What KLAX scenery add-ons are available for X-Plane 11?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Compare KLAX scenery add-ons for X-Plane 11, including freeware, payware and California photoreal terrain, plus installation and layering fixes.

X-Plane 11 users have four practical KLAX scenery choices: the included Gateway airport, the legacy freeware MisterX6 rendition, the commercial ShortFinal Design KLAX HD package, and regional orthophoto scenery for Los Angeles. Airport packages replace KLAX itself; orthophotos improve the terrain beneath and around it, so the two types can be combined.

Which KLAX scenery options work in X-Plane 11?

The main choices range from the airport included with X-Plane 11 to a detailed commercial replacement.

Scenery optionWhat it changesMain caveat
Default Gateway KLAXProvides the runways, taxiways, stands and generic airport buildings included with X-Plane 11.No installation is required, but detail and layout depend on the Global Airports data supplied with the simulator.
MisterX6 freeware KLAXAdds a custom airport with more recognisable terminals, objects and ground detail than the default rendition. This is an older freeware release. Check that the archive states X-Plane 11 support and install every library named in its documentation.
ShortFinal Design KLAX HDProvides a dedicated commercial rendition of Los Angeles International with custom airport structures and detailed ground work.Use the X-Plane 11 edition. Do not assume that a package labelled for X-Plane 12 is backward-compatible.
California photoreal sceneryReplaces generic regional terrain with aerial imagery around Los Angeles and the approaches to KLAX.It does not replace terminals, taxiways or airport objects. Our California photoreal terrain package for X-Plane 11 should sit below the airport scenery.

The two custom KLAX airports are alternatives, not complementary layers. Installing both can produce duplicated terminals, overlapping ground markings and conflicting exclusion zones.

Which KLAX add-on should I choose?

Choose one airport package according to the detail, storage and complexity you want, then add orthophoto scenery only if improved surroundings matter to you.

  • Use default KLAX for the simplest setup, lower storage use and fewer dependency problems.
  • Use the MisterX6 rendition when you want a free custom airport and are comfortable installing its required object libraries.
  • Use ShortFinal Design KLAX HD when airport-specific buildings and detailed ground treatment are the priority.
  • Add California orthophotos for more recognisable terrain on arrivals, departures and VFR flights around the Los Angeles basin. An airport's own ground polygons may still cover parts of the imagery.

How do I install KLAX scenery in X-Plane 11?

Install a custom KLAX airport in Custom Scenery, satisfy its library requirements and place it above Global Airports and any orthophoto or base-mesh packages.

  1. Confirm the simulator version. The package documentation should explicitly mention X-Plane 11. A folder name containing only “X-Plane” is not proof of compatibility.
  2. Extract the complete package. Copy its scenery folder into X-Plane 11/Custom Scenery. Open that folder and check that files such as Earth nav data are not buried inside a second, identically named folder.
  3. Install the stated dependencies. Missing libraries cause blank terminals and red scenery-loading warnings. If the documentation names OpenSceneryX, follow our OpenSceneryX installation instructions; it does not substitute for a separately required MisterX Library.
  4. Set the scenery priority. After X-Plane creates or updates scenery_packs.ini, put the custom KLAX airport above Global Airports. Orthophoto and base-mesh entries belong lower down. Our explanation of X-Plane scenery layering covers the correct order.
  5. Disable competing KLAX packages. Keep only one custom airport active. A conflicting entry can be marked SCENERY_PACK_DISABLED in scenery_packs.ini rather than deleting it.

Why is my KLAX scenery missing or broken?

KLAX scenery usually fails because of a nested installation folder, missing object library, competing airport package or incorrect scenery order.

  • The default airport still appears: check that the package is directly inside Custom Scenery and listed above Global Airports.
  • Buildings or jetways are missing: open Log.txt after closing X-Plane and look for the named missing library or asset.
  • Terminals and markings are duplicated: disable the second custom KLAX package rather than trying to reorder both.
  • Terrain is distorted or unexpectedly flat: another base mesh may be winning the tile. Only the highest-priority base mesh for that area is loaded.
  • Runways do not align with aerial imagery: the airport layout and photograph may represent different dates. Changing scenery order will not correct imagery captured before a runway or taxiway alteration.

Can FSX, Prepar3D or X-Plane 12 KLAX scenery be used?

FSX and Prepar3D KLAX packages cannot be copied directly into X-Plane 11 because their scenery formats, objects and placement data are different. Our compatibility explanation covers why FSX and Prepar3D scenery needs conversion for X-Plane.

X-Plane 12 scenery is not reliably backward-compatible either. It may reference newer library assets or airport features unavailable in X-Plane 11, so use a documented X-Plane 11 release rather than merely changing the package folder or configuration files.
