Why is ATC not working in FSX, and how do I fix it?

FSX and FSX: Steam Edition ATC usually stops working because the ATC window command is unassigned, COM1 or the avionics are off, the airport has no controller, no IFR plan is filed, voice audio is muted, or an add-on has changed airport data. A clean stock-aircraft test identifies the cause.

Searches such as no funciona in Spanish, nie działa in Polish and tidak terjadi apa apa in Indonesian all describe some form of “it does not work” or “nothing happens”. With FSX ATC, the exact symptom tells you which part needs attention.

What does “FSX ATC not working” mean?

Separate a missing window from a radio, airport-service, IFR or sound problem before changing simulator files.

Why does nothing happen when I open or select FSX ATC?

If the ATC window itself does not open, check the window command and keyboard focus first; radio power cannot prevent the window command from displaying the menu.

1. Create a clean test flight. Load a default FSX aircraft at a stock controlled airport. Avoid missions, multiplayer, saved flights and add-on scenery while testing. AI traffic may be set to zero: that removes background traffic calls but does not disable ATC for your aircraft.
2. Open ATC from the menu. Press the grave-accent key (`), normally near the number 1 key on UK and US keyboards. Keyboard layouts vary, so also try Views > Air Traffic Control.
3. Check the control assignment. If the menu command works but the key does not, open the Buttons/Keys controls page and find the command that displays or hides the ATC window. Reassign it to an unused key. Resetting all controls is unnecessary unless several default commands are missing.
4. Restore keyboard focus. Click inside the simulator before pressing the ATC key or a numbered response. Overlays, ATC utilities and other add-ons can capture the grave or number keys.
5. Recover an invisible window. If voices play but no panel is visible, the ATC window may be positioned on a disconnected monitor. Switch once between full-screen and windowed mode with Alt+Enter, reopen ATC and test in a newly created flight.
6. Wait for the frequency to clear. FSX queues radio transmissions. A selection may appear to do nothing while another aircraft or controller is speaking; wait for the call to finish before selecting the numbered option again.

Why does the ATC window open but show no useful options?

An open ATC window with limited choices normally means FSX cannot offer a controller on the active frequency.

1. Power the aircraft correctly. Turn on the battery, avionics master and radio equipment. Add-on aircraft may model extra electrical buses or radio power switches that default aircraft do not.
2. Use active COM1. FSX native ATC normally works through the active COM1 frequency. A mistake we see constantly is entering the correct frequency into the standby field but never swapping it to active.
3. Check Easy Communications. With Easy Communications enabled, selecting an available controller through the ATC menu can handle the tuning for you. With it disabled, tune and swap the frequency manually after each hand-off.
4. Confirm that the service exists. A small uncontrolled airfield may have no clearance delivery, ground or tower controller. Traffic announcements or nearest-airport choices can be normal there, not evidence of broken ATC.
5. Test a known controlled airport. Use a larger stock airport whose simulator information lists ground and tower frequencies. If that works, the original airport lacked the service or has incorrect add-on data.

Why are IFR clearance and vectors missing?

FSX provides IFR clearance, hand-offs and en-route instructions only when an IFR flight plan has been created and loaded; entering a route directly into the GPS does not file it with ATC.

Open Flight Planner, choose IFR as the flight-plan type, create the route and load it. If you do this after departure and FSX offers to move the aircraft back to the departure airport, decline that move unless you actually want to restart from there.

ATC can terminate IFR service when required calls or hand-offs are repeatedly missed. Keep the plan loaded and request IFR service again through the ATC menu if that option is offered; otherwise reload or re-file the plan. If you tune manually, check active COM1 after every hand-off.

Why does FSX ATC show text but have no voices?

If ATC text and menu choices work, the ATC system itself is operating and the fault is in audio playback, voice settings or installed sound files.

• Press Q once if all simulator sound has been toggled off.
• Open the FSX sound settings and raise the Voice volume. Engine and cockpit sliders do not restore muted controller speech.
• Select the intended Windows playback device before launching FSX. Its older sound system may continue using the device that was active at startup.
• If controllers are audible but your pilot does not speak read-backs, check the pilot-voice option.
• If captions are missing but voices work, enable ATC text or the message log in the simulator settings.
• If every controller remains silent while text works reliably, verify or repair the installation; recorded voice files may be absent or damaged.

Why does ATC fail only with one aircraft or airport?

If native ATC works with a default aircraft at a stock controlled airport, the core simulator is healthy and the affected add-on should be isolated.

• Add-on aircraft only: inspect its electrical buses, avionics switches and custom radio panel. Confirm that the required frequency is active on COM1, not merely entered into standby.
• Add-on airport only: disable that scenery package temporarily and repeat the test. Duplicate airport-facility BGL files, commonly called AFCAD files, can provide conflicting frequencies or controller data. Disable the package rather than deleting individual BGL files at random.
• Failure after installing an ATC utility: disable the utility and test native ATC again. Two programmes can compete for radio tuning, menu control or keyboard commands.
• Boxed and Steam installations together: make sure the add-on was installed into the edition you are launching. Side-by-side installations can leave aircraft, gauges or scenery in the other FSX folder.

Is strange FSX ATC behaviour always a fault?

Poor vectors, awkward runway choices and limited procedure awareness can be limitations of default FSX ATC rather than a broken installation.

When should I reset or repair FSX?

Reset configuration files only when ATC still fails in a new flight with a default aircraft, stock controlled airport, powered radios and correct COM1 tuning.

1. Back up custom settings. Save any control assignments and configuration tweaks you need before resetting or repairing files.
2. Use Reset Defaults for a missing command. If only the ATC shortcut is broken, reset or reassign controls instead of rebuilding the entire simulator configuration. Control assignments are handled separately from fsx.cfg.
3. Rebuild the active configuration if several settings are corrupted. Exit FSX, then rename rather than delete its configuration file. Boxed FSX normally uses %APPDATA%\Microsoft\FSX\fsx.cfg. Steam Edition may use that profile when installed alone or an FSX-SE profile in a side-by-side installation.
4. Test before restoring tweaks. Start FSX, allow it to create a fresh configuration and repeat the clean stock-aircraft test. Restore changes in small groups so that a bad setting can be identified.
5. Repair programme files last. Use installed-file verification for FSX: Steam Edition or the repair facility from the original boxed installation media. Back up edited default files because a repair can replace them.

Do not copy ATC DLLs, language folders or voice files from another FSX edition. Verification or repair restores a matched set of components and avoids creating a second fault through incompatible files.
