How do I get real airline liveries on MSFS AI traffic?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Get MSFS AI traffic with real airline liveries on PC, avoid generic aircraft and duplicates, and understand the limits on Xbox and PlayStation.

To get AI traffic with real airline liveries in Microsoft Flight Simulator, install an AI aircraft model-and-livery library and pair it with a compatible traffic injector or live-traffic source. This is practical on PC; Xbox and the PlayStation version of MSFS 2024 cannot run Windows injectors or accept Community-folder packages.

What supplies the real airline liveries?

Realistic airline traffic needs three components: flight data, an injector and a library of optimised AI aircraft models and liveries. Some products combine these components, while others require separate installations.

  • Traffic data supplies the airline, flight number, route and aircraft type.
  • The injector creates and controls each aircraft inside the simulator.
  • The model library supplies the correct airframe and airline paint scheme.

Installing liveries intended for a flyable airliner usually does not make them appear on AI traffic. AI packages use specially configured, lower-detail aircraft designed to limit memory use and rendering load.

Which AI traffic option should I choose?

OptionBest choice whenMain limitation
Built-in live trafficYou want the simplest setup with no external programGeneric aircraft or incorrect liveries may appear when an exact model match is unavailable
FSLTLYou want live-data traffic with a dedicated model and livery library on PCThe Base Models and injector are separate components, and both must be installed
AIGYou prioritise broad airline, aircraft and livery coverageInstallation and airline configuration are more involved
FS TrafficYou prefer a managed commercial package with its own fleet and scheduled trafficIt is schedule-based rather than a direct representation of every live flight

For most PC users, an injector with its own model library gives more predictable livery matching than built-in traffic alone. Our comparison of MSFS traffic injectors and their model coverage explains where each approach fits.

How do I install AI traffic with airline liveries?

  1. Choose one traffic system first. Start with FSLTL, AIG, FS Traffic or the simulator's built-in traffic rather than running several injectors together.
  2. Install the aircraft library. An injector by itself cannot display real liveries. For FSLTL, for example, the Base Models component is required as well as the injector.
  3. Check that the package is active. Community packages must be in the Community folder used by that particular MSFS installation. Avoid an extra nested folder level, and confirm that the package supports MSFS 2020 or MSFS 2024 as appropriate.
  4. Disable competing traffic. When using an external injector, turn off the simulator's built-in live or offline AI aircraft source. Do not disable all online services if the chosen injector needs internet access. Setting ground-aircraft density low or to zero also prevents generic parked aircraft from filling the stands.
  5. Load the flight before injecting traffic. Many injectors work best once the aircraft is at the departure airport. Allow time for flight data to load and aircraft to spawn.
  6. Set sensible traffic limits. Begin with a moderate number of active and parked aircraft, especially at a large hub, then increase the limits if performance remains stable.

For a fuller walkthrough, use our PC setup instructions for real-world traffic and model libraries. Menu names differ between MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024, but the rule remains the same: only one system should control AI traffic.

Why are some AI aircraft still generic or incorrectly painted?

A generic or incorrect aircraft means the traffic system could not make an exact model-and-livery match, or another source created the aircraft.

  • Missing base models: update or reinstall the complete model library, not just the injector.
  • Wrong Community folder: verify which folder the simulator is actually reading, particularly if both MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 are installed.
  • No exact livery: a small airline, special scheme or unusual aircraft subtype may not exist in the library, so the injector selects a fallback.
  • Duplicate traffic sources: built-in live traffic and an external injector can create two versions of the same flight.
  • Generic parked aircraft: the simulator's ground-aircraft setting can populate gates independently of the injector.
  • Multiplayer aircraft: other players are not AI flights and may appear with generic models when their aircraft or livery is unavailable locally.
  • Old duplicate packages: two versions of the same model library can cause conflicts, missing textures or unexpected matching.

After a simulator update, check that both the injector and model library remain compatible before replacing files at random. MSFS 2024 users with absent traffic can work through our traffic-source and package troubleshooting checks.

Can consoles use real-airline AI traffic add-ons?

Console users cannot install PC Community packages or run external injector programs. Xbox users in MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024, plus PlayStation 5 users in MSFS 2024, must use built-in traffic or add-ons explicitly distributed for their platform.

This means livery coverage depends on the aircraft assets available inside the console version. A PC injector package cannot be copied across, and real airline branding may also be limited by licensing.

Will detailed AI traffic reduce frame rate?

Yes. AI traffic adds CPU work for flight behaviour and draw calls for every visible aircraft, with the largest impact at busy hubs.

Reduce active aircraft, parked-aircraft distance and ground density before lowering unrelated graphics settings. Our AI traffic performance settings guide covers the adjustments that usually recover the most performance without emptying the airport.
