Why has terrain disappeared in FSX, and how do I restore it?

In FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, disappeared terrain is usually caused by a disabled or misregistered scenery area, damaged scenery indexes or configuration files, a conflicting add-on, or missing stock elevation and texture data. First determine whether one region or the whole world is affected, then repair that layer rather than reinstalling everything.

Test at stock locations on different continents. A problem confined to one area is almost always regional scenery; the same fault worldwide points to the default layers, configuration or core installation.

How do I restore disappeared terrain in FSX?

The safest recovery sequence starts with the newest scenery change and progresses to stock-file repair only if the fault remains.

  1. Back up the active configuration. Close FSX and copy scenery.cfg, terrain.cfg, FSX.cfg and any manually installed scenery before changing them. The active scenery.cfg is normally under %PROGRAMDATA%\Microsoft\FSX or an FSX-SE equivalent, while FSX.cfg is under the corresponding %APPDATA%\Microsoft folder. terrain.cfg belongs in the main FSX installation directory.
  2. Identify the active FSX profile. Steam-only installations may still use folders named FSX; systems that have hosted both editions may also contain FSX-SE folders. Change a harmless simulator setting, close FSX and check which FSX.cfg received the newest modification time rather than assuming from the folder name.
  3. Disable the latest add-ons one at a time. In the Scenery Library, untick recently added mesh, landclass, vector, photo scenery and airports. Apply the change, allow FSX to rebuild its scenery database and restart the simulator before testing. Do not delete several packages together, because that conceals which one caused the failure.
  4. Check the registered folder level. A scenery area should normally point to the package folder containing a scenery subfolder and, where supplied, a sibling texture folder. The BGL files belong inside scenery. A mistake we see constantly is registering the inner scenery folder itself or selecting a directory one level too high; our guide to correcting scenery that FSX refuses to display covers those folder and database faults.
  5. Inspect the stock scenery entries. Confirm that Default Terrain and the regional stock layers are present, active and directed to the installation FSX is actually running. Default Terrain should resolve to the parent Scenery\World directory, not its inner scenery subfolder. If stock entries have vanished, paths are invalid or the area numbering is damaged, use the safer procedure for repairing the active FSX scenery.cfg instead of copying one from another installation.
  6. Rebuild the scenery indexes. With FSX closed, find the SceneryIndexes folder beneath the active simulator folder in %PROGRAMDATA% and rename it to SceneryIndexes.old. Start FSX and wait while it creates fresh indexes. This does not restore missing library entries, so leave scenery.cfg in place during this step.
  7. Restore matching stock files. For FSX: Steam Edition, run the platform's installed-file verification. For boxed FSX, use the original installer's repair facility. Back up intentional modifications first because verification or repair can replace edited stock files, including terrain.cfg. If the simulator reports a missing DEM4KM.BGL or the whole world has lost its base elevation, follow the specific steps for restoring the stock elevation file and Default Terrain entry.
  8. Reset graphics configuration only for drawing faults. Disable DirectX 10 Preview as a diagnostic test, particularly with older texture add-ons. If black, white or untextured ground remains, rename the active FSX.cfg to FSX.cfg.old and let FSX generate a clean file. This resets display settings and custom tweaks; it does not repair the separate Scenery Library configuration.

scenery.cfg registers scenery areas, terrain.cfg defines terrain classes and behaviour, and FSX.cfg stores display and simulator settings. They are not interchangeable, and deleting one will not repair the other two.

Do not delete the complete stock Scenery or Texture directories, and do not install isolated DLL or BGL files taken from another simulator. Use files that match the FSX edition being repaired.

Why is the ground visible but completely flat?

Visible ground textures with missing hills indicate an elevation-mesh or flatten problem rather than lost land textures.

If the entire world is flat, inspect Default Terrain and the stock elevation data first. If only one region is flat, confirm that its mesh BGL files are present and its scenery area is active. Lower Mesh Resolution and Mesh Complexity settings soften terrain detail, but they do not normally remove all stock elevation.

Flat ground confined to an airport or its surroundings usually comes from an airport flatten polygon. Disable the airport package before blaming the mesh. A malformed or oversized flatten can suppress elevation across a much larger area than the airport itself.

Black, white or untextured ground

Abnormal colours usually point to missing texture assets or a rendering compatibility problem, not to absent elevation data.

Disable texture, landclass and photo-scenery packages covering the affected area, then test with DirectX 10 Preview off. If the fault appears only in one season, a seasonal texture variant may be absent. If stock scenery also renders incorrectly after creating a clean FSX.cfg, repair or verify the installation files.

What should I do if Terrain.dll crashes while loading scenery?

A crash naming Terrain.dll usually means FSX failed while processing scenery data; it does not prove that the DLL itself is defective.

Disable the newest regional package, rebuild SceneryIndexes and test a default location. If the crash continues, use our Terrain.dll scenery-isolation and core-file checks before replacing any files. Never download a substitute DLL as a first fix.

Reinstallation is the last resort

A complete reinstall is rarely necessary until add-on isolation, index rebuilding and stock-file repair have failed.

Reinstalling FSX may leave the old files under %PROGRAMDATA% and %APPDATA%, allowing a damaged scenery.cfg or FSX.cfg to affect the new installation. Preserve those files as backups, then make sure FSX is testing newly generated configuration rather than silently reusing the original fault.
