Can't see rain on cockpit windows in FSX? Check aircraft support, weather, configuration, graphics mode and damaged textures with these fixes.
FSX shows rain on cockpit windows only when the aircraft supports the windshield-rain effect, precipitation is active and the required textures render correctly. Test a default aircraft in heavy rain first. If rain appears outside but not on the glass, check the aircraft configuration, cockpit view, DirectX mode and shared rain textures.
How do I isolate the cause?
- Create definite rain: Select a rainy or stormy weather preset and park below the cloud layer. Cloud cover alone does not mean precipitation is active.
- Test a stock aircraft: Load the default Boeing 737-800 or Airbus A321 before testing an add-on. This separates a simulator-wide fault from missing aircraft support.
- Compare the views: Check the virtual cockpit, 2D panel and external view. FSX can render precipitation outside even when an aircraft has no cockpit-window effect.
- Restart after graphics changes: FSX does not always rebuild effects properly while a flight is running, so close and reopen the simulator before judging the result.
| What you see | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| No rain in any view | The selected weather is not producing precipitation, or an effects installation is damaged. |
| Rain outside but not on a stock cockpit | Shared rain textures or the graphics mode are preventing the windscreen effect from rendering. |
| Stock aircraft works, add-on does not | The add-on lacks native rain support or uses its own custom implementation. |
| 2D rain works but virtual-cockpit rain does not | The aircraft supports only one cockpit implementation. |
| Glass is black, milky or opaque | This is an alpha-transparency problem rather than a weather problem. |
Why is rain visible outside but not on the windshield?
External precipitation and windshield rain are separate FSX effects. An aircraft can fly through visible rain while its cockpit glass remains completely dry.
Check the aircraft.cfg rain setting
Make a backup of aircraft.cfg, found inside that aircraft's folder under SimObjects\Airplanes. In its [effects] section, look for:
windshield_rain_effect_available=1
A value of 0 disables the native effect. If the entry is missing, adding it may enable rain on aircraft designed for the FSX effect, but it cannot create suitable windscreen materials or animations in a model that never included them. If Windows blocks the edit, follow our instructions for saving aircraft.cfg without permission errors.
Check DirectX mode and shared textures
- Disable DirectX 10 Preview temporarily: Restart FSX and repeat the same weather test. The preview renderer can cause transparency and effect problems, particularly with older add-on aircraft.
- Restore modified textures: Weather, shader and texture packages can overwrite the shared files used by cockpit rain. Revert them individually rather than reinstalling several packages at once.
- Replace weak or damaged rain textures: Back up the existing files first, then try our replacement virtual-cockpit rain textures for FSX. They can restore or improve the native effect, but they will not add support to an incompatible aircraft.
- Repair the glass before the rain: If the canopy is opaque or incorrectly shaded, use the aircraft-glass transparency repair before troubleshooting precipitation.
Does every FSX aircraft support cockpit-window rain?
No. FSX and FSX: Steam Edition provide a native windshield-rain facility, but each aircraft must be configured and modelled to use it. Some add-ons display rain only on the 2D panel, some provide a custom virtual-cockpit effect, and others provide no windscreen rain at all.
If the stock aircraft works but one add-on remains dry, inspect that add-on's documentation and configuration rather than changing global FSX files. Copying textures or configuration sections blindly from another aircraft can produce opaque glass without adding a functional rain effect.
What if only one livery or add-on is affected?
If every variant of an add-on has the problem, its model or common configuration is the likely cause. If only one repaint is affected, compare its texture folder and texture-fallback entries with a working livery; a repaint can replace the window texture or its alpha channel accidentally.
Reinstalling that aircraft's original common textures is safer than copying unrelated windscreen files into its livery folder. Keep a backup because glass textures often control reflections and transparency as well as rain visibility.
Do FSX windscreen wipers clear the rain?
Usually not. On many FSX aircraft the wipers are visual animations and do not interact with the native rain layer. Only an add-on with a custom programmed effect may clear or sweep water, so moving wipers with unchanged raindrops is not by itself a fault.
