Garmin Pilot is a subscription electronic flight bag app for iOS and Android. Pilots use it to check weather and NOTAMs, view charts, build and file flight plans, calculate selected performance data, and monitor position in flight. It supplements, rather than replaces, approved aircraft instruments and proper pre-flight planning.

What does Garmin Pilot actually do?
Garmin Pilot brings the main planning, briefing and in-flight reference tasks into one mobile application.

How do you plan a flight in Garmin Pilot?
A reliable Garmin Pilot flight plan starts with current data, an accurate aircraft profile and a route checked against charts, weather and operational restrictions.
- Download the required data. Update the app's aviation data and save charts for the departure, destination, alternates and the area between them. Do this over a dependable connection before leaving.
- Create or verify the aircraft profile. Enter the correct aircraft, fuel capacity, cruise figures, units and weight-and-balance information. Treat figures copied from a generic profile as provisional until checked against the aircraft flight manual or pilot's operating handbook.
- Build the route. Enter the departure and destination, then add waypoints, airways or procedures as appropriate. Check that each identifier refers to the intended fix; duplicate or similarly named waypoints can place a route in the wrong region.
- Cross-check the route on published charts. Confirm airspace, minimum altitudes, frequencies, procedures and waypoint sequencing rather than trusting the magenta line alone. - Review the briefing. Examine METARs, TAFs, winds, NOTAMs, airspace restrictions and available radar or satellite imagery. Check the age of each product and use a briefing method that meets the rules applying to the flight.
- Calculate fuel and loading. Include taxi, climb, cruise, diversion and reserve fuel. Performance and weight-and-balance results are only as trustworthy as the profile, loading and environmental values entered.
- File when required. Review the route, altitude, equipment details and times before sending it. A successful filing confirmation does not itself constitute an ATC clearance.
- Run a final cockpit check. Confirm that charts work offline, the position source is valid and the route in Garmin Pilot matches the installed navigator. After transferring a plan to compatible avionics, inspect every waypoint, altitude and procedure on the panel.
How does Garmin Pilot navigation work in flight?
Garmin Pilot displays the aircraft's reported position against the active route, but the source of that position may be the mobile device, an external receiver or connected avionics.
Use the moving map to monitor desired track, actual track, groundspeed, ETA, nearby airspace and route progress. If ATC issues a direct-to clearance or reroute, edit the plan carefully and check what happened to the remaining legs before relying on it.
The app does not drive an autopilot merely because it displays a route. In an equipped aircraft, Garmin Pilot may transfer a flight plan to compatible panel avionics; the installed navigator then supplies approved guidance to the CDI, flight director or autopilot. For IFR operations, approaches and other required navigation must be flown using suitably approved equipment and procedures. Garmin Pilot remains useful for charts and situational awareness, but a tablet position display is not automatically an approved IFR navigation source.
Does Garmin Pilot work without internet access?
Garmin Pilot can show previously downloaded maps, charts and aviation data without internet access, while live weather, new NOTAMs, filing and other online services require connectivity.
- Download all relevant chart regions and databases before departure.
- Open several required charts while still online to confirm that they render correctly.
- Check that the device has enough storage, battery power and a suitable charging arrangement.
- Carry the backup required by local rules or the operator's procedures.
GPS reception itself does not require mobile data, but the device must contain suitable GNSS hardware or receive position from connected equipment. For example, a Wi-Fi-only iPad lacks built-in GNSS and needs a compatible external position source for dependable moving-map use.
Can Garmin Pilot connect to aircraft avionics or a simulator?
Garmin Pilot can exchange selected data with compatible Garmin avionics and portable receivers, but the available functions depend on the exact equipment combination.
A connection may provide GPS position, ADS-B weather, traffic, attitude data or flight-plan transfer. Pair and test the equipment on the ground, then verify the source shown by the app. Never assume that a connected symbol means every data type is available or current.
Some desktop flight simulators can also transmit position to Garmin Pilot directly or through a compatible interface. Support differs by simulator, operating system and app version, so sharing a Wi-Fi network alone is not enough. What Garmin Pilot mistakes cause navigation problems?
Most Garmin Pilot problems come from stale data, incorrect profiles, source confusion or a route that differs from the panel navigator.
- Missing offline charts: a chart thumbnail or cached map is not proof that the whole region has downloaded. Test it with connectivity disabled.
- Wrong units or aircraft figures: pounds versus kilograms and US gallons versus litres can produce dangerous loading or fuel results.
- Stale position: verify GPS accuracy and source status if the aircraft symbol freezes, jumps or disagrees with the panel.
- Route mismatch: procedure names and waypoint sequences can change during transfer. Compare the app and panel leg by leg.
- Filing mistaken for clearance: filing tells the system what is proposed; it does not authorise the flight or route.
- Over-trusting datalink: traffic displays may not show every aircraft, and weather images are delayed. Neither replaces visual scanning or safe thunderstorm separation.
- Tablet failure: heat, glare, depleted batteries and loose charging cables are predictable cockpit risks. Mount the device securely and retain a usable backup.
Can Garmin Pilot replace paper charts or an installed GPS?
Garmin Pilot may replace paper charts when the applicable aviation authority and operator procedures permit EFB use, the data are current and the required backup arrangements are in place. It does not replace an approved installed navigator merely by providing a moving map.
For practical use, treat Garmin Pilot as a planning, briefing and situational-awareness system. Verify its information against current charts, aircraft documentation, ATC instructions and the approved navigation equipment fitted to the aircraft.
