How should you use a simulator for first solo preparation?
The best approach is to make each simulator session match a lesson objective agreed with your instructor. Unstructured repetition can reinforce errors just as efficiently as correct technique.
- Get the correct profile. Ask your instructor for target speeds, flap policy, circuit altitude, power references, radio calls, local noise procedures and go-around criteria. Do not substitute values supplied by a different aircraft model or flying school.
- Match the training aircraft. Select the closest available variant and use a representative fuel load, runway and cockpit view. Differences in engine, propeller, flap system or avionics can change the correct procedure.
- Configure sensible controls. A yoke or stick and rudder pedals are more useful here than extra instrument panels. Use only enough dead zone to stop genuine controller jitter, and avoid auto-rudder or strong assistance unless an accessibility need requires it.
- Fly complete circuits. Taxi, complete checks, take off, climb, turn, configure, make the calls, land and clear the runway. Speak each action aloud and keep the visual scan outside instead of staring at the panel.
- Practise abandoning the approach. Rehearse going around from different points once your instructor has taught the procedure. The aim is to make the decision prompt, not to rescue every unstable approach.
- Review one or two errors. Use replay or flight tracking to inspect spacing, altitude, speed and centreline control. Correct the cause on the next circuit rather than chasing a perfect landing-rate score.
What simulator habits can hurt real-world flying?
The main risk is negative transfer: learning a response that feels successful in the simulator but is wrong in the aircraft. A mistake we see often is treating repeated simulated landings as proof that the real flare has been mastered.
- Flying head-down: A visual first solo demands an outside scan. Use instruments for brief confirmation rather than following the panel around the entire circuit.
- Memorising the wrong procedure: Simulator aircraft and built-in checklists may not match the exact model, modification state or school policy.
- Overcontrolling: Short desktop controls and weak centring forces encourage large inputs. Use small corrections, but do not expect real control pressure to match.
- Trusting simulated ATC: Built-in controllers may use unsuitable phraseology or make unrealistic decisions. Practise the calls your instructor teaches.
- Forcing a landing: A simulator makes it tempting to continue from a poor position. Apply the school's stability criteria and go around when they are not met.

Does home simulator time count towards first solo requirements?
An ordinary entertainment simulator usually does not count as flight time or satisfy required training before solo. Credit depends on the aviation authority, the device's approval status, the approved curriculum and, where required, supervision by a qualified instructor.

How do you know when you are ready to solo?
You are ready when your instructor sees safe, consistent performance in the real aircraft and confirms that every legal and training requirement has been met. A simulator score, smooth virtual landing or number of hours cannot replace that judgement.
Before authorising solo, an instructor will normally expect you to demonstrate:
- consistent aircraft control and airspeed management;
- a reliable visual scan and awareness of other traffic;
- correct circuit spacing, radio work and runway procedures;
- stable approaches, safe landings and prompt go-arounds;
- the abnormal and emergency actions taught for that aircraft; and
- sound judgement about weather, wind, fuel and when not to fly.
