Completion normally involves:
- Instructor assessments: The school checks competence throughout the course and before important milestones such as first solo and cross-country flying.
- Knowledge examination: The student must pass the written or computer-based theory exam or exams required by the authority.
- Practical test: An authorised examiner assesses planning, aircraft handling, navigation, emergency procedures and judgement. Some systems include an oral questioning element.
Common PPL training mistakes
- Chasing the minimum hours: The licence is awarded for meeting the required standard, not merely for filling a logbook.
- Leaving theory until late: Weak knowledge of weather, performance or airspace slows practical lessons and creates avoidable risk.
- Flying too infrequently: Long gaps cause repeated revision, particularly during landing and circuit training.

Does PPL training include night, instrument or simulator time?
A standard PPL course includes only the instrument-reference training specified by the relevant authority; it does not provide an instrument rating or permission to fly in instrument meteorological conditions. Night flying may be included, optional or handled through a separate night qualification, depending on the country and licence system.
Multi-engine flying, aerobatics, advanced aircraft differences training and commercial operations are not normally part of a basic single-engine PPL course. Separate ratings, endorsements or further training may be required.
A home flight simulator can help rehearse checklists, navigation, instrument scans and lesson sequences, but its time normally cannot be entered as aircraft flight time.
