Which joysticks work with FS2004 on a modern PC?

FS2004 works with most USB joysticks, yokes and HOTAS units that Windows recognises as a game controller and exposes through DirectInput. USB models from Logitech, Thrustmaster, CH Products and Saitek usually work; old gameport sticks, XInput-only devices and hardware without a compatible Windows driver require extra care or may fail.

What makes a joystick compatible with FS2004?

Compatibility depends mainly on Windows and DirectInput support, not whether the packaging mentions Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. If the controller appears in the Windows Game Controllers panel with working axes and buttons, FS2004 can normally use it.

Install a driver intended for your version and architecture of Windows when the manufacturer requires one. FS2004 is a 32-bit application, but that does not mean a 64-bit Windows installation should use an old 32-bit hardware driver; the driver must match the operating system.

Which controller types work?

Standard USB flight controllers are the safest choice, while legacy ports and specialised console protocols are less predictable.

Common suitable examples include the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, Thrustmaster T.16000M family, CH Products USB sticks and Saitek or Logitech X-series HOTAS units. These are examples rather than a guarantee for every hardware revision: working Windows detection remains the deciding test.

How do I check a joystick before starting FS2004?

Test the controller in Windows first so that driver, USB and calibration faults are not mistaken for an FS2004 problem.

  1. Connect the controller directly. Use a main PC USB port initially rather than an unpowered hub, then allow Windows to finish detecting it.

  3. Start FS2004 after connecting it. FS2004 does not handle hot-plugging reliably, so restart the simulator if the controller was attached afterwards.

  5. Test in a simple aircraft. Confirm full travel, correct direction and stable centring before adding profiles or controller software.

Why is my joystick detected but not working correctly?

Incorrect assignments and duplicate axes cause more FS2004 controller problems than genuine incompatibility.

  • Two devices control the same axis: remove automatic throttle, rudder or aileron assignments from the device that should not control them.
  • The aircraft drifts: recalibrate in Windows, add a small null zone and check for a noisy or worn potentiometer.
  • An axis moves backwards: reverse that axis in the controller assignment rather than recalibrating around the problem.
  • Buttons work but an advanced switch does not: mode selectors, displays, LEDs and some multi-position switches may depend on vendor software rather than native FS2004 input support.
  • A virtual controller appears beside the physical one: avoid assigning both copies. Profiling software can otherwise send duplicate or conflicting inputs.
  • Force feedback is missing: ordinary flight controls may work even when an older controller's force-feedback driver or effects do not.

Should I use an adapter for an old gameport joystick?

A gameport-to-USB adapter is reasonable only for a simple analogue stick when retaining that particular hardware matters. Basic adapters may omit throttle, rudder, extra buttons or force feedback, and proprietary digital gameport controllers may not work at all.
