How do you plan a KMCO to KMIA flight route in a simulator?

To plan a KMCO to KMIA flight route in MSFS, FSX, X-Plane or Prepar3D, use a direct track for a simple GPS flight, or build an IFR route from the active KMCO runway through compatible departure, en-route and arrival procedures. The direct airport-to-airport distance is about 170 NM.

This is a short Florida sector from Orlando International Airport to Miami International Airport. There is no single permanent realistic IFR route: runway configuration, weather, ATC flow, aircraft equipment and the simulator's navigation-data cycle all affect the procedures and fixes you should use.

What route should you use from KMCO to KMIA?

The right route depends on whether you want a straightforward simulator flight, an ATC-managed IFR flight or full airline-style procedure programming.

  • Simple GPS route: enter KMCO DCT KMIA. This is ideal for learning the aircraft, although it is not a promise that real-world ATC would clear the same route.

  • Airline-style IFR route: use the active KMCO runway, a compatible SID and transition, current southbound en-route fixes, then a KMIA STAR and approach. Obtain all procedures from one matching navigation-data cycle.

A realistic route format is therefore KMCO [SID/transition] [en-route fixes] [STAR/transition] KMIA. Avoid copying a named SID or STAR from an old flight plan without checking runway compatibility and whether your FMS still contains it.

How do you build the KMCO–KMIA plan step by step?

  1. Select the aircraft first. A Cessna, turboprop and airliner need different altitudes, fuel assumptions and route complexity. Do not build an RNAV procedure that the chosen avionics cannot fly.
  2. Check weather at both airports. Use the wind, visibility and expected approach to choose the departure and arrival runways. If the weather may change during the flight, leave yourself a sensible alternative rather than forcing the shortest approach.
  3. Choose VFR or IFR. For a casual flight, use KMCO DCT KMIA. For IFR, generate or construct a route from the active runway and inspect every leg instead of accepting the planner's first result blindly.
  4. Add procedures in the correct order. Select the KMCO runway and departure, choose its correct transition, add the en-route section, then select the KMIA arrival and approach. A procedure that initially points away from Miami may still be correct for traffic flow, but large loops or repeated fixes usually indicate a bad transition.
  5. Set a practical cruise altitude. This sector is too short to justify climbing as high as the aircraft can go. Choose an altitude that allows a useful cruise segment without forcing an immediate descent.
  6. Load and inspect the route. Compare the cockpit flight plan with the planner's map. Look for route discontinuities, duplicated fixes, sharp reversals and an approach connected to the wrong runway.
  7. Calculate fuel and descent. Include taxi, trip fuel, reserve and alternate fuel where appropriate. For jets, the rough three-to-one descent rule means descending about 3 NM for each 1,000 feet lost, with extra distance for slowing down; from a higher cruise level, descent may begin soon after reaching cruise.

Default simulator ATC does not always follow a manually programmed SID or STAR. Decide before departure whether the simulator's ATC clearance or your own FMS route takes priority, then amend the other plan to match.

What altitude and flight time should you plan?

Direct distance is approximately 168–170 NM, but procedures and vectors make the flown distance longer. These figures are practical starting points rather than ATC clearances.

The approximate south-south-easterly course normally falls within the US 0–179-degree magnetic-course band. For VFR cruising above 3,000 feet AGL, that generally means an odd-thousand altitude plus 500 feet, such as 5,500 or 7,500 feet. IFR pilots fly the altitude assigned by ATC; routing and local restrictions can change what is available.

Do not use distance alone to estimate time. Add climb, descent, vectors and approach time, especially in a piston aircraft. For fuel, use the selected aircraft's actual simulator performance rather than a generic quantity.

Why does the GPS or autopilot ignore the route?

The usual cause is an incorrect navigation source, inactive leg or broken procedure rather than a faulty flight plan.

  • Set the CDI or navigation source to GPS/FMS rather than VOR/LOC before asking NAV mode to follow the magenta line.
  • Activate the first sensible route leg and use heading mode to establish an intercept if the aircraft is too far from the programmed course.
  • Resolve any DISCONTINUITY between the en-route section, STAR and approach, but do not delete vectors or manual legs without understanding their purpose.
  • Check for duplicated fixes after changing the runway, arrival or approach. Some avionics retain part of the old procedure and create a loop.
  • Use matching navigation data in the route planner and aircraft. A missing waypoint or procedure usually indicates different database cycles.
