Can FSX be used for real-world pilot training?

Yes, Microsoft Flight Simulator X can support real-world pilot training by reinforcing checklists, instrument scans, navigation, radio procedures and flight planning. However, an ordinary home FSX setup is not an approved training device, cannot reproduce aircraft feel reliably and normally provides no loggable flight time or substitute for instruction in a real aircraft.

That applies to both boxed FSX and FSX: Steam Edition. Think of the simulator as an advanced chair-flying and procedural-rehearsal tool, not as a replacement for an instructor, an approved training device or actual flying.

What parts of pilot training is FSX useful for?

FSX is strongest when the lesson depends on recognising indications and following a repeatable procedure rather than feeling how the aircraft moves.

FSX can teach the geometry of an ILS intercept, for example, but it cannot reproduce the physical cues that help a pilot trim accurately, judge a flare or recognise an approaching skid. Treat every add-on flight model, gauge and checklist as something to verify. A polished cockpit can still represent a different engine, avionics fit or operating procedure from the aircraft used by a flying school. The real aircraft's approved documentation and the instructor's procedure take precedence.

Can FSX simulator time be logged?

Time spent using a normal home installation of FSX cannot ordinarily be logged as flight time or credited simulator training.

Some aviation authorities permit credit in a specifically approved aviation training device or flight simulation training device, subject to instructor, course and hour limits. Approval applies to the complete device and configuration—hardware, software, controls, visual system and documentation—not merely to the FSX software running inside it.

Do not enter home FSX sessions as aircraft time, simulated instrument time or approved simulator credit unless an authorised instructor or training organisation has confirmed that the particular device and exercise qualify under the applicable regulations. Informal sessions can instead be recorded in a separate practice diary for debriefing.

How should a student pilot use FSX without learning bad habits?

The safest method is to learn the procedure from an instructor or authoritative aircraft documentation first, then use FSX for structured repetition.

  1. Set one training objective. Practise a defined task such as maintaining an instrument scan, intercepting a VOR radial or completing a before-landing flow. Unstructured flying makes errors harder to identify.
  2. Match the training aircraft. Use the closest available variant, panel arrangement, units and navigation equipment. A Cessna 172 training model with enlarged instruments can help a beginner read the panel, but its altered presentation should not be mistaken for exact cockpit familiarisation.
  3. Use verified procedures and data. Follow the real aircraft checklist and current operational charts rather than inventing a procedure from what appears to work in the simulator. Before practising navigation, account for FSX's ageing navigation database and update options; frequencies, runways and procedures may no longer match real operations.
  4. Configure the controls sensibly. Calibrate the yoke or stick, throttle and pedals, use only enough null zone to suppress hardware noise, and disable auto-rudder when pedals are fitted. Do not alter sensitivities merely to make an unstable technique appear smooth.
  5. Fly the exercise in real time. Avoid slew mode, repeated instant resets and time acceleration during procedural practice. Pause for instruction if needed, but restart from a properly established condition rather than salvaging an approach that should have been discontinued.
  6. Debrief every session. Record the objective, weather, route, configuration, errors and corrective action. An FSX session-recording and checklist tool can provide more structure than relying on memory alone.

A mistake we see constantly is using trial and error to teach an unfamiliar manoeuvre, then repeating the resulting technique until it feels normal. Repetition only helps when the underlying procedure is correct.

When is an approved simulator or real aircraft better?

An approved training device is the better choice when regulatory credit, validated handling, instructor assessment or accurate system behaviour is required.

  • Choose home FSX for inexpensive checklist repetition, instrument scanning, route familiarisation and rehearsing a procedure already taught correctly.
  • Choose an approved training device for eligible logbook credit, structured instrument instruction and exercises requiring validated equipment and performance.
  • Choose the real aircraft for control feel, trim, lookout, crosswind technique, take-offs, landings and recognising physical cues such as acceleration or buffet.

For a student pilot, FSX works best between lessons: brief the exercise with an instructor, practise the correct sequence at home, then have the technique checked in an approved device or aircraft. Used that way, it can save airborne lesson time without pretending to provide experience it cannot reproduce.
