Learn how to access KDFW digital ATIS, read arrival and departure data, and apply runways, approaches, weather and restrictions to your flight plan.
To access KDFW digital ATIS, use the D-ATIS request in a datalink-capable aircraft or connected EFB, or the text ATIS supplied by your simulator or online ATC network. For planning, copy the information code, active arrival and departure runways, approaches, wind, altimeter and restrictions, then update your route and procedures.
Digital ATIS is a text delivery method, not a radio mode. Tuning an ATIS frequency gives you the voice broadcast; receiving D-ATIS text requires a supported datalink, aircraft system, EFB or controller network. In a general flight simulator, the available method therefore depends on the aircraft, add-ons and ATC environment being used.
Where can you access KDFW digital ATIS?
KDFW D-ATIS can be obtained through a supported aircraft datalink or through the text-information service provided by your simulation’s ATC environment.

Use the KDFW airport charts and published ATIS frequencies rather than relying on an old frequency copied from a video or saved flight. A chart showing D-ATIS availability does not mean that every consumer simulator or EFB can retrieve the real-world text feed.
How should KDFW ATIS be applied to a flight plan?
Use KDFW ATIS to refine the airport-specific part of the plan, not to replace the en-route route automatically.
- Choose one operational source. When flying with online ATC, use that network’s ATIS because it reflects the controller’s runway configuration. For an offline flight, use the simulator’s weather and ATC information. A live real-world ATIS will be wrong if the simulator is using preset or historical weather.
- Request the correct message. KDFW may provide separate arrival and departure information. Use departure ATIS before leaving Dallas/Fort Worth and arrival ATIS when planning to land there.
- Record the controlling details. Copy the information letter, issue time, wind, visibility, cloud or ceiling, temperature, dew point, altimeter setting, approaches and runways in use, plus any stated runway or taxi restrictions.

- Update performance and cockpit setup. Use wind, temperature and pressure for take-off or landing calculations, set the altimeter using the correct unit, and review whether visibility or runway conditions affect the planned approach.
- Retrieve it again before the critical phase. Check departure ATIS before clearance or taxi and arrival ATIS before programming the final approach. A new information letter means the message has been revised.
What should you enter in the FMS?
Enter the expected runway and procedure only when the ATIS and your clearance make that expectation reasonable.
At KDFW, several parallel runways may be active at once. An ATIS statement listing approaches or landing runways does not necessarily assign your aircraft a specific runway. Online pilots should keep the plan flexible until ATC assigns one; offline pilots can select the runway most consistent with the simulator’s active flow.
A runway change normally requires edits to the departure or approach, and sometimes its runway transition. It does not automatically require replacing the entire route or STAR. If manual programming is needed, follow the normal process for entering and checking procedures in a GPS or FMS, then inspect the resulting legs for discontinuities, duplicate fixes and an incorrect runway transition.
What KDFW ATIS mistakes cause bad flight plans?
The most common errors come from mixing information sources or treating an advertised runway as a clearance.
- Using live ATIS with non-live simulator weather: obtain ATIS from the same simulator or network that controls the flight.
- Reading arrival ATIS for departure: check the message label before using its runway information.
- Assuming “approaches in use” is a runway assignment: plan a likely approach, but wait for clearance before committing when ATC is active.
- Keeping an old information code: compare both the letter and issue time, especially after a weather or runway change.
- Confusing inches of mercury and hectopascals: verify the instrument’s pressure unit before setting the reported altimeter value.
- Changing the whole route after a runway switch: first determine whether only the runway, approach or procedure transition needs changing.

Does KDFW digital ATIS replace charts or ATC clearance?
No. KDFW digital ATIS supplies weather and airport operating information, but it does not replace charts, complete operational notices or an ATC clearance.
Use it to anticipate the runway configuration and prepare a compatible procedure. The controller’s clearance remains authoritative in controlled online flying, and any later runway assignment must be checked against the chart and the programmed flight plan before it is accepted or activated.
