Learn how to open jetways in FSX with Ctrl+J, park at the gate correctly, enable animations, and fix a jetway that will not move.
In FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, park at a gate fitted with a stock animated jetway, align the left forward passenger door with it, stop the aircraft and press Ctrl+J. The jetway will extend; press Ctrl+J again to retract it before pushback.
How do I operate the default FSX jetway?
The stock FSX jetway is an attach-or-detach animation rather than something you steer manually.
- Choose a suitable gate. Use a parking stand with an articulated jetway. Not every airport or gate has one, and some jetways are static scenery objects.
- Park accurately. Stop at the stand's intended parking point with the forward left passenger door within reach. Set the parking brake; shut down the engines if you are performing a normal turnaround.
- Open the passenger door if required. The default main-exit command is
Shift+E, but opening the door does not move the jetway. - Extend the jetway. Press
Ctrl+Jonce and allow the animation to finish. Pressing it repeatedly can reverse or interrupt the movement. - Retract before departure. Press
Ctrl+Jagain, wait until the jetway is clear, close the door and then begin pushback.
Our detailed gate-arrival and pushback sequence covers aircraft positioning, doors and departure order together. The default shortcut is also listed on our downloadable FSX command chart.
Why does Ctrl+J not move the jetway?
Ctrl+J fails when the object is not a stock animated jetway, the aircraft is outside its reach, animations are disabled or the keyboard assignment has changed.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No jetway is visible | The stand has no jetway, the model is excluded by the scenery settings or add-on scenery has replaced it | Try another gate at a large default airport and raise Scenery Complexity. |
| The jetway is visible but completely still | Advanced animations are disabled, the object is static or it belongs to another jetway system | Enable Advanced Animations in the display settings, then identify which jetway system the scenery uses. |
| Ctrl+J produces no response anywhere | The command is unassigned or another control has taken the shortcut | Open the Controls settings, find Jetway (attach/detach) and restore or replace its assignment. Our guide to checking and changing FSX keyboard controls explains the process. |
| The jetway moves but misses the door | The aircraft is parked badly or its door position is defined incorrectly | Reposition at the gate and try again. If only one add-on aircraft is affected, its exit coordinates are the likely cause. |
| Default airports work but add-on scenery does not | The add-on uses GSX, SODE or a scenery-specific control method | Use the menu or panel supplied with that system rather than assuming Ctrl+J applies. Our stock-versus-GSX jetway troubleshooting explains the distinction. |
A mistake we see often is increasing Airport Vehicle Density to fix a jetway. That slider controls ground traffic, not whether a stock jetway can attach.
Do I need to open the aircraft door first?
No—the stock jetway animation and the aircraft door are separate commands in FSX.
Use Shift+E for the main exit. Aircraft with several exits may require a number pressed immediately after the exit command, while complex add-on aircraft may control doors from a cockpit panel. For a convincing turnaround, open the correct door before extending the jetway even though the stock animation does not always require it.
Can every FSX aircraft use every jetway?
No; the jetway must be able to reach the aircraft's configured passenger-door position.
FSX reads exit-location data from the aircraft configuration, usually in its [exits] section. A poorly configured add-on may make the jetway connect too high, too low or beside the fuselage. Large aircraft can also exceed the reach of some stock jetways, while small aircraft may have no suitable passenger exit.
If the jetway works with a default airliner but not an add-on aircraft at the same stand, try another gate before editing any files. If the failure follows the aircraft everywhere, its exit definition is more likely to be wrong than the airport or keyboard command.
