How do I fix DCS World freezing, crashing, or not loading?
DCS World usually freezes, crashes, or fails to load because an update has exposed an incompatible mod, damaged game files, a corrupted Saved Games profile, exhausted RAM or VRAM, or a graphics-driver or overlay problem. Disable add-ons, repair the correct installation, reset the user profile, then test conservative graphics settings before reinstalling.
What causes DCS World to freeze or crash?
Most DCS World failures fall into a small number of patterns, and the point at which it stops is the best first clue.

A Windows “Not responding” message does not always mean DCS has crashed. The first launch after an update or cache clear may spend longer compiling shaders; if CPU or disk activity continues, allow it to finish before ending the process.
How do I fix DCS World crashes and loading failures?
We recommend working through these checks in order and stopping once DCS can repeatedly load a stock mission.
- Reproduce the fault once. Restart Windows, launch DCS from its normal platform shortcut and note where it fails. Remove old command-line arguments, pinned shortcuts to obsolete executables and unnecessary compatibility settings. A precise trigger—opening the menu, loading a terrain or entering the cockpit—cuts out much of the guesswork.
- Update and repair the correct installation. If Steam and standalone copies are both installed, confirm that the shortcut, updater and repair tool belong to the same copy. Verify the files through Steam, or use the repair option supplied with standalone DCS. A repair restores core files but does not reset the Saved Games profile.
- Remove every third-party mod. Rename the active
Modsfolder under Saved Games and remove any add-ons placed directly in the main DCS directory, then repair again. Export scripts and other additions outsideModscan also cause startup failures, which is why merely disabling one aircraft is not a complete clean test. fxoandmetashaders2inside the active Saved Games DCS folder, if those folders exist. Do not delete similarly named content from the main installation. DCS recreates these caches, so the next mission load may take longer. - Test a fresh Saved Games profile. Rename
%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\DCSto a unique backup name such asDCS.backup, then launch DCS and let it create a clean profile. The active folder may instead have a build-specific name such asDCS.openbetaon an older or migrated installation; use the actual Windows Saved Games location if it has been redirected. This test preserves the original profile and isolates settings, bindings, scripts and cached data in one move. - Reduce memory pressure. Leave the Windows page file enabled and system-managed, preferably on an SSD with ample free space. Close memory-heavy applications, then lower texture quality, terrain textures and preload radius; also test reduced visibility, shadows, antialiasing and VR resolution or pixel density. Compare the computer with the practical DCS PC requirements and hardware bottlenecks before assuming that a reinstall will help.
- Remove driver and stability variables. Temporarily disable recording overlays, monitoring hooks and non-essential peripheral or RGB utilities. Return CPU, GPU and RAM settings to stock, including aggressive memory profiles, and test a stable graphics driver. If the crashes began directly after a driver change, reinstall that driver cleanly or return to the previously stable release.
- Run a controlled stock mission. Start with an included Instant Action or simple local mission, using an unmodified aircraft and terrain. Repeat it before adding settings, scripts or mods back one group at a time. This is more useful than changing several unrelated options between tests.
What if a fresh Saved Games profile fixes DCS?
A successful clean-profile test means the main DCS installation is probably sound and the fault is inside the old Saved Games folder.
Close DCS and restore only what is needed, starting with control bindings from Config\Input. Add personal missions, liveries and scripts separately, launching DCS between each group. Do not copy the entire old Config folder back at once, because that can restore the setting or script that caused the failure.
Why does DCS crash only on one mission, aircraft or server?
A failure limited to one item usually points to that content rather than the whole simulator.
- One user mission or multiplayer server: suspect a broken mission script, missing dependency, server-side mod requirement or version mismatch. If other servers and stock missions work, reinstalling DCS is unlikely to solve it.
- One aircraft on every terrain: remove cockpit, sound and aircraft-specific mods, then repair the module files. Test the aircraft in an included mission before loading community content.
- Every mission on one terrain: repair the terrain files and test lower textures and preload radius. Large terrains and complex missions can expose RAM, page-file or storage limits that a lightweight mission does not.
- Disconnects without the application closing: treat these as network, authorisation, integrity-check or server problems. They are different from a DCS process crash to the desktop.
What should I look for in the DCS log?
The DCS log is most useful when it is captured immediately after the failed launch or crash.
Open %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\DCS\Logs\dcs.log, adjusting the profile folder name where necessary. Copy it before launching again because a later run can replace the useful context. Any crash archive generated beside the log may provide additional detail.
Look for repeated errors near the failure involving a named mod path, missing file, memory allocation, graphics device, driver module or access denial. The final warning is not automatically the cause; shutdown messages often appear after the real fault. If the log ends abruptly, Windows Reliability Monitor may identify the faulting driver or DLL. A DLL inside a mod directory points towards that mod, while a display-driver component points towards the graphics software or hardware stability.
Should I reinstall DCS World?
Reinstall DCS World only after file repair, a mod-free test and a fresh Saved Games profile have failed.
Uninstalling the simulator does not normally remove the Saved Games profile, so a corrupted configuration can survive a full reinstall and produce the same crash. If a repaired or clean installation still crashes in stock missions with a newly created profile, concentrate on the graphics driver, Windows page file, RAM stability, storage health and temperatures rather than repeating the installation.
