Is judgement more important than flying skill?

Judgement determines when and how technical flying skills should be used, but neither can replace the other.

A pilot with polished handling but poor go/no-go decisions can create situations that no amount of skill will rescue. Strong judgement means setting limits before pressure builds, recognising deteriorating conditions and choosing a diversion, delay or go-around without treating it as failure.

What habits separate safe pilots from merely competent pilots?

Safe pilots make preparation, verification and early decision-making routine rather than relying on skill under pressure.

  1. Prepare before moving: Check personal fitness, aircraft status, weather, route, airspace, fuel, performance and alternatives. Legal minima are limits, not targets for routine operation.
  2. Brief threats and decision points: Decide beforehand what would trigger a rejected take-off, return, diversion or go-around. Predetermined gates are harder to rationalise away when workload rises.
  3. Use approved checklists deliberately: Complete the required action, identify the relevant control or indication and verify its state. Flows may support a checklist where the procedure permits, but they do not replace it. Memory actions should be limited to items specifically designated for immediate recall.
  4. Stay ahead of the aircraft: Complete checks, radio preparation and configuration changes before the busiest phase. A traffic-pattern planning drill that moves checks earlier is a practical way to develop this habit.
  5. Protect spare mental capacity: Prioritise aviate, navigate and communicate. If workload becomes excessive, simplify the task, use suitable automation, request time or space, or discontinue the approach as appropriate.
  6. Debrief honestly: Describe what happened, why it happened and what will change next time. Seeking instructor or crew feedback is a sign of professionalism, not weakness.

The most dangerous habits are those that hide deteriorating safety margins or prevent a pilot from recognising an error.

Can a flight simulator build good pilot habits?

A flight simulator can strengthen instrument scanning, trim use, procedural recall, navigation setup, workload management and decision-making when each session has a defined objective.

Begin with structured practice in trim, manual control and stable approaches. Fly the scenario without pausing or reloading to erase a poor decision, record specific deviations, then repeat while changing only one major variable.

Simulation can also reinforce bad habits: staring inside the cockpit, overcontrolling because physical feedback is limited, following a navigation line without positional awareness or trusting an add-on whose systems differ from the real aircraft. Desktop simulation cannot reproduce all control forces, motion cues, stress or consequences, and aircraft fidelity varies. It supplements rather than replaces formal instruction, supervised flying and ground study.

Signs that your piloting is improving

Improvement appears as earlier preparation, smaller corrections and safer decisions rather than one exceptionally smooth flight.

  • You detect deviations sooner and correct them without starting an oscillation.
  • You complete configuration and checks early enough to preserve spare capacity.
  • You can explain the aircraft's state, the next action and the fallback plan.
