How do you aerotow a glider and fly after release?

An aerotow starts with a briefing, checked tow rope and weak link, then a smooth take-off at the agreed speed while the glider holds the prescribed tow position. At release height, the glider pilot checks for traffic, releases, confirms separation, turns as briefed, trims for soaring speed and preserves a safe landing option.

In real-world aviation, this is a coordinated operation requiring qualified instruction, approved aircraft procedures and local club rules. Turn directions, tow positions, signals and emergency decision heights are not universal, so the following sequence cannot replace training in the aircraft concerned.

What happens during an aerotow?

A safe aerotow depends on both pilots agreeing the plan and making small, predictable control inputs.

  1. Brief the tow: Agree the tow speed, route, release height and area, normal separation turns, signals and actions for a rope break, engine failure or failed release. The glider pilot must also know where to land at each stage of the launch.
  2. Inspect the equipment: Check the tow hooks, rope, rings and correctly rated weak link against the aircraft manuals and local requirements. Both release mechanisms must operate freely. The tow pilot also confirms that aircraft performance is adequate for the glider, runway, wind, surface and density altitude.
  3. Prepare the glider: Complete the type-specific pre-take-off checks, including controls, ballast, trim, canopy, harnesses, airbrakes or spoilers, instruments and release. A trained ground crew member connects the rope and uses the approved signals; the towplane does not move merely because the rope appears attached.
  4. Take up the slack: The tow pilot taxis forward gently until the rope is straight, without jerking the glider. Full take-off power is applied only after the glider is ready, the wing is level and the launch signal has been received.
  5. Control the ground roll: The glider pilot keeps the wings level with aileron and follows the towplane with rudder. If a wing drops far enough to risk dragging a tip, releasing is safer than trying to rescue a badly destabilised launch.
  6. Hold position after lift-off: The glider normally becomes airborne first and remains just above the runway until the towplane lifts off. Climbing too early can raise the towplane's tail and force its nose towards the ground.
  7. Follow through the climb: Maintain the prescribed high- or low-tow position using small corrections. Most pilots are taught a high-tow position above the wake, but some operations use low tow; changing between them requires the specific technique taught by the instructor. The glider follows the towplane's path through turns rather than cutting inside it.
  8. Release cleanly: At the agreed point, check the surrounding airspace, stabilise the glider and operate the release. Confirm visually that the rope has separated before beginning the briefed turn.

If the glider moves so far out of position that the towplane is lost from view, or the towplane is being pulled into an unsafe attitude, the glider pilot should release immediately. The tow pilot may also release the rope if the glider is endangering the towplane.

What should the glider pilot do after release?

After separation, the glider pilot must establish safe speed, maintain lookout and decide promptly where the aircraft can soar or land.

  • Confirm separation: Look for the released rope and towplane rather than relying only on the sound or feel of the release.
  • Make the agreed separation turn: A common convention is glider right and towplane left, but local procedures take precedence. Do not assume that convention at an unfamiliar airfield.
  • Set the aircraft up: Establish the appropriate soaring speed, trim it, and complete any type-specific actions involving retractable gear, flaps, ballast or a motor system.
  • Resume a full lookout: Other gliders may be joining the same lift, and concentrating on the variometer can hide a developing collision risk.
  • Preserve a landing option: Track height, wind, distance from the airfield and reachable landing areas. A weak thermal is not a reason to drift beyond a safe return or landing range.

The glider should not turn abruptly into suspected lift until clear of the towplane and rope. Once clear, the pilot can search for rising air, follow the planned cross-country route or position for the circuit.

What does the tow pilot do after release?

The tow pilot confirms that the glider has separated, follows the briefed turn and begins the return without passing close beneath the glider.

The towplane may return with the rope attached or use an approved rope-drop procedure. That choice depends on the airfield and operator; a trailing rope introduces clearance and snagging hazards near people, vehicles, fences and runway lights.

What if the rope breaks or the release fails?

The immediate priority after a rope break or accidental release is to lower the nose as necessary, regain the correct airspeed and land using the pre-briefed plan.

At low height, that usually means landing ahead or choosing a suitable area requiring only modest turns. An automatic low-level turn back towards the runway is dangerous. At greater height, an abbreviated circuit or return may be possible, but only when the pilot has sufficient height and has been trained for that airfield's procedure.

If the glider release does not work, operate it again and use the locally briefed failed-release signals and procedure. The tow pilot may release from the towplane end, leaving the rope attached to the glider; that creates a serious snagging hazard and requires the operator's established landing plan rather than improvisation.

How do you practise glider towing in a flight simulator?

A simulator is useful for learning tow geometry, gentle corrections and the sequence after release, although simplified rope physics and towplane behaviour cannot reproduce every real-world hazard.
