Are Prepar3D v4 and v5 aircraft compatible with v6?

Prepar3D aircraft are not automatically compatible across major simulator versions, and a v4 or v5 add-on should not be installed into v6 unless its developer explicitly approves that version.

  • Prepar3D v1–v3: These releases are 32-bit, giving some older FSX-origin aircraft their best chance of working, although compatibility is never guaranteed.
  • Prepar3D v4: The move to 64-bit means old 32-bit gauge and module DLLs cannot load, even when the exterior model appears correctly.
  • Prepar3D v5: Its DirectX 12 renderer and revised platform require a supported aircraft build. A v4 installer recognising the folder does not prove compatibility.

An add-on.xml file only tells Prepar3D where a package is located. It cannot make an incompatible gauge, DLL, flight model or visual model work. Are freeware Prepar3D aircraft worth using?

  3. Check package dependencies. An A319 or A321 expansion may require an A320 base package, while military functionality may depend on a separate tactical module.
  4. Confirm the included variant. Engine type, winglet configuration, cockpit generation and passenger or cargo model can affect both liveries and procedures.
  5. Check installer and activation access. Some landmark P3D products are legacy releases. Make sure a compatible installer can still be obtained and activated before buying.
  6. Allow for controls and performance. The Q400 and complex airliners benefit from carefully calibrated throttle axes, while detailed avionics can reduce performance at equally demanding airports.

What commonly goes wrong after installation?

Most failed aircraft installations come down to a wrong-version binary, a missing base package or an incorrectly nested aircraft folder.

  • If the aircraft is absent from the menu, locate aircraft.cfg and make sure it is not buried one folder deeper than intended.
  • If the exterior loads but analogue gauges or displays are blank, check electrical power first, then investigate whether the gauges support the simulator’s 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
  • If a livery is invisible, confirm it was made for the same aircraft model, engine and variant, not merely the same real-world type.
  • If throttles, spoilers or flight controls move erratically, remove duplicate assignments created across P3D and the device’s own configuration software.
