Why is an FSX add-on aircraft's autopilot panel missing?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Fix a missing FSX add-on autopilot panel by checking popup windows, panel.cfg, panel variants, aliases, gauge files and Steam Edition paths.

In FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, an add-on autopilot panel is usually absent because the aircraft has no separate popup, the wrong panel variant is active, or its panel.cfg, alias or gauge files were not installed correctly. First check Views > Instrument Panel, then inspect the aircraft's active panel folder.

Is the autopilot panel really missing?

An aircraft may have its autopilot controls on the virtual-cockpit glareshield, main 2D panel, radio stack or flight-control panel rather than in a dedicated window. Some aircraft—especially older, basic or historically accurate models—do not include an autopilot at all.

Open Views > Instrument Panel and look for names such as Autopilot, Flight Control, AFCS, MCP or Radio Stack. Popup keyboard assignments follow the order in panel.cfg, so a shortcut that opens the autopilot in one aircraft may open something else in another.

How do I restore a missing FSX autopilot panel?

Restore the panel by identifying the active panel configuration and replacing missing definitions or files from the add-on's original archive.

  1. Confirm that the add-on includes one. Check its supplied documentation and examine the virtual cockpit, main panel and radio stack. If the developer never provided an autopilot panel, changing a window shortcut will not create one.
  2. Find the active panel folder. Open the aircraft's folder under SimObjects\Airplanes, back up aircraft.cfg, and inspect the selected aircraft or repaint's [fltsim.x] block. An empty panel= normally selects the panel folder; a value such as panel=wide selects panel.wide. If only one livery is affected, compare this value with a working livery from the same package.
  3. Inspect panel.cfg. Back up the file before editing it. A separate popup normally has a line in [Window Titles] and a corresponding numbered [WindowXX] section containing its gauge entries. Check for missing sections, duplicate numbers and accidental edits, but do not renumber windows or change their ident values without the original configuration for reference.
  4. Restore the gauge files. A line beginning with a name such as gauge00= references a gauge stored locally in the panel folder or in FSX's main Gauges folder. Re-extract or reinstall the complete package rather than copying an unrelated autopilot gauge from another aircraft. Our FSX aircraft installation checks cover the folders and support files commonly missed during manual extraction.
  5. Check panel aliases. Some add-ons contain a small panel.cfg that redirects FSX to another aircraft's panel. The target aircraft and panel folder must exist under the same active FSX installation. A broken alias often removes the whole panel rather than only the autopilot window.
  6. Verify the simulator path. With boxed FSX and Steam Edition installed side by side, a legacy installer can place files in the inactive copy. Reinstall into the FSX root that contains the executable you actually launch. Our guide to add-on compatibility and Steam Edition installation problems explains why older installers and dependencies can fail.

What if the autopilot window appears but is blank?

A listed window that opens blank is a gauge-loading problem, not a missing popup definition. Check that every referenced gauge and dependency was installed, accept FSX's gauge trust prompt when appropriate, and test without DX10 Preview if the add-on uses older gauges.

Blank displays, missing needles and empty gauge cut-outs require a different set of checks; follow our troubleshooting steps for blank FSX cockpit instruments rather than adding another window section.

Will editing the aircraft.cfg autopilot section add the panel?

No. The [autopilot] section in aircraft.cfg defines autopilot capabilities and behaviour; it does not draw an autopilot panel or create a popup window.

Likewise, working keyboard commands do not prove that the add-on includes a visible panel. FSX can operate supported autopilot variables without a dedicated interface. If the panel is visible but the autopilot will not engage, check electrical and avionics power, the aircraft's operating instructions and its autopilot configuration instead of changing [Window Titles].
