Find why terrain disappeared in FSX or FSX: Steam Edition, then restore scenery layers, indexes, terrain.cfg and damaged default files safely.
In FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, terrain usually disappears because a scenery area is disabled or misregistered, the scenery indexes or terrain.cfg are damaged, an add-on is overriding default data, or core files are missing. Isolate whether the fault affects one region or the whole world, then restore only the affected layer or file.
What kind of FSX terrain is missing?
The symptom usually identifies which part of the scenery system has failed.

How do I restore disappeared terrain in FSX?
The safest repair is to work from the newest add-on backwards and stop as soon as the terrain returns.
- Back up the active configuration: Close FSX and preserve
scenery.cfg,terrain.cfg,FSX.cfgand any manually installed scenery. Our guide to backing up FSX settings and add-on registrations covers the files and paths that matter. FSX: Steam Edition may use an FSX- or FSX-SE-named profile folder, particularly on computers that have also had boxed FSX installed. - Confirm the scope: Load untouched default locations on different continents. If only one region fails, concentrate on its add-ons. If every location is affected, skip ahead to the scenery indexes and core-file checks.
- Disable recent scenery: In the Scenery Library, untick the newest mesh, landclass, vector, photo-scenery or airport package. Apply the change and restart FSX. Disable packages one at a time rather than deleting them, because removing several together hides which one caused the fault.
- Check the registered folder level: An FSX scenery area should normally point to the package folder containing a
scenerysubfolder and, when supplied, a siblingtexturefolder. The actual BGL files belong insidescenery. A mistake we see constantly is selecting a folder one level too high or registering the innersceneryfolder itself. - Inspect stock scenery layers: Make sure the default layers remain active and their paths lead to the installation FSX is actually running. This is especially relevant after moving FSX, changing drives or reinstalling one edition alongside another. Do not replace
scenery.cfgwith a file from another installation; add-on paths and layer numbering may differ. - Rebuild the scenery indexes: With FSX closed, find the active profile's
SceneryIndexesfolder under the Windows shared application-data location and rename it toSceneryIndexes.old. Start FSX and let it rebuild the indexes. Rename rather than delete so the original remains available, and do not removescenery.cfgduring this step. - Restore terrain and default files: The stock
terrain.cfgsits in the main FSX installation folder beside the simulator executable. Restore it from a known matching backup, verify the FSX: Steam Edition installation files, or use the boxed installer’s repair option. Verification or repair may replace modified stock files, so preserve intentional changes first. Never substitute aterrain.cfgfrom Prepar3D or another simulator. - Reset rendering only when textures fail to draw: Turn off
DirectX 10 Previewas a diagnostic step, particularly with older ground-texture add-ons. If the problem persists, rename the activeFSX.cfgand let FSX create a clean one. This resets display and simulator settings; it does not rebuild the separate scenery library configuration.
scenery.cfg registers scenery areas, terrain.cfg defines terrain behaviour, and FSX.cfg contains display and simulator settings. Deleting one does not repair the others. We do not recommend deleting the complete stock Scenery or Texture directories; repair or verification is safer and preserves the installation structure.
Why is FSX terrain visible but completely flat?
Visible ground with missing hills is normally a mesh or flatten problem, not disappeared terrain.
Check that the mesh area is active, its BGL files are in the correct scenery folder, and an airport or vector add-on has not introduced an oversized flatten polygon. Mesh resolution and mesh complexity affect elevation detail, but reducing those settings does not normally remove land textures. What if airports are missing but the surrounding ground remains?
Missing airport surfaces or buildings with otherwise normal terrain indicate an airport-layer problem.
Check airport add-ons, exclusions and stock airport layers rather than replacing global terrain files. Use our checklist to restore missing FSX airports without disturbing working terrain.
What if FSX crashes while loading the terrain?
A crash naming Terrain.dll usually points to scenery data being processed when the failure occurred, not proof that the DLL itself is defective.
