth profile switching. Activating a microphone can move a Bluetooth headset from stereo playback to its hands-free communications profile, changing or interrupting the other outputs.

Why is ATC silent after changing the output?

FSX ATC becomes silent when its voice device points to a disconnected endpoint, ATC voices are disabled or the voice volume is at zero. Restore the intended voice playback device, verify the voice controls in Sound settings, then restart the simulator.

If menus and radios work but no controller or pilot speech is produced, follow our FSX checks for missing ATC voices rather than changing the aircraft sound sliders again.
