Compare built-in, freeware and payware KJFK scenery for X-Plane 11, with product options, installation steps and common conflict fixes.
For X-Plane 11, KJFK is available in three practical forms: the built-in Global Airports version, community freeware custom airports, and commercial scenery. Established payware choices include Nimbus KJFK and Drzewiecki Design’s New York Airports package, which includes JFK with other New York fields. Install only one airport-level KJFK package at a time.
Which X-Plane 11 KJFK scenery should I choose?
The right choice depends on whether you prioritise cost, detail, performance or coverage beyond John F. Kennedy International Airport.
| Option | What it provides | Best choice when | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in Global Airports KJFK | A functional airport layout using X-Plane’s standard scenery assets | You want dependable performance with no installation work | Terminals and ground detail are less distinctive than dedicated scenery |
| Freeware custom KJFK | Community-made terminals, aprons, signs, lighting and sometimes local imagery | You want more detail without buying a commercial package | Quality, layout age and required object libraries vary between releases |
| Nimbus KJFK for X-Plane 11 | A dedicated commercial recreation of JFK with detailed airport buildings and ground areas | KJFK itself is your priority | Confirm that the specific edition supports X-Plane 11 and expect a higher system load |
| Drzewiecki Design New York Airports XP | KJFK alongside additional airports in the New York area | You regularly fly between several New York fields | It can overlap with separate JFK or New York scenery packages |
Freeware packages appear under several titles, so search for both KJFK and John F. Kennedy in our X-Plane aircraft and scenery library. An airport texture pack or object library may improve the assets used at JFK, but it does not replace the airport layout itself.
What should I check before downloading KJFK scenery?
Check simulator support, dependencies and airport coverage before installing any KJFK package.
- X-Plane version: choose an edition that explicitly names X-Plane 11. A similarly named X-Plane 12 release should not be assumed compatible.
- Airport layout: older freeware may depict former taxiway markings, terminal work or gates that no longer match the layout represented by your charts.
- Required libraries: freeware commonly uses separate object libraries. Missing libraries can remove buildings or stop the package loading entirely.
- Plugin features: animated jetways, marshallers and ground traffic may require an additional plugin. The static airport can load even when those features do not.
- Performance: detailed terminals, parked aircraft and high-resolution ground textures can be demanding around New York. Choose the built-in airport or a lighter freeware package if frame rate is already marginal.
How do I install KJFK scenery in X-Plane 11?
Manual X-Plane 11 scenery belongs in the simulator’s Custom Scenery folder and must sit above Global Airports in the scenery order.
- Extract the download. Do not leave the scenery inside its ZIP archive.
- Check the folder level. Open the extracted folder and confirm that it contains the package’s actual scenery files or folders such as
Earth nav data. A duplicated outer folder is a common reason scenery does not appear. - Move the package. Place its top-level folder inside
X-Plane 11/Custom Scenery/. Install any required libraries separately in the same location. - Start and close X-Plane. This allows the simulator to add newly discovered packages to
scenery_packs.ini. - Check scenery priority. Open
Custom Scenery/scenery_packs.iniand keep the custom KJFK airport above Global Airports. Orthophoto and mesh base layers belong below airport scenery. - Test one package first. Load at KJFK before adding New York city scenery, orthophotos or traffic plugins. This makes conflicts much easier to identify.
Do not delete Global Airports. A correctly ordered custom KJFK package overrides the default airport locally while Global Airports continues to provide airports elsewhere.
Why is the new KJFK scenery not showing?
Incorrect folder nesting, scenery priority and missing libraries cause most failed KJFK installations.
- The default airport still appears: move the custom KJFK entry above Global Airports in
scenery_packs.iniand check that it is not markedSCENERY_PACK_DISABLED. - Buildings are missing: raise X-Plane 11’s world-object setting and inspect
Log.txtfor missing library resources. - X-Plane reports that scenery could not be loaded: read the corresponding lines in
Log.txt. They normally identify the absent file, library or unsupported component. - Two terminals or sets of jetways appear: more than one package is drawing KJFK. Disable every other airport-level JFK package rather than trying to stack them.
- The airport floats or cuts into the terrain: an incompatible mesh or orthophoto package is taking priority. Restore the documented order and use any supplied mesh component exactly as instructed by its author.
- Only animated features are absent: verify the required plugin separately. Reinstalling the airport will not fix a missing or blocked jetway or ground-traffic plugin.
Can KJFK scenery be combined with New York city scenery?
Yes, provided the dedicated airport package has priority and the city scenery does not include a competing version of KJFK.
Keep the KJFK airport above Global Airports and any orthophoto base layer. For commercial New York packages with several components, retain the supplied ordering because exclusions and mesh files may be designed to work together. If duplicate buildings appear, disable the package that contributes the unwanted airport objects.
Will X-Plane 11 KJFK scenery work in X-Plane 12?
Not automatically: simple scenery may load, but older airports can have lighting, surface, vegetation, water, plugin or terrain problems in X-Plane 12.
Use an officially supported X-Plane 12 build where one exists rather than copying the XP11 package blindly. Our guide to X-Plane 11 add-on compatibility with X-Plane 12 explains what normally transfers and which components require replacement.
