Why does FSX freeze while loading worldwide weather?

Ian Stephens
In short

Fix FSX freezing while loading worldwide weather: test Clear Skies, remove corrupt saved weather, disable injectors and reset FSX safely.

FSX usually freezes while loading worldwide weather because its built-in real-world weather service fails to return usable data, or because cached weather, a saved flight, or an external weather engine is corrupt or conflicting. Load Clear Skies first, disable weather injectors, then rebuild the affected weather and configuration files.

How do I fix FSX hanging on worldwide weather?

The fastest fix is to prove whether weather is actually the trigger, then remove one weather source at a time. A loading message shows the last stage FSX reached; it does not always identify the component that failed.

  1. Build a clean test flight. From Free Flight, select a default FSX aircraft, a stock airport, daytime conditions and the Clear Skies weather theme. Do not begin with the saved flight, add-on aircraft or detailed scenery that normally causes the freeze.
  2. Test each weather source separately. Try Clear Skies, another static theme and user-defined weather before selecting real-world weather. If static weather works but the worldwide download hangs, the online source or downloaded data is responsible.
  3. Stop external weather software completely. Close FSX and terminate the weather engine or injector, including any background process or automatic launcher. Do not run an external injector while FSX is also trying to download real-world weather. Steam users should also confirm that the utility supports their installation using our guidance on checking add-on compatibility with FSX: Steam Edition.
  4. Test without the saved weather file. A saved FSX flight normally has a matching .WX file beside its .FLT file. If only one saved flight freezes, back up that matching .WX file, move it out of the saved-flight folder and test again. Restore it if FSX rejects the save; otherwise recreate and resave the flight using a static weather theme.
  5. Reset FSX's generated configuration. Close FSX, find the active FSX or FSX-SE profile beneath %APPDATA%\Microsoft, and rename its configuration file with an .old suffix. FSX will generate a fresh one at the next launch. This also resets display, sound and controller settings, so keep the backup.
  6. Repair the stock weather files. Do this only if static themes also fail. Use Steam's file verification for FSX: Steam Edition or the repair option from the boxed FSX media. Back up modified default content first because repair or verification can replace files inside the simulator's Weather folder.

What does each weather test result mean?

The clean-flight result usually identifies which part of the weather chain is failing.

Is FSX real-world weather still reliable?

No, FSX's built-in real-world weather download is not a dependable source because it relies on ageing legacy online infrastructure. Reinstalling FSX cannot repair a remote feed that no longer returns valid data consistently.

Use a weather theme or user-defined conditions for the cleanest test. Our explanation of FSX real-world weather sources and safer replacement options covers the practical alternatives without relying on the original feed.

Can detailed weather cause an FSX out-of-memory failure?

Yes, detailed clouds and injected weather can push 32-bit FSX over its available address space when combined with a complex aircraft, high-resolution scenery and heavy AI traffic. This usually produces an out-of-memory message, a crash or a repeatable loading stall rather than a failure limited to the online weather download.

Test with lower cloud draw distance and coverage, then remove the aircraft, scenery and AI load one component at a time. If memory use is the deciding factor, follow our FSX address-space troubleshooting steps rather than repeatedly reinstalling weather files.

What if FSX also freezes with Clear Skies?

If Clear Skies freezes with a default aircraft at a stock airport, worldwide weather is probably not the real cause. The progress line may simply be the last message displayed before FSX encounters corrupt scenery, a faulty aircraft gauge, a damaged saved flight or a startup-module conflict.

Keep the clean flight and add scenery, aircraft and utilities back individually. If the stock baseline still fails after regenerating the configuration, use our systematic FSX crash and loading-failure checks to isolate the broader fault.
