Prepar3D v3 is generally the most compatible practical choice for legacy FSX add-ons because it is the final 32-bit Prepar3D release. Simple aircraft and scenery may also work in newer versions, but Prepar3D v4, v5 and v6 are 64-bit, so old 32-bit gauges and in-process DLL modules cannot load.
Why does Prepar3D v3 have the best FSX compatibility?
Prepar3D v3 can host 32-bit in-process code, which is the decisive advantage for complex FSX aircraft and utilities. Prepar3D v1 and v2 are also 32-bit, but v3 is usually the better practical target because it preserves that architecture while incorporating later P3D development.
That does not make every FSX add-on compatible. A module may check the simulator version, depend on FSX-specific code or require an installer and activation system that does not recognise Prepar3D. Technical compatibility and permission are separate: the add-on's licence must also allow P3D use.

Which FSX add-ons work in Prepar3D v4, v5 or v6?
Content-only scenery and uncomplicated aircraft are the most portable FSX add-ons; compiled gauges and simulator modules are the least portable.
- Scenery: Basic airport, mesh, landclass and texture packages often work. Old ground polygons, terrain calls, elevation data and custom modules can produce visual faults or conflicts with the newer base scenery.
- Aircraft models and textures: Many FSX-native models, liveries, configuration files and sound sets will load, but that does not guarantee a working cockpit or correct animations.

- Installers and activation: An FSX-only installer may reject P3D, write to the wrong directory or fail its licence check even when the underlying content would otherwise work.

Should I choose P3D v3 or a 64-bit version?
Choose P3D v3 for an irreplaceable library of legacy FSX aircraft; choose a 64-bit P3D release when version-native add-ons and greater memory headroom matter more than backwards compatibility.
- Choose P3D v3 when your essential aircraft use old compiled panel gauges, FSX-era in-process modules or utilities that never received a 64-bit update. The trade-off is the restricted virtual address space inherent to a 32-bit simulator.
- Choose P3D v4, v5 or v6 when native editions of your critical aircraft, scenery and utilities are available. Match each package to the exact supported major version rather than treating all 64-bit releases as interchangeable.
- Choose v1 or v2 only for a specific dependency explicitly documented for that version. Their chronological closeness to FSX rarely outweighs the practical advantages of v3.
How can I test an FSX add-on safely in Prepar3D?
Test each add-on separately and keep it outside the simulator's core folders wherever the target P3D version supports add-on packages.
- Read the compatibility and licence notes. Look for an explicit reference to your exact Prepar3D version and confirmation that P3D installation is permitted.
- Inspect the package. Aircraft models, textures and ordinary scenery files are promising; compiled gauges, DLL modules, executables and FSX-only installers require closer checking.
- Use an isolated installation. Follow a version-safe Prepar3D installation method instead of copying files blindly into core directories.
- Install one add-on at a time. Start P3D after each addition and test the cockpit, controls, sounds, animations and relevant scenery area.
- Remove failures cleanly. Disable the add-on package or scenery entry and restore any configuration backup. Do not copy an entire FSX installation over Prepar3D or overwrite P3D's original files.
