Garmin Pilot is Garmin’s subscription electronic flight bag (EFB) app for iOS and Android. In Aviation & Real-World Flying, pilots use it to plan and file routes, obtain weather and NOTAM briefings, display charts, calculate selected performance data and monitor flights. It supports cockpit decisions; it does not replace approved instruments or pilot judgement.
We treat Garmin Pilot as a portable planning, briefing and situational-awareness system. It is not the same thing as an installed Garmin navigator, an autopilot or a Garmin avionics simulator. Features vary by country, subscription, mobile platform and connected equipment, so two pilots may see different charts, tools and menus.
What Garmin Pilot features are included?
Garmin Pilot combines route planning, aviation data, weather, charts and in-flight monitoring, although not every feature is included on every platform or subscription.

Premium functions may include geo-referenced charts, synthetic vision and more advanced planning or connectivity tools. Check the actual feature list for the mobile operating system and chart region you intend to use; an iOS demonstration does not prove that the Android edition has the same function in the same place.
How does a Garmin Pilot subscription work?
Garmin Pilot is generally sold through recurring subscriptions, with the price and included data determined by the country, platform, coverage region and feature tier.
There is no single worldwide Garmin Pilot subscription that includes every chart and function. The amount displayed through the relevant Garmin account or mobile billing service is the figure to use, including local currency and tax.

A subscription bought through a mobile app store may need to be renewed, restored or cancelled through that same billing channel. Deleting Garmin Pilot does not cancel recurring billing, and signing in with a different Garmin or store account can make an active purchase appear to be missing.
Before renewing, check the countries covered, expiry dates, chart types, operating-system support and whether a desired feature also requires external hardware. Paying for a higher tier cannot add traffic, attitude or datalink weather if the app has no compatible source for that data.
Is Garmin Pilot online, and what is flyGarmin?
Garmin Pilot is primarily a mobile app, while flyGarmin is Garmin’s related aviation account and web-services portal.
People typing “fly Garmin”, “Garmin Fly” or “Garmin flight” are usually looking for either the Pilot app or flyGarmin. The portal can be used for supported account, device and aviation-database services, while eligible accounts may also have browser-based planning or synchronisation functions. Browser tools do not reproduce every in-flight feature of the mobile app.
Use the same Garmin identity associated with the relevant app purchase and aviation products. A Garmin Pilot subscription, a panel database subscription and ownership of a compatible portable receiver are separate things even when they appear under one account.
Does Garmin Pilot work without internet access?
Garmin Pilot works offline for previously downloaded charts and aviation data, but live weather, new NOTAMs, synchronisation and flight-plan filing require a suitable connection.
- Download complete regions: save charts for the departure, destination, alternates and the route between them.
- Check the data cycle: a file stored on the device can still be expired or outside the subscription period.
- Test offline: disable connectivity and open several en-route charts, airport diagrams and approach plates before departure.
- Allow enough storage: regional chart packages can be large, and an interrupted download may leave only partial coverage.
- Plan for power and heat: use a secure mount, a dependable charging arrangement and an appropriate backup.
GPS reception does not require an internet connection or active mobile-data plan. Wi-Fi-only iPads do not contain built-in GNSS, however, so they require a compatible external position source for dependable ownship display. Android tablet hardware varies and must be checked model by model.
What is the history of Garmin Pilot?
Garmin introduced the Garmin Pilot app in 2012 after its earlier Pilot My-Cast mobile aviation weather products.
The app expanded from mobile weather and planning into a broader EFB with charts, filing, performance tools, synthetic vision and connections to selected Garmin equipment. It also developed across iOS and Android, but the two editions have not always gained identical features at the same time.
This history matters when following an old tutorial: the underlying planning principles may remain sound while the menu layout, subscription name, chart package or supported connection has changed. Match instructions to the operating system and app build installed on your device.
How does Garmin Pilot flight planning work?
Garmin Pilot flight planning starts with accurate aircraft data, a valid route and downloaded information that has been checked against weather, NOTAMs and published charts.
- Update the app and aviation data. Download all required chart regions before leaving a dependable internet connection. Confirm that the displayed data cycle is valid for the flight.
- Create or inspect the aircraft profile. Verify fuel capacity, cruise performance, climb and descent assumptions, units and weight-and-balance limits against the aircraft flight manual or pilot’s operating handbook. Treat a generic profile as a starting point, not an authority.
- Enter the departure and destination. Add the intended waypoints, airways and procedures. Check every identifier because similarly named fixes can exist in different regions.
- Inspect the route graphically. Look for unexpected turns, discontinuities, restricted airspace and legs that cross unsuitable terrain. A plausible magenta line is not proof of a legal or safe route.
- Check procedures and altitudes. Confirm runway, transition, waypoint sequence, minimum altitudes and any operational notes using the applicable charts. Procedure availability can differ when the app and panel navigator use different database cycles.

