How do I configure FS2004 keyboard and joystick controls?

How do I assign keys, buttons and axes?

FS2004 handles keyboard and button bindings separately from analogue axis assignments, so configure both parts of the Assignments screen.

  1. Connect the controller before starting FS2004. Open the Windows Game Controllers panel by running joy.cpl, then confirm that every axis and button responds. Calibrate it there if the centre or full travel is wrong.
  2. Open the control assignments. In FS2004, choose Options > Controls > Assignments. Press Alt first if the menu bar is hidden in full-screen mode.
  3. Assign keyboard keys and buttons. Select the required command, choose the assignment-change option and press the key or controller button. Clear any old binding that would make one control trigger two unrelated commands.
  4. Configure analogue axes. Open the joystick-axis part of the assignments screen, select the correct controller and bind each physical axis to its matching FS2004 axis command.
  5. Check direction and duplication. Use the reverse option when an axis moves backwards. Inspect every connected device because FS2004 may assign the same flight-control axis to more than one controller.
  6. Test with a default aircraft. Check the cockpit yoke, pedals and throttle visually before changing an add-on aircraft's own settings.

Which FS2004 joystick axes should I use?

A global throttle axis operates all engines and is the sensible choice for a single lever. Individual engine axes are useful only when the hardware has separate levers. Propeller and mixture axes can be added in the same way when the controller provides them.

What sensitivity and null-zone settings should I use?

Start with high sensitivity and a small null zone, then increase the null zone only enough to stop unwanted movement around the centre.

  • Joystick or yoke: use high sensitivity so the aircraft can receive the full available control range.
  • Rudder pedals or twist grip: add a little null zone if the rudder flickers while untouched.
  • Gamepad sticks: a modest null zone can control centre drift, but too much creates a noticeable dead area.
  • Throttle: keep the null zone low and verify that the cockpit lever reaches both idle and full power.

FS2004 lacks the detailed response curves found in newer simulators. Reducing sensitivity can soften an input, but it can also reduce useful control travel, so recheck full deflection afterwards. Why are my FS2004 controls not working correctly?

Most FS2004 control faults come from a disabled joystick, duplicated axes, poor Windows calibration or an analogue control assigned as a pair of key commands.

  • No joystick input: confirm that Windows detects the device, then check that joystick input is enabled under Options > Controls. Pressing Ctrl+K can toggle joystick input off accidentally.
  • Aircraft drifts or oscillates: recalibrate the controller, add a small null zone and remove duplicate aileron, elevator or rudder assignments from other devices.
  • Control moves backwards: enable the reverse option for that axis rather than swapping it to an unrelated command.
  • Throttle has limited or erratic travel: test its full range in Windows and confirm that it is assigned to Throttle Axis, not spoilers, mixture or throttle key commands.
  • Keyboard command behaves unexpectedly: remove conflicting assignments and check the Num Lock state when using number-pad controls.
  • Only one aircraft has the problem: test the same input in a default FS2004 aircraft. If it works there, the add-on may use its own control logic or configuration utility.

Can I use a keyboard, joystick and gamepad together?

FS2004 can use the keyboard alongside multiple recognised controllers, but each flight-control axis should normally be assigned to only one physical device.

A practical arrangement is to keep pitch and roll on the joystick or yoke, rudder on pedals or a twist grip, and infrequent functions such as lights, views and engine controls on the keyboard. Use gamepad buttons for trim, brakes or view changes, but clear any unwanted axes FS2004 assigns automatically.

The simulator's built-in assignments are broadly global rather than modern per-aircraft profiles. If Windows changes a controller's device order after reconnecting hardware, revisit the assignment screen and verify each device before flight.
