Why can't I enable speed hold in FSX Steam Edition?

FSX: Steam Edition does support speed hold, but the command only engages when the loaded aircraft and its panel implement the relevant airspeed-hold or autothrottle system. On compatible default aircraft, use the cockpit speed control or Ctrl+R; on complex add-ons, use the aircraft’s own controls and satisfy its electrical and arming requirements.

How do I enable speed hold in FSX Steam Edition?

Use the aircraft’s cockpit controls first, because the correct method depends on whether speed is controlled through autopilot pitch or autothrottle thrust.

  1. Establish a stable flight condition. For diagnosis, begin in a steady climb or level flight rather than during rotation or final approach.
  2. Power and arm the system. Confirm that the relevant electrical, avionics and autopilot systems are operating. If the aircraft uses autothrottle, move its A/T arm switch to the armed position.
  3. Select the target speed. Set the required IAS or Mach value in the panel’s speed window before engaging the mode.
  4. Engage the correct mode. Press the cockpit’s SPD, IAS or MACH button. For FSX’s native airspeed-hold event, the default keyboard command is Ctrl+R.
  5. Check the annunciation. Look for an active SPD, IAS or MACH indication. An illuminated autopilot master does not by itself mean that speed hold is active.

Ctrl+R is separate from the autothrottle commands. Shift+R arms autothrottle, while Ctrl+Shift+G invokes take-off/go-around mode rather than normal cruise speed control. Our FSX keyboard command reference lists these controls separately.

Why does Ctrl+R do nothing?

Ctrl+R will have no useful effect when the aircraft does not support FSX’s native airspeed-hold event or an add-on replaces it with custom logic.

  • The aircraft lacks speed hold: many light aircraft have altitude and heading modes but no automatic speed control. A speed selector or SPD/IAS button is a useful clue, although panel design varies.
  • The add-on ignores native commands: sophisticated aircraft often require mouse operation of the mode-control panel. Generic FSX shortcuts may be ignored deliberately.
  • Autothrottle is not armed: pressing SPD cannot command thrust if the aircraft requires A/T to be armed first.
  • The command is missing or duplicated: open FSX’s Buttons/Keys controls and find “Airspeed hold (on/off)”. Reassign it if necessary, and remove duplicate joystick or switch bindings that immediately cancel the mode.
  • The panel is not powered: a cold-and-dark aircraft may display switches without allowing its autopilot computer or servos to engage.
  • A saved flight restored conflicting modes: test from a fresh free flight to rule out a corrupted or unsuitable saved cockpit state.

Do not edit aircraft.cfg merely to force the option into an unsupported aircraft. A configuration flag cannot add a working panel, autothrottle logic or suitable flight-control behaviour.

Why does speed hold engage but the airspeed still change?

An active speed mode can still lose speed when the aircraft lacks autothrottle, has insufficient thrust or is being commanded to follow an incompatible vertical path.

With altitude hold or vertical-speed mode active and no autothrottle controlling power, the pilot must adjust the throttles. During a steep climb, even full thrust may be insufficient for the selected speed; during descent, idle thrust may not slow the aircraft without reducing the descent rate or adding drag.

Also check whether the panel is holding IAS or Mach. Selecting the wrong mode or target can make the displayed indicated airspeed appear to drift, particularly during a climb or descent. Small temporary variations in turbulence are normal; a continuing rise or decay points to power, drag or mode selection.

Is speed hold different in FSX: Steam Edition?

No. FSX: Steam Edition retains the core FSX airspeed-hold command and aircraft configuration model; Steam does not impose a global lock on the feature. If speed hold works in one aircraft but not another, the cause is almost certainly aircraft capability or custom panel logic.

If it fails in every compatible aircraft, test a fresh flight, operate the cockpit button directly, then check the keyboard and controller assignments. A successful panel test with a failed Ctrl+R test identifies an input problem; success in a default aircraft but failure in an add-on identifies aircraft-specific logic or installation as the likely cause.
