How do I install and configure ReShade for FSX?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Install and configure ReShade for FSX or FSX: Steam Edition, choose the right DirectX API, tune effects, and fix crashes or missing overlays.

To install ReShade for FSX or FSX: Steam Edition, run the ReShade installer, select the actual fsx.exe, and choose the API that matches FSX’s DirectX mode. Install a shader package, start FSX, open the ReShade overlay, create a preset, and enable only a few lightweight effects first.

Which DirectX option should I choose for FSX?

Your ReShade API must match the DirectX mode selected inside FSX. Check the simulator’s graphics settings before installing; changing the Preview DirectX 10 option later may require ReShade to be reinstalled for the other API.

FSX graphics modeReShade installer optionProxy file normally used
Default mode with DirectX 10 Preview disabledDirectX 9d3d9.dll
DirectX 10 Preview enabledDirectX 10/11/12dxgi.dll

ReShade does not repair FSX’s native DirectX 10 rendering faults, missing textures or incompatible add-ons. It only post-processes the completed image. Steam users dealing with uncertain installation folders can consult our Steam Edition folder and add-on compatibility notes.

How to install ReShade for FSX

ReShade must be installed beside the simulator executable, not in Addon Scenery, Modules or a separate preset folder.

  1. Close FSX and related utilities. Shut down the simulator before changing graphics wrapper files.
  2. Find the real executable. A typical boxed installation places it under C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\fsx.exe. A typical Steam installation uses C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX\fsx.exe, although a custom Steam library may be elsewhere. Do not select a desktop shortcut or Steam.exe.
  3. Check for an existing graphics wrapper. Look beside fsx.exe for files such as d3d9.dll or dxgi.dll. ENB, SweetFX and other graphics tools may use the same names. Back up any existing file and identify what installed it before proceeding; blindly overwriting one is a common cause of startup crashes.
  4. Run an unmodified ReShade installer. Select fsx.exe and let the installer detect FSX’s 32-bit architecture. Do not manually substitute a 64-bit ReShade DLL. If Windows denies access to a protected installation folder, rerun the installer with administrator permission.
  5. Select the matching rendering API. Choose DirectX 9 for normal FSX rendering or the grouped DirectX 10/11/12 option when DirectX 10 Preview is enabled.
  6. Install a small shader selection. Begin with the basic colour, sharpening and anti-aliasing effects offered by the installer. Selecting every package creates a cluttered overlay, increases shader compilation time and makes errors harder to isolate.
  7. Launch a simple free flight. ReShade should display a short banner while FSX starts. Open its overlay—normally with the Home key—and complete the built-in tutorial.
  8. Create a separate preset. Give the preset a recognisable name and save it as an .ini file. If FSX is under Program Files and changes will not save, use a writable preset folder under your Windows user profile rather than disabling User Account Control.

What ReShade settings work well in FSX?

A restrained preset usually suits FSX better than a large stack of effects. ReShade processes the entire frame, including cockpit instruments, menus, labels and text, so aggressive contrast, bloom or sharpening quickly makes the simulator harder to use.

Effect typeRecommended approachMain drawback
Levels, curves or tonemappingUse small adjustments to correct contrast and colourCrushed shadows can hide cockpit detail
SharpeningEnable one sharpening shader at a low settingExcess strength produces halos and shimmering
SMAA or FXAAUse one only if native FSX anti-aliasing is insufficientPost-process AA can soften gauges and text
Bloom or ambient lightKeep subtle and test in daylight and at nightBright skies and illuminated panels can wash out
Depth of field or ambient occlusionLeave disabled until the depth buffer is proven reliableHigh graphics cost and frequent depth or interface artefacts

Do not stack several sharpening or anti-aliasing shaders. Native multisample anti-aliasing handles aircraft edges differently from ReShade’s final-image filters, so ReShade AA is not a direct replacement in every scene.

FSX is often limited by its main CPU thread, but ReShade adds GPU work. If the graphics card is already near its limit, heavy effects can still reduce frame rate sharply; our guide to FSX hardware and performance limits explains where the simulator usually bottlenecks. For changes beyond post-processing, use our broader FSX realism and graphics settings rather than trying to make ReShade correct every visual weakness.

Why is ReShade not working in FSX?

Most FSX ReShade failures come from selecting the wrong executable, choosing the wrong DirectX API or overwriting another add-on’s wrapper DLL.

SymptomLikely cause and fix
No startup banner or overlayConfirm the ReShade files are beside the active fsx.exe. Reinstall using the API that matches the DirectX 10 Preview setting and check whether a ReShade log was created there.
FSX crashes or shows a black screen immediatelyRemove ReShade through its installer and restore any wrapper file that existed beforehand. Then test FSX without ReShade before attempting a clean installation.
The Home key does nothingLook for the startup banner to confirm ReShade loaded. Laptop function-key modes and other overlays can intercept the key, so disable competing overlays one at a time.
Preset changes disappear after closing FSXThe simulator cannot write to the chosen folder. Save the preset in a user-writable location and check that its file is not read-only.
Red shader compilation errors appearThe effect package may be incomplete or incompatible with that ReShade release. Re-run the installer, refresh the installed effects and remove packages you do not use.
Depth effects flicker or affect the wrong areasFSX’s accessible depth buffer can be unreliable, especially with certain anti-aliasing and rendering configurations. Disable depth-dependent effects and retain colour and sharpening filters.

How do I uninstall ReShade from FSX?

The safest removal method is to run the same ReShade installer, select fsx.exe and choose its uninstall option. Test FSX afterwards in the same DirectX mode used during installation.

For manual removal, delete only files confirmed as belonging to ReShade, normally its matching d3d9.dll or dxgi.dll, configuration, log, preset and shader folder. If a wrapper DLL existed before ReShade was installed, restore that backup instead of deleting it; otherwise the older graphics add-on may stop working.
