What is simulator sickness, and how do you prevent it?

Simulator sickness is motion-sickness-like discomfort caused when visual motion in a flight simulator conflicts with what the inner ear and body feel. To prevent it, start with short, gentle sessions, maintain smooth frame delivery, use a stable forward view and stop immediately when symptoms begin rather than trying to push through.

Why does flight simulation cause motion sickness?

Flight simulator sickness happens because the eyes report acceleration, banking or turning while the vestibular system reports that the body is stationary. This sensory conflict is especially strong in VR, where the moving image fills most of the visual field, but large monitors, triple-screen systems and projectors can cause it too.

Low-level flight, rapid taxi turns, turbulence, helicopters, aerobatics and looking sideways during a bank produce strong visual motion. Delayed head tracking, incorrect field of view, camera shake and irregular frame times add another mismatch between expected and displayed movement.

Common symptoms include:

  • Nausea, increased salivation or a cold sweat
  • Dizziness, disorientation or loss of balance
  • Headache, eyestrain or difficulty focusing
  • Fatigue, warmth or an unexplained urge to stop

The first warning is not always nausea. Eyestrain, sweating or a mild headache can appear before the more obvious symptoms.

How can you prevent flight simulator sickness?

The most reliable prevention is controlled, symptom-free exposure combined with a smooth and correctly configured display.

  1. Begin with low-motion flying. Choose daylight, calm weather and a slow, stable aircraft already established in straight-and-level flight. Avoid taxiing, external cameras, helicopters, turbulence, aerobatics and low-level manoeuvring at first.
  2. Keep early sessions brief. Five to ten minutes is a sensible starting point for a new VR user, but there is no universal schedule. Finish while still comfortable and extend later sessions gradually.
  3. Prioritise consistency over graphics. Reduce render resolution and demanding effects until turning your head or banking does not produce repeated stutters. A lower but stable image rate is usually more comfortable than a high average rate interrupted by frame-time spikes.
  4. Use a stable cockpit view. Disable head bob, camera shake, cinematic movement and motion blur where the simulator offers those options. Keep the cockpit visible as a fixed visual reference and avoid rapidly switching cameras.
  5. Correct the viewing geometry. On a monitor, set a field of view that roughly matches its size and viewing distance rather than zooming excessively wide. In VR, adjust the headset position, lens spacing or IPD control and then rec recentre the view from a natural seated posture.
  6. Reduce avoidable aggravating factors. Fly while rested, remain hydrated, avoid alcohol and do not begin immediately after a heavy meal. A cool room and a desk fan can help by reducing heat and providing a steady real-world directional cue.
  7. Stop at the first warning. Do not try to build tolerance by continuing through nausea or dizziness. Repeatedly pushing too far can condition the brain to associate the headset or simulator with feeling ill.

Which settings reduce simulator sickness?

The best comfort settings are those that minimise latency, judder, tracking errors and artificial camera motion, even if that means accepting less visual detail.

Does VR cause more simulator sickness than a monitor?

VR is more likely to cause simulator sickness because it provides wide-field visual motion and couples the image directly to head movement. It is not inevitable, though: accurate tracking, low latency and consistent frame delivery make a substantial difference.

What should you do when symptoms begin?

Stop the simulation as soon as symptoms appear, pause the aircraft and remove the headset while remaining seated. Look at a stationary real-world object, cool down and rest until every symptom has cleared before considering another session.

Do not stand abruptly if you feel disorientated, and do not drive or operate equipment while dizziness or visual disturbance remains. Persistent or severe symptoms, vomiting, symptoms outside simulation or repeated balance problems warrant medical advice. Motion-sickness medicines can cause drowsiness, so they should not be used casually to force longer sessions.

Can you build tolerance to flight simulator sickness?

Some users develop tolerance through gradual sessions that end before symptoms start, but pushing through sickness is not effective acclimatisation. Begin with straight-and-level flight, use autopilot if already familiar with it, and introduce turns, approaches, taxiing and rough weather one element at a time.

If discomfort returns at a particular stage, shorten the session or return to the previous level of motion. Some people remain sensitive to VR despite careful setup; switching to a monitor is a valid comfort decision, not a training failure.
