Fix FSX freezing during installation with separate steps for boxed DVD and Steam Edition, including hidden prompts, bad media and partial installs.
FSX usually freezes during installation because Setup is waiting behind another window, the boxed DVD cannot be read, security software has blocked a file, or a previous attempt left damaged installer data. For FSX: Steam Edition, the usual equivalents are a stalled download, blocked file write or damaged local files.
Is FSX really frozen or waiting for something?
A greyed-out window or “Not responding” message does not necessarily mean FSX Setup has crashed. Boxed FSX can spend several minutes reading and decompressing large cabinet files, while Steam may show no network activity as it writes or unpacks downloaded data.
- Use
Alt+Taband inspect the taskbar for a disc-change request, licence prompt, Windows security warning or User Account Control window. - Open Task Manager and check whether Setup, the optical drive or the destination drive still shows changing activity.
- If the progress bar and all drive activity have stopped for an extended period, end Setup, restart Windows and use the relevant procedure below.
If installation has finished and FSX instead hangs at its splash screen or fails on first launch, use our modern Windows file-access and legacy-component checks; that is a start-up problem rather than an installation freeze.

How do I fix a boxed FSX installation lock-up?
- Restart before trying again. This releases files and installer processes left open by the failed attempt. Do not repeatedly start multiple copies of
Setup.exe. - Test the DVDs. Clean each disc from the centre outwards and try copying its complete contents to a temporary folder on a local drive. If Windows cannot copy a particular
.cabfile, reports a cyclic redundancy error or always stalls at the same place, the disc or optical drive is the problem. Try another drive if one is available. - Remove the partial installation properly. Use Windows' installed-apps control to uninstall FSX, Acceleration or service packs that appear there. Preserve any add-ons you need before removing a leftover FSX destination folder. Avoid registry cleaners and do not delete the Windows Installer cache.
- Clear temporary setup files. Open
%TEMP%and delete files Windows permits you to remove, then confirm that the installation drive has ample free space for both FSX and temporary extraction. - Run the original installer as administrator. Right-click the disc's Setup program and choose the administrator option. Close other installers and disc utilities. If trusted security software is blocking Setup, allow the installer explicitly or pause third-party real-time scanning only for the installation, then re-enable it.
- Use the exact error if one appears. A cabinet or source-file message needs the specific media checks for FSX Error 1335. A failure involving the installer engine or support files calls for our legacy InstallShield and Error 1607 fixes.
A mistake we see constantly is treating unreadable media as a Windows compatibility fault. If the same DVD file cannot be copied on another optical drive, changing compatibility settings will not repair it. Conversely, if every file copies successfully but Setup fails immediately, concentrate on permissions, temporary files and the installer engine.
How do I fix FSX: Steam Edition stuck installing?
FSX: Steam Edition does not use the boxed FSX installer, so DVD, InstallShield and boxed service-pack remedies do not apply.
- Check disk activity. Steam can stop downloading while it unpacks existing data. Let that finish if the library drive is still active.
- Restart Steam and Windows. Exit Steam completely rather than merely closing its window, reboot, then resume the installation.
- Check the library location. Make sure its drive has enough free space and is not read-only, disconnected, failing or controlled by cloud-synchronisation software.
- Clear Steam's download cache. Use the download-cache control in Steam's settings, sign back in if requested and resume the download.
- Verify the installed files. If Steam considers FSX installed but finalisation or first launch fails, open the game's properties and run the local-file integrity check.
- Avoid mixing editions. Do not point Steam at an old boxed FSX folder, and never apply the boxed SP1, SP2 or Acceleration installers to Steam Edition.
What should I install after boxed FSX succeeds?
Launch and close the base simulator once before adding updates or add-ons. For boxed FSX, install updates in their proper order: SP1 first, followed by SP2 if you are not installing Acceleration; Acceleration supplies the later update level itself. Test FSX after each stage. Installing the base simulator, both updates, Acceleration and several add-ons without launching between them makes it much harder to identify which installer caused the next lock-up.
