In real-world aviation, a pilot kneeboard is a small board, pouch or tablet mount strapped to the thigh to keep charts, checklists, clearances and notes visible in the cockpit. Use it by loading only flight-critical material, securing it clear of the controls, and arranging information in the order you will need it.
A kneeboard reduces head-down searching and stops loose paperwork moving around the cockpit. It is a working surface and organiser, however, not a substitute for required aircraft documents, an approved checklist or current navigation information.
Which type of pilot kneeboard should you choose?
Choose the simplest kneeboard that holds the material you genuinely use without obstructing the controls or instruments.

A basic clipboard is often enough for training circuits and familiar local routes. Folding models suit flights involving several charts or procedure plates, while a tablet mount makes sense when electronic flight bag software is an accepted part of the operation.
What should go on a pilot kneeboard?
A useful kneeboard contains the information needed during the next phase of flight, not every document carried in the aircraft.
- A navigation log or concise route summary.
- Departure, destination and alternate frequencies.
- Runway, taxi and approach information.
- The correct aircraft checklist or immediate reference to it.
- Performance figures calculated for that flight.
- A blank page for ATIS, clearances and amended instructions.
- A pen or pencil secured with a short, non-snagging retainer.
Set up a repeatable note format. For an IFR clearance, pilots commonly use C-R-A-F-T: clearance limit, route, altitude, frequency and transponder code. For ATIS, leave labelled spaces for the information identifier, wind, visibility, cloud, altimeter setting or QNH, runway and significant remarks.

How do you set up and use a kneeboard safely?
Set up the kneeboard before engine start, test it through the full control range and avoid reorganising it during a high-workload phase.
- Select the material. Remove expired charts, old weather notes and pages unrelated to the flight. Too much paper makes the required item harder to find.
- Arrange it in flight order. Put start and taxi information first, followed by departure, en-route, arrival and alternate material. Place the first blank note page on top.
- Fit the strap. Position the board on the middle of the thigh and tighten it enough that it cannot rotate, without restricting circulation or leg movement.
- Check control clearance. Move the yoke or stick through its full range and check access to the throttle, trim, flap controls, seat-belt release and emergency exits. Repeat the check after opening any folding panels.
- Prepare the active page. Fold charts and select electronic pages on the ground. Mark expected frequencies and runway details, but be ready to amend them.
- Use short entries. Record clearances, times, fuel changes and frequencies in a consistent format, then read back instructions from the written entry rather than memory.
- Turn pages at low workload. Organise the next phase during cruise or another stable period. During take-off, approach or an abnormal situation, flying the aircraft takes priority over writing.
Which leg should a pilot kneeboard go on?
Use the thigh that allows comfortable writing without interfering with the primary flight controls, throttle quadrant or cockpit sidewall.
Right-handed pilots in conventional yoke-equipped trainers often use the right thigh because they fly with the left hand and write with the right. That is not a rule: a centre stick, side-stick, left-seat throttle arrangement or narrow cockpit may make the opposite leg safer. Sit in the aircraft and test the complete control range rather than deciding by handedness alone.
Can a tablet replace a paper kneeboard?
A tablet can replace much of the paper on a kneeboard only when its use complies with the applicable aviation authority, aircraft operator and type of operation.
Before departure, download the required data for offline use, confirm chart validity, charge the device, set a readable brightness and disable distracting notifications. Locking screen orientation prevents an unwanted rotation during turbulence. Keep charging cables away from flight controls and avoid leaving the tablet in direct sunlight, where heat may force it to shut down.
Plan for failure. The backup might be a second approved device, essential paper charts or enough written information to complete or terminate the flight safely. What kneeboard mistakes cause problems?
Most kneeboard problems come from overloading it, fitting it too loosely or allowing it to compete with flying the aircraft.
- Loose papers: clip every active sheet and stow pages that are no longer required.
- An unsecured pen: carry a spare and use a short retainer that cannot wrap around a control.
- Blocked controls: test the kneeboard with folding panels open as well as closed.
- Outdated information: check chart dates and remove old frequencies or procedure pages before loading new ones.
- Excessive head-down time: use abbreviations and prepared boxes instead of writing full sentences.
- Tablet dependence: prepare a practical backup for battery exhaustion, overheating, glare or an application crash.
How do kneeboards work in flight simulators?
In a flight simulator, a kneeboard usually means an on-screen cockpit reference containing maps, checklists, aircraft notes or mission pages rather than a board strapped to the player's leg.