- Calculate fuel and loading. Include taxi, climb, cruise, contingency, diversion and required reserve fuel. Recheck pounds versus kilograms, gallons versus litres and usable versus total fuel.
- File when required. Confirm times, altitude, equipment details, route and contact information before sending. Retain the filing response, but remember that acceptance by the filing system is not permission to fly the route.
- Reconcile the cockpit route. Compare Garmin Pilot with the installed navigator leg by leg, especially after a wireless transfer. Check the active leg, procedure transition, altitude constraints and destination before departure.
When ATC changes a route, edit it deliberately rather than inserting a direct-to command and assuming all later legs remain intact. A direct-to may bypass intermediate fixes, alter procedure sequencing or leave an old route segment active behind the aircraft.
How do you use Garmin Pilot in flight?
In flight, Garmin Pilot should be used to monitor the aircraft’s reported position, active route, weather and surrounding information without displacing the approved instruments or outside lookout.
Before take-off, verify which source supplies position and any connected attitude, traffic or weather data. The source may be the mobile device, an external receiver or installed avionics. If the aircraft symbol freezes, jumps or disagrees with the panel, stop relying on it until the source and accuracy indication have been checked.
The moving map can display desired track, actual track, groundspeed, ETA, nearby airspace and route progress. It does not guarantee obstacle clearance, airspace authorisation or compliance with an ATC clearance. Datalink weather is delayed, and traffic displays may omit aircraft because of equipment, reception or coverage limitations.
For IFR flight, approaches and required navigation must use appropriately approved equipment and procedures. Garmin Pilot remains valuable for chart display and situational awareness, but a tablet ownship symbol does not turn the mobile device into a certified panel navigator.
Can Garmin Pilot control the autopilot?
Garmin Pilot does not directly control an autopilot merely because the app displays a route.
With compatible equipment, the app may transfer a flight plan to the installed navigator. The navigator then generates guidance for the CDI, flight director or autopilot according to the aircraft installation and selected modes. After any transfer, inspect the panel route rather than assuming it matches the app.
Can Garmin Pilot connect to an aviation simulator?
Garmin Pilot can accompany a supported aviation simulator, but it is not itself a Garmin avionics simulator.
A simulator or compatible interface must transmit position data in a form the app recognises. Depending on the combination, integration may provide only ownship position; it may not transfer the route, traffic, weather, attitude or panel state. Sharing the same Wi-Fi network is not enough by itself.
- Confirm explicit compatibility. Check the simulator, computer operating system, mobile platform and required interface rather than relying on instructions for a different edition.
- Connect to the local network. Where network communication is required, place both devices on the same network and allow the app’s local-network permission.
- Enable simulator output. Start the supported connector or data output before expecting Garmin Pilot to detect the simulator.
- Remove network blocks. VPNs, computer firewalls, guest Wi-Fi and router client isolation can prevent devices from seeing one another.
- Verify the selected source. Make sure the app is using simulator data rather than internal GNSS, a previously paired receiver or a demonstration mode.
- Test movement and route data separately. An aircraft icon that moves with the simulator proves only that position is arriving.

Which Garmin Pilot problems cause bad data or missing features?
Most Garmin Pilot failures trace to an incomplete download, expired data, the wrong account, an incorrect source or a mismatch between app and panel databases.

Two operational mistakes deserve separate emphasis. Filing a plan does not issue an ATC clearance, and receiving datalink weather does not make that imagery real time. Both errors can produce a normal-looking screen while leaving the pilot with a false understanding of the flight.
Can Garmin Pilot replace paper charts or an installed GPS?
Garmin Pilot may replace paper charts where the applicable authority and operator permit electronic flight bags, but it does not replace an approved installed navigator simply by displaying GPS position.
Electronic-chart use requires valid data, a readable and secured device, adequate power and whatever backup the operation demands. The sensible backup has an independent failure path; two tablets sharing one charger, account or overheating cockpit location may fail together.
Use Garmin Pilot for planning, briefing, chart access and situational awareness. Use the aircraft’s approved instruments, current aircraft documentation, ATC instructions and authorised navigation equipment for the functions assigned to them.
