Why do racing pedals not map to the rudder automatically?
A flight simulator normally expects one centred analogue rudder axis, while racing pedals usually report two independent axes.
A conventional rudder axis has full left at one end, neutral in the middle and full right at the other. An accelerator or brake pedal instead travels from released to fully pressed on its own 0-to-100% axis. Assigning one of those pedals to a full rudder axis therefore leaves the rudder at or near one extreme when the pedal is released.
Some simulators provide separate analogue left-rudder and right-rudder half-axis commands. Where those are available, each racing pedal can be assigned directly. Otherwise, the two inputs must be merged so the left pedal generates negative rudder, the right generates positive rudder and releasing both returns the output to centre.

Many pedal sets also use a proprietary socket on their wheel base rather than a direct USB connection. The wheel base must then remain connected and powered, even if the steering wheel itself has no flight control assignment.
How to use racing pedals as rudder pedals on PC
The correct setup depends on whether the simulator accepts two analogue rudder half-axes or requires one combined axis.
- Connect the complete pedal system. If the pedals plug into a wheel base, connect the base to the PC and install or enable its proper driver. Confirm that the controller appears in the operating system or manufacturer control panel before starting the simulator.
- Inspect the raw pedal inputs. Press each pedal separately while watching the axis indicators. Two independent bars mean the pedals are separate axes. A single indicator moving to opposite sides of a central neutral point means a combined-pedals mode is already active.
- Choose one mapping method. Use separate analogue left/right rudder axis commands if the simulator provides them. If it expects one rudder axis, enable the wheel driver's combined-pedals mode. When neither option exists, PC controller-mapping software can create a virtual centred axis conceptually equivalent to

- Calibrate direction and neutral. With both pedals released, the rudder indicator should sit in the centre. Pressing the left pedal should command left rudder and pressing the right should command right rudder. Reverse the relevant axis if necessary, then add only enough dead zone to stop neutral jitter.
- Test the full travel. Check the simulator's input indicator and the aircraft's rudder surface before taxiing. Move each pedal through its complete range, release it and confirm that the rudder returns to neutral. Save the result in a dedicated controller profile if the simulator supports profiles.
On a three-pedal set, use the two pedals with the most similar travel and resistance if the driver allows that choice. A stiff brake or load-cell pedal paired with a light accelerator produces uneven left and right forces. Some drivers can combine only the accelerator and brake, so the best-feeling pair may not be available.
Pressing both racing pedals together usually makes a combined virtual axis cancel back towards neutral. That is another difference from mechanically linked flight pedals, where pushing one side moves the opposite pedal towards the pilot.
How do I map racing pedals to the rudder axis in MSFS 2020 or MSFS 2024?
In MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 on PC, use separate analogue left/right rudder axis bindings when the controls profile exposes them; otherwise feed MSFS one combined centred axis.
Select the wheel or virtual controller in the controls settings and search for rudder commands. Look for entries whose names include Axis. A plain left/right rudder command is generally a button-style control and is not the correct place for a progressive pedal input.
When separate left and right rudder axes are available, assign one physical pedal to each and reverse their directions individually if required. If only the full Rudder Axis gives suitable analogue behaviour, combine the pedals in the wheel driver or a PC virtual-controller layer, then assign that single output.
Create a separate flight profile rather than overwriting a racing profile, and inspect every automatically generated assignment. A mistake we see constantly is leaving the physical accelerator and brake axes active after binding the combined virtual axis. This can move the rudder, throttle and wheel brakes at the same time.
Disable automatic-rudder or yaw assistance while testing. With dedicated MSFS rudder pedals, the expected arrangement is one centred rudder axis plus separate left and right brake axes on models equipped with toe brakes.

Most racing-pedal failures come from assigning a half-axis as a full rudder axis, retaining duplicate bindings or using button commands instead of analogue commands.

Are racing pedals a good substitute for flight rudder pedals?
Racing pedals are useful when you already own them and need basic yaw control, but dedicated flight rudder pedals provide better centring, coordination and braking.

Can racing pedals also provide toe brakes?
Two racing pedals cannot act as both a proper rudder axis and independent toe brakes at the same time.
A flight pedal set with toe brakes normally presents three analogue axes: one linked rudder axis, one left brake axis and one right brake axis. Combining two racing pedals into the rudder consumes both inputs. A third racing pedal can provide one common brake axis, but it does not reproduce separate left and right toe braking.
Do not assign the same two pedals to rudder and wheel brakes. Every yaw correction would then apply a brake, causing unwanted drag and pulling the aircraft during take-off or landing.
Will racing pedals steer the aircraft while taxiing?
Racing pedals mapped to rudder will steer during taxi only where the simulated aircraft couples rudder-pedal input to its nosewheel or tailwheel.
The steering angle and behaviour vary by aircraft. Some aeroplanes use a separate tiller, some have limited pedal-controlled nosewheel steering, and free-castoring aircraft rely heavily on differential braking. A correctly moving rudder axis therefore does not guarantee tight ground turns.
Do not test yaw by expecting a stationary aircraft to rotate when a pedal is pressed. A rudder needs airflow to create aerodynamic yaw, and some detailed aircraft may also require hydraulic pressure before the visible control surface moves. Use the controls indicator or a straightforward aircraft to confirm the binding first.
Will racing pedals work as rudders on Xbox or PlayStation?
Racing pedals work on a console only when the exact wheel base is recognised by that flight simulator and its pedal axes can be reassigned appropriately.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is available on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5/PS5 Pro. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 remains a PC and Xbox title. Availability of the simulator on a console does not mean a racing wheel supported by console racing games will work in the flight simulator.
Consoles do not normally offer the desktop virtual-controller tools used to merge two physical pedal axes. If the simulator lacks separate analogue left/right rudder assignments and the wheel firmware lacks a combined-pedals mode, there is no general console workaround. Dedicated flight controls explicitly compatible with the simulator and console are the safer choice.
