Learn how to fly KDFW on VATSIM: charts, SIDs, STARs, ATC calls, taxi technique, runway changes and fixes for common navdata errors.
To fly into or out of KDFW on VATSIM in Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Prepar3D or FSX, use current charts, file a realistic IFR route, load—but do not assume—the likely runway and procedure, and follow ATC’s clearance. Expect runway-dependent procedures, long taxis, frequency hand-offs and last-minute runway changes.
Prepare before connecting at KDFW
Prepare the route, charts, avionics and parking position before connecting at Dallas/Fort Worth. KDFW has seven runways around a large central terminal complex, so guessing a taxi route or programming the aircraft while moving causes trouble quickly.
- Open the airport diagram and procedures. Keep the relevant KDFW airport diagram, SIDs, STARs and approach charts available outside the simulator. Mark your stand, nearby ramp exit and likely runway crossings.

- File a route your aircraft can fly. Select the correct equipment and navigation capabilities. Do not file an RNAV procedure if the aircraft cannot follow its lateral, altitude and speed constraints.
- Check the navigation-data cycle. The procedure in the FMS must match the chart closely enough to contain the assigned fixes and transitions. If it does not, tell ATC that you are unable and request another procedure or radar vectors.
- Connect only at a parking position. Start at a suitable gate or ramp with the aircraft stationary, never on a taxiway or runway. Set the transponder and radio state according to your pilot client and controller instructions.
Which KDFW runway, SID and STAR should you use?
Use the ATIS and ATC clearance, not wind alone, to determine the runway and procedure. Dallas/Fort Worth normally operates its parallel runways as a coordinated system, and traffic flow, arrival direction, departure route and parking location can outweigh the runway closest to your gate.

How do you depart KDFW on VATSIM?
A safe KDFW departure follows a deliberate clearance, programming and taxi sequence.
- Obtain the ATIS. Record the information letter, runway configuration, weather and any special taxi or departure instructions. Use the ATIS source available through the radio, controller information or your VATSIM client.
- Request and copy the IFR clearance. Write down the clearance limit, route, initial or top altitude, departure frequency and squawk code. Read back amendments and anything that differs from the flight plan.
- Programme the cleared route. Confirm the SID revision, runway branch, transition, first en-route fix and altitude constraints. Remove genuine discontinuities, but do not join fixes that the chart does not connect.
- Brief climb-via instructions. If cleared to climb via the SID, comply with its published lateral path, altitude restrictions and speeds up to the cleared top altitude. An instruction such as “climb via except maintain” changes the upper limit; it does not erase lower restrictions below that altitude.
- Push and start correctly. Follow any online ramp controller or ATIS instructions. Where the apron is uncontrolled, coordinate visually and on the appropriate frequency before pushing, then call Ground at the ramp exit or location specified locally.
- Copy the entire taxi route. Read back the assigned runway and every hold-short instruction. A taxi clearance to a runway does not authorise crossing another runway; wait for an explicit crossing clearance. If lost, stop clear of runways and ask for progressive taxi.
- Wait for an actual take-off clearance. “Line up and wait” is not permission to depart. If told to monitor Tower, change frequency and listen without making an initial call.
- Make a concise departure check-in. Report your callsign, altitude leaving and cleared climb. If ATC assigns a heading instead of the SID path, fly the heading rather than engaging LNAV out of habit.
How do you arrive at KDFW on VATSIM?
A successful KDFW arrival starts before descent, with the expected runway and STAR already briefed but not treated as final.
- Collect the arrival ATIS before top of descent. Note the information letter, landing runways, approach type and significant instructions. Compare the expected approach with your aircraft’s equipment and your own ability.
- Check the STAR carefully. Confirm its transition, runway branch, altitude windows and speed limits. Being cleared direct to a fix on the STAR does not itself authorise descent; wait for a descent clearance or an explicit descend-via instruction.
- Manage descend-via clearances. Set the correct cleared lower altitude and monitor the aircraft rather than assuming VNAV will comply. A plain “descend and maintain” replaces intervening published altitude restrictions unless ATC reissues them, while published speed restrictions remain unless cancelled or amended.
- Report the ATIS on initial contact. Include your actual altitude and whether you are descending via the arrival. Expect Approach to assign a runway based on the active traffic plan rather than the shortest taxi to your gate.
- Handle runway changes without guessing. Confirm the new runway, approach and any revised altitude or heading. If the FMS cannot be changed safely in time, say unable and request vectors or extra track miles.
- Brief the final approach. Tune and identify the approach aid where applicable, set minima and check the missed approach. Parallel traffic is normal at KDFW, so do not overshoot the final approach course. Accept a visual approach only when you have the required visual reference.
- Vacate and hold where instructed. Clear the runway fully, but do not cross an adjacent parallel runway without clearance. Contact or monitor Ground exactly as Tower instructs, then give your terminal, gate or parking area so the controller can choose a sensible taxi route.
What should you say to KDFW ATC?
KDFW radio calls should contain the information the controller needs and nothing extra. Frequencies and sector names can be split during busy events, so use the controller label and instructions displayed in your VATSIM client.

Use your actual callsign, location, altitude and procedure. Read back runway assignments, hold-short and crossing instructions, headings, altitudes, approach clearances and squawk codes. Avoid “with you”; the altitude report is more useful.
Common KDFW VATSIM mistakes and fixes
The most damaging KDFW errors involve procedure mismatches, runway crossings and trying to reprogramme while the aircraft is moving.

What happens when KDFW ATC is offline?
When no KDFW controller is online, use the network advisory frequency or other frequency specified by the client and local network guidance, make concise position reports and separate yourself from other traffic. A filed IFR flight plan is not an ATC clearance when nobody is providing control service.
A Fort Worth Center controller may provide top-down service when KDFW Approach, Tower or Ground is closed, subject to workload and local policy. Read the controller information and contact the position whose listed coverage includes KDFW; do not assume that every online controller owns the airport.
Can you fly VFR at KDFW on VATSIM?
You can fly VFR at KDFW, but it is a Class B airport and demands accurate radio work. When ATC is online, obtain VFR departure instructions before using the runway, and do not enter the Class B on arrival or in transit until the controller explicitly clears you into it. During heavy traffic, IFR is usually the more predictable choice.
