Fix a Meta Quest or Oculus virtual keyboard that will not appear, including focus, tracking, Link/Air Link, app compatibility and restart checks.
The Meta Quest virtual keyboard normally appears only after you select an editable text field. If it does not, the usual causes are an unfocused field, a panel positioned outside your view, lost controller or hand tracking, a stalled Quest interface, a connected physical keyboard, or using the Quest keyboard inside a PCVR application.
For general Oculus or Meta Quest use, first determine which environment owns the text field. The Quest system, a standalone app and a Windows PC reached through Quest Link can each use a different keyboard.
Where should the Meta Quest keyboard appear?
The system keyboard should open in supported Quest menus and apps, but it is not a universal keyboard for every VR or Windows application.

How do I bring the Quest virtual keyboard back?
Test a known Quest system text box, then work from input focus through to a full headset restart.
- Test outside the affected app. Leave Quest Link and open the address or search field in Quest Browser. If the keyboard appears there, the headset keyboard works and the fault is confined to the original app or PCVR environment.
- Select the actual text field. Aim at the editable area and press the Touch controller trigger, or pinch it with hand tracking. A button, field label or read-only value can look selectable without accepting keyboard input.
- Reposition and re-centre the display. Move the app panel higher and use the Quest re-centre control. After changing between seated and standing play, the keyboard can open below the visible panel or near an old boundary origin.
- Restore a reliable input method. Wake the Touch controllers, check their batteries and try the field with a controller if hand tracking is missing pinches. If a Bluetooth keyboard is connected, disconnect it temporarily; some app contexts suppress the software keyboard when they detect hardware input.
- Quit and reopen the affected app. Close it from the Quest interface rather than merely minimising it. For a system panel, close the panel and open a fresh one.
- Restart the headset fully. Choose Restart from the power menu. Briefly pressing the power button only puts the headset into standby and does not reload a stalled system interface.
- Install pending headset and app updates. Check the software update area in Settings and update the affected standalone app. Menu wording can differ between Quest software releases.
Why is the keyboard missing only in Quest Link or Air Link?
Quest Link and Air Link place you in a PCVR interface, so the standalone Quest keyboard does not automatically send text to every Windows field.
Click the Windows text field first, then use the keyboard control in the Link desktop interface if one is offered. Otherwise, open Windows' on-screen keyboard or use a physical keyboard connected to the PC. What if the keyboard fails in only one Quest app?
A one-app failure usually belongs to that app rather than the Quest operating system.
- Exit immersive or full-screen mode and try the field on the app's normal two-dimensional panel.
- Look for an app-specific keyboard button; some titles do not summon the Quest keyboard automatically.
- Update the app, then reinstall it only after checking whether its saves and settings are backed up.
- Expect compatibility problems with sideloaded mobile Android apps. An app built for a phone may request an Android input method that Quest does not expose in the same way.
Can a physical keyboard replace the missing virtual keyboard?
A physical keyboard is often the better choice, but it must be connected to the device running the application.
- For a standalone Quest app, pair a supported Bluetooth keyboard with the headset.
- For Quest Link, Air Link or a PC flight simulator, connect the keyboard to the PC.
- A keyboard can type even when Quest does not show a tracked virtual model of it; keyboard tracking and ordinary key input are separate features.
When is a factory reset justified?
Factory-reset the headset only if the keyboard fails in every known system text field after a full restart and software update, especially when other Quest panels are also malfunctioning.
First return any experimental input or keyboard options you changed to their defaults. A factory reset can remove local data and sideloaded content, so confirm that important supported data is backed up.
