Which simulator has better VR performance?

Neither simulator consistently runs better in VR because they stress different parts of the PC and their workloads change from one flight to the next.

Microsoft Flight Simulator can become CPU-limited at a large airport with dense traffic, detailed scenery and complex glass cockpits. High headset resolution, clouds, render scaling and terrain detail can then push the GPU hard. DCS World may run smoothly in a simple training mission but struggle once AI units, scripts, radar calculations and multiplayer activity accumulate. Judge both simulators by frame-time consistency, not a desktop frame-rate comparison. A stable native or motion-reprojected presentation is more comfortable than a higher average that continually misses its target. Reprojection can produce artefacts around propellers, rotor blades, HUD symbols and moving cockpit edges, so it is not a free performance upgrade.

Which has clearer VR cockpits?

Cockpit clarity depends more on headset resolution, lens quality and render scaling than on the simulator itself.

DCS places unusual pressure on clarity because small labels, multifunction displays, HUD symbols and distant aircraft can all matter during combat. Microsoft Flight Simulator presents the same problem in another form: glass-panel text, airliner displays and small controls need to remain legible without leaning forward constantly.

Do not increase every graphics setting to improve readability. Reserve GPU capacity for headset resolution or in-simulator render scale, then reduce expensive peripheral detail such as shadows, clouds, traffic or visibility settings. Upscaling can recover performance where supported, but its temporal processing may soften moving text or leave trails on display symbology; compare it directly with native temporal anti-aliasing.

Do you need a HOTAS for MSFS or DCS in VR?

A physical joystick or yoke is strongly recommended for both, while a HOTAS is close to essential for comfortable DCS combat.

DCS pilots must operate sensors, weapons, trim, communications and countermeasures without seeing the keyboard. Bind the controls needed during high-workload phases, including VR recentering and any view or zoom function you rely on. Detailed cockpit switches can then be handled with the mouse, a pointing device or supported VR controllers.

Microsoft Flight Simulator is less demanding for a basic sightseeing flight, but a joystick or yoke, throttle and rudder control still provide better precision. Airliners introduce their own problem: entering data into an FMC or manipulating a glass cockpit with VR controllers can be slower than using the mouse.

A mistake we see constantly is mapping every available command before the first flight. Start with controls that must be found by touch: trim, brakes, flaps, landing gear, view recentering, push-to-talk or communications, and the aircraft-specific functions required during take-off and landing.

What common VR setup mistakes affect both simulators?

  • Stacking resolution scaling: headset software and simulator render scaling multiply together. Raising both can create an unexpectedly large pixel load.
  • Using the wrong OpenXR runtime: an incorrect active runtime can prevent VR from launching correctly or add an unnecessary software layer.
  • Starting with maximum presets: settings intended for monitor use rarely leave enough headroom for a high-resolution stereo view.
  • Testing only an empty scenario: a quiet runway does not represent a busy MSFS airport or a complex DCS combat mission.
  • Ignoring cockpit workload: attractive scenery does not compensate for controls that cannot be found while wearing the headset.
  • Assuming every aircraft has equal fidelity: aircraft systems and VR interaction vary considerably in both simulators.

Can you use MSFS or DCS VR on a console?

DCS World is a PC simulator, while console VR availability for Microsoft Flight Simulator depends on the specific release and platform.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 remains limited to PC and Xbox and was never released for PlayStation; Xbox does not provide an MSFS VR mode. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PS5 Pro. PSVR2 support is due through a free MSFS 2024 update in 2026, so confirm that the required update is installed before treating the PlayStation version as VR-ready.

Which should you choose for VR flying?
