How do I install and configure the DCS UH-60L mod?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Install the DCS UH-60L Black Hawk mod correctly, bind cyclic, collective, pedals and trim, and fix missing-aircraft or loading problems.

Install the UH-60L Black Hawk mod by extracting its aircraft folder into Saved Games\DCS\Mods\aircraft, not the DCS World programme directory. Start DCS World, select the UH-60L control profile, bind cyclic, collective, pedals and force trim, then add a Player or Client UH-60L slot to a mission.

Where should the UH-60L mod be installed?

The UH-60L is a community aircraft mod, so DCS Module Manager does not install or update it. It belongs in the active DCS folder under Windows Saved Games; this applies to both standalone and Steam installations.

  1. Close DCS World. Do not replace aircraft files while the simulator is running.
  2. Obtain the packaged release. Use the complete release archive supplied by the mod's maintainers rather than a source-code snapshot or an unofficial repack.
  3. Find the active Saved Games folder. Most installations use %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\DCS. An installation retained from the former Open Beta branch may still use %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta. The correct folder is the one whose Logs and Config contents change when DCS runs.
  4. Remove an older UH-60L installation. Delete or move the old mod folder instead of merging releases; obsolete scripts left behind can cause faults that look like update incompatibility.
  5. Extract the archive into the aircraft directory. The resulting path should resemble Saved Games\DCS\Mods\aircraft\<UH-60L folder>\entry.lua. Create the Mods\aircraft folders if they do not exist.
  6. Start DCS and check for the aircraft. Look for UH-60L in the aircraft selector under Options > Controls, or in the Mission Editor's helicopter type list.

A mistake we see constantly is an extra directory level, such as aircraft\UH-60L-release\UH-60L\entry.lua. The folder containing entry.lua must sit directly beneath Mods\aircraft. Our explanation of DCS Saved Games paths and archive structure covers redirected folders and other installation layouts.

Do not place the mod under the protected DCS installation at DCS World\Mods\aircraft. Core-directory installation can lead to authorisation or integrity-check problems and may be disturbed by repair operations.

Which UH-60L controls should I bind?

Bind the UH-60L through its own aircraft profile under Options > Controls; bindings copied from another helicopter may reference commands the Black Hawk does not use.

ControlTypical hardwareConfiguration check
Cyclic pitch and rollJoystick Y and X axesForward stick must move the cockpit cyclic forward; right stick must move it right.
CollectiveThrottle, slider or helicopter collectiveInvert the axis if raising the physical lever lowers the cockpit collective. Enable the DCS slider option for a one-way lever if it gives a more usable response.
Rudder or anti-torquePedals or twist axisCheck that no second controller has also been assigned to yaw.
Power control leversSpare axes, switches or clickable cockpitThese control engine power and are not substitutes for the collective. Axis commands may depend on the mod release.
Force trim and trim controlsStick buttons or hatKeep force-trim release within easy reach; bind directional trim commands if the installed release provides them.
Wheel brakesToe-brake axes or a buttonConfirm left and right brakes release fully when the pedals are untouched.

Open Axis Assign and clear unwanted automatic assignments from every controller column. DCS often assigns pitch, roll, throttle or rudder to several connected devices, causing unexplained control movement.

Begin with full axis saturation, no curve and no dead zone. Add only enough dead zone to stop genuine hardware jitter, then use a mild positive cyclic curve if a short, spring-centred joystick is too sensitive near the centre. Avoid reducing saturation simply to calm the helicopter because that removes control authority at the ends of travel. We cover the hardware-specific choices in our helicopter axis and trim set-up advice.

How should UH-60L force trim be configured?

Choose the trimmer behaviour that matches the physical stick if the installed UH-60L release exposes trimmer modes under its Special options.

  • Spring-centred joystick: use the centre-return or central-position mode where available. After setting trim, return the physical stick to centre so DCS can hand control back without a sudden input.
  • Force-feedback stick: select the force-feedback mode if provided, allowing the hardware's physical centre to move with trim.
  • Unsprung cyclic: use the non-spring option where available; a virtual trim offset designed for a desktop stick can otherwise double the input.

If the cyclic appears frozen immediately after trimming, the central-position mode is usually waiting for the joystick and pedals to pass through centre. If the helicopter lurches every time trim is released, check that the selected mode actually matches the hardware.

How do I make the UH-60L flyable in a mission?

The UH-60L becomes flyable only when the mission contains an appropriate player slot; installing the mod does not add it automatically to every mission.

  1. Open the Mission Editor and create or edit a mission.
  2. Add a helicopter for a country supported by the mod, with the USA normally being the straightforward choice.
  3. Select UH-60L from the aircraft type list.
  4. Set the skill to Player for a single-player aircraft or Client for a multiplayer slot.
  5. Choose a suitable airfield, parking position or airborne start, then save and run the mission.

If the aircraft type is hidden, disable the Mission Editor's historical-unit filter and check the selected country. Included training or instant-action missions vary between releases, so a simple Mission Editor slot is the more reliable installation test.

Why is the UH-60L missing or not loading?

A missing UH-60L almost always points to the wrong Saved Games branch, a double-nested folder or an incompatible old release.

  • No UH-60L control profile or aircraft type: confirm that entry.lua is one folder below Mods\aircraft and that you used the Saved Games folder active for this DCS installation.
  • Aircraft appears but cannot be selected: make sure the mission unit is set to Player or Client rather than an AI skill level.
  • Controls move by themselves: clear duplicate axes across the joystick, throttle, pedals and any connected gamepad. Then confirm that collective and power control levers have not been cross-assigned.
  • Missing cockpit elements or script errors: remove the mod folder and extract a clean, complete release. Overwriting an old version commonly leaves incompatible files behind.
  • DCS hangs or closes during loading: temporarily remove the UH-60L folder and relaunch DCS. If that fixes the problem, inspect Saved Games\DCS\Logs\dcs.log for UH-60L or Lua errors and work through the DCS crash and loading checks.

Does the UH-60L work after DCS updates and in multiplayer?

The UH-60L can work in multiplayer and across DCS updates, but the server, mission and participating clients need compatible copies of the mod.

A DCS update normally leaves Saved Games mods installed, yet changes to scripting, cockpit or flight-model interfaces can still break them. When updating the UH-60L itself, remove the old aircraft folder and install the complete replacement rather than merging files. Aircraft bindings are normally stored separately under Saved Games\DCS\Config\Input, though backing up that folder protects customised profiles.

Before diagnosing a new fault, check whether the DCS build and mod release remain compatible. For multiplayer, the dedicated server also needs the required mod files, and server integrity rules may reject configurations that alter protected DCS files. Shared-cockpit or multicrew behaviour can vary by UH-60L release, so do not infer multicrew support merely because separate Client slots load successfully.
