What habits make a good pilot safer and more consistent?

Safe pilots turn preparation, verification and early decision-making into repeatable habits rather than relying on memory or skill under pressure.

  1. Check personal fitness: Consider illness, medication, fatigue, stress, alcohol effects and any other factor that could impair performance. Being legal to fly does not necessarily mean being fit to fly.
  2. Prepare the whole operation: Review aircraft status, weather, route, airspace, fuel, loading, performance and usable alternatives. Legal minima are boundaries, not sensible targets for routine operation.
  3. Set decision points in advance: Define what will trigger a rejected take-off, return, diversion, missed approach or go-around. Predetermined gates are harder to rationalise away when workload and commitment rise.
  4. Use checklists as verification: Identify the relevant control or indication, complete the required action and confirm the result. Which skills belong on a pilot resume?

Skills for a pilot resume should be relevant to the advertised operation, demonstrable from training or experience, and supported by specific evidence elsewhere in the application.

Separate credentials from skills. Licences, ratings, medical status, aircraft qualifications and flight-time totals belong in a clearly labelled qualifications or experience section. They should not be hidden inside a list of generic abilities.

  • Technical skills: Aircraft handling, flight planning, weather interpretation, fuel planning, performance calculations, navigation, radio communication, aircraft systems and instrument procedures where qualified.
  • Operational skills: Checklist and SOP discipline, threat and error management, aeronautical decision-making, workload management and automation monitoring.
  • Team skills: Crew resource management, concise communication, briefing, cross-checking, leadership and constructive challenge. Include only those supported by actual crew, training or workplace experience.
  • Training skills: Instruction, mentoring, standardisation or checking experience where applicable and properly authorised.

How should pilot skills be written on a resume?

Write each skill with evidence rather than relying on unsupported words such as excellent, passionate or safety-conscious.

For example, a training applicant might accurately write: Flight planning and decision-making — prepared cross-country plans covering weather, aircraft performance, fuel and alternatives during supervised training. A multi-crew applicant could describe the briefings, call-outs, monitoring or coordination duties actually performed.

Do not claim a type rating, instrument qualification, command role or aircraft experience that you do not hold. Desktop simulator time may demonstrate personal interest and procedural practice, but it must not be presented as real flight time, approved training or operational experience.

Can a flight simulator build good pilot habits?

A flight simulator can develop scanning, trim use, procedural recall, navigation setup, workload management and decision-making when every session has a defined objective.

Practise one measurable standard at a time, such as maintaining altitude within a chosen tolerance, completing checks before a workload gate or making an early diversion decision. Fly the full consequence of a mistake instead of pausing or reloading merely to erase it, then review the cause and repeat the exercise with only one major variable changed.

Simulation can also reinforce poor habits. Common examples include staring inside the cockpit, overcontrolling because physical feedback is limited, following a magenta line without maintaining positional awareness and trusting an add-on whose systems do not accurately represent the real aircraft.

Desktop simulation cannot reproduce all control forces, motion cues, stress, visibility effects or consequences. Aircraft fidelity and simulated air traffic control also vary, so it supplements rather than replaces formal pilot training, supervised flying and ground instruction.

How can you tell that your piloting is improving?

Piloting is improving when preparation happens earlier, corrections become smaller and safe decisions require less hesitation.

  • You finish checks and configuration early enough to retain spare mental capacity.
