Should flight sim beginners fly propeller aircraft or jets?

Why are propeller aircraft better for flight sim beginners?

A basic propeller trainer lets beginners learn pitch, power, trim and rudder coordination without the speed or systems workload of a jet. The aircraft remains close to the airport during circuit practice, control inputs take effect at a manageable pace, and an unstable approach develops slowly enough to recognise and correct.

A typical airliner adds flight management, autoflight modes, pressurisation, multiple electrical and hydraulic systems, high approach speeds and greater momentum. Automation can make it appear easy, but selecting the wrong mode or arriving too high and fast quickly exposes gaps in basic flying skills.

Which propeller aircraft is best for a beginner?

  • Good first choices: conventional two- or four-seat trainers with modest performance and simple systems.
  • Save for later: taildraggers, aerobatic aircraft, powerful warbirds, multi-engine pistons and aircraft with demanding engine-management limits.
  • Use one aircraft consistently: changing models every flight makes it harder to recognise how pitch, trim and power should feel.

Glass instruments are not inherently unsuitable, but analogue gauges often make the relationship between attitude, power and performance easier to see. If using a glass cockpit, resist spending the whole flight programming avionics while the autopilot handles the aircraft.

Are jets ever a sensible first aircraft?

A jet can be a reasonable first choice when the beginner's main goal is learning that specific aircraft rather than building broad manual-flying skills. Modern flight-control systems may make some jets stable and easy to point, but they do not remove the need to manage speed, configuration and descent planning.

Starting with a jet makes most sense when:

  • the pilot is primarily interested in airline cockpit procedures or a particular military aircraft;
  • the aircraft has good built-in guidance and can begin in a ready-to-fly state;
  • the first flights use daylight, calm weather, a long runway and no simulated failures;
  • systems are introduced one at a time rather than through an immediate cold-and-dark departure.

A turboprop is not automatically an easy halfway step. Propeller levers, condition levers, torque limits and temperature management can give it a higher engine workload than a simple jet, even though it flies more slowly.

When should you move from a propeller aircraft to a jet?

Move to a jet when you can control a trainer manually without constant large corrections and can complete an ordinary flight without relying on the autopilot to rescue it. You do not need perfect landings, but these tasks should be repeatable:

  • take off while maintaining directional control and the intended climb speed;
  • trim after changes in power, speed or configuration;
  • hold a target heading, altitude and airspeed with small corrections;
  • fly a rectangular circuit and establish a stable final approach;
  • land near the runway centreline or initiate a prompt go-around;
  • recognise an approaching stall, overspeed or excessive descent rate;
  • follow a short checklist while continuing to fly the aircraft.

What is a sensible aircraft progression?

  2. Repeat take-offs, circuits and go-arounds. Use clear weather before adding crosswinds, poor visibility or failures.
  3. Add navigation and cockpit workload. Fly short trips using visual references, basic radio navigation or the aircraft's GPS while continuing to hand-fly.
  4. Add complexity only when it serves a purpose. A retractable-gear piston, light twin or turboprop can teach configuration and engine management, but none is a compulsory step before jets.
  5. Introduce the jet by phase of flight. Learn manual take-off, climb, descent and landing first, then add the flight management system and autopilot modes. Leave full cold-and-dark operation and demanding instrument weather until the normal flight is familiar.

What mistakes slow beginner progress?

  • Using autopilot too early: automation practises mode selection, not manual control. Hand-fly the trainer until trim and attitude control stop consuming all your attention.
  • Treating the throttle as a car accelerator: speed depends on pitch, power, drag and aircraft configuration. Make a change, allow the aircraft to respond, then trim.
  • Starting every jet approach too high and fast: begin descent and deceleration early enough to configure gradually. If the approach is not stable, go around instead of forcing the landing.
  • Selecting a propeller aircraft because all props seem easy: a tailwheel warbird or high-performance twin defeats the reason for starting with a trainer.
  • Changing aircraft after every poor landing: remain with one model and correct one fault at a time, such as speed control, flare height or centreline tracking.

Does this choice matter for real-world flight training?

Starting with a simple propeller trainer also aligns better with the aircraft used for most initial real-world training, but a desktop simulator cannot reproduce control forces, peripheral vision or physical acceleration accurately.
