Why can't I enable speed hold in FSX Steam Edition?

FSX: Steam Edition has a speed-hold command, but it only works when the selected aircraft and panel support it. Set the target speed, arm autothrottle if fitted, then engage SPD/IAS/MACH or press Ctrl+R. If nothing happens, the usual cause is an unsupported aircraft, custom add-on logic, missing power or a conflicting control binding.

How do I enable speed hold in FSX Steam Edition?

Use the cockpit controls where possible, because FSX and FSX: Steam Edition do not provide one universal speed-control system for every aircraft.

  1. Choose an aircraft with speed control. Look for a speed selector and a button marked SPD, SPEED, IAS or MACH. Many light aircraft have heading and altitude modes but no automatic speed control.
  2. Stabilise the aircraft. Test in level flight at a sensible speed, not during take-off, approach or a steep climb.
  3. Power the system. Confirm that the battery, generators, avionics and autopilot-related systems required by that aircraft are operating.
  4. Select the target. Set an IAS or Mach value close to the present speed. This avoids mistaking normal acceleration or deceleration for a fault.
  5. Arm autothrottle if fitted. Move the cockpit A/T switch to ARM. The default keyboard assignment is Shift+R, although custom aircraft may ignore it.
  6. Engage the speed mode. Press the panel’s SPD, SPEED, IAS or MACH button. Ctrl+R sends FSX’s native airspeed-hold command, but it cannot add the function to an aircraft that lacks it.
  7. Check the mode indication. Confirm that the speed mode is active rather than merely armed. The autopilot master light alone does not mean speed hold is engaged.

How can I test speed hold in a default aircraft?

The default Boeing 737-800 provides a useful isolation test because it includes a speed selector and autothrottle controls. Start a fresh flight with the aircraft already stable and its systems powered, select a speed near the present IAS, arm A/T and press the cockpit SPEED button.

If the cockpit button works but Ctrl+R does not, the aircraft is capable and the keyboard assignment is the likely fault. If the default aircraft works but an add-on does not, investigate that add-on’s panel, start-up state and custom operating procedure instead of changing global FSX settings.

What does speed hold actually control?

Speed hold may control thrust or pitch, depending on how the aircraft and its panel were built.

A mistake we see constantly is expecting altitude hold or the autopilot master to maintain airspeed. I pressed Ctrl+R and it didn’t work — what should I check?

If Ctrl+R does nothing, first determine whether the fault follows the aircraft, the panel control or the keyboard command.

Open FSX’s control settings and locate Airspeed hold (on/off) under Buttons/Keys. Reassign it if necessary, then remove duplicate joystick, yoke or switch bindings that may send a second command and cancel the mode immediately.

Complex add-ons often bypass FSX’s native event and require mouse operation of their mode-control panel. If the expected panel or gauge is absent altogether, follow our checks for a missing FSX add-on autopilot panel. Do not edit aircraft.cfg simply to expose the option: a configuration entry cannot create the required gauge, autothrottle logic or suitable flight-control behaviour.

Why is the airspeed changing even though speed hold is on?

An active speed mode cannot guarantee the selected speed when it reaches its thrust or pitch limit, receives conflicting input or is holding Mach rather than indicated airspeed.

  • The mode is only armed: a selected target and an armed A/T switch do not prove that SPD is active. Check the mode annunciation.
  • The aircraft has reached a limit: full thrust may not maintain the selected speed in a steep climb. At idle thrust, a steep descent may still cause acceleration unless you reduce the descent rate or add drag.
  • Power is still manual: an IAS pitch mode may hold speed by changing pitch while leaving the throttles entirely to you.
  • A vertical mode is taking priority: aggressive vertical-speed or altitude-capture commands can temporarily move the aircraft away from the target, particularly in simplified or custom panels.
  • MACH rather than IAS is selected: indicated airspeed can change with altitude while the commanded Mach number remains steady.
  • A controller is fighting the system: throttle-axis noise or movement can override or disturb autothrottle in some aircraft. Leave the hardware throttle still during the test.

Allow a short period for the aircraft to settle after selecting a new target. Small changes in turbulence are normal; a continuous rise or decay means the system lacks sufficient control authority or the expected speed mode is not active.

Is speed hold different in FSX: Steam Edition?

No. FSX: Steam Edition retains the core FSX airspeed-hold and autothrottle commands; Steam Edition does not impose a global lock on speed hold.

The practical difference is add-on compatibility. An aircraft built for boxed FSX may depend on custom gauges, panel files or supporting components that were not installed correctly for Steam Edition. If speed hold works in a default aircraft but not in one add-on, the simulator’s global command is working and the fault is specific to that aircraft or its installation.
