Which control steers an aircraft while taxiing?

The normal taxi steering control is the rudder axis, which operates the rudder and, in many tricycle-gear aircraft, is linked to the nose wheel. Aileron input controls the roll surfaces and may be needed for wind correction, but it does not normally turn the aircraft along a taxiway.

Rudder pedals give the best control, followed by a joystick twist grip. With a standard gamepad profile, the triggers normally command left and right rudder, but customised profiles should always be checked. Keyboard steering works, although short taps are necessary because a key can apply an abrupt digital input.

How do I steer while taxiing in MSFS?

Taxi slowly enough that small steering inputs can change direction without tyre scrub, skidding or tipping the aircraft.

  1. Check the rudder binding. In the controls menu, bind an analogue input to Rudder Axis. Search for tiller or steering assignments as well if the aircraft models a separate nose-wheel control.
  2. Set up the brakes. Assign left and right brake axes if your pedals have toe brakes. A combined brake button will stop the aircraft but cannot provide differential braking.
  3. Prepare the aircraft. Release the parking brake, remove any wheel chocks and finish the pushback procedure. Some aircraft leave nose-wheel steering disconnected while attached to a tug.
  4. Start rolling gently. Use idle or a small amount of power. Steering is easier once the tyres are moving, but tight turns should be made at roughly walking pace.
  5. Lead the turn with a small input. Apply left or right rudder and reduce it before reaching the desired heading. For a tighter left turn, add light left brake; use right brake for a tighter right turn.
  6. Straighten before stopping. Centre the steering, reduce power and brake smoothly. Holding full steering lock while stationary or moving quickly produces poor results.

A mistake we see constantly is trying to cure weak steering with more power. Extra thrust increases taxi speed and widens the turn. Slow down first, then use the tiller or inside brake if the aircraft needs a tighter radius.

Why does ground steering change between aircraft?

Ground steering changes because Microsoft Flight Simulator aircraft model several real steering arrangements rather than one universal system.

  • Tricycle-gear light aircraft: Rudder pedals usually move the nose wheel through a limited range. Differential braking helps with sharper turns.

  • Free-castering nose-wheel aircraft: The nose wheel swivels rather than being directly commanded by the rudder. Use differential braking, low power and rudder airflow to establish the turn.
  • Taildraggers: Steering may combine rudder, a steerable or lockable tailwheel, propeller airflow and differential brakes. Brake cautiously because excessive forward braking can lift the tail or cause a nose-over.

Choose rudder or linked nose-wheel steering for ordinary taxi corrections, a tiller for tight airliner turns, and differential braking when the wheel cannot turn tightly enough on its own.

Why won't the aircraft turn on the ground?

A non-turning aircraft usually has an incorrect binding, disengaged nose-wheel steering, a separate tiller requirement or a brake input holding one wheel.

  • The rudder does not move: Verify that the intended device is assigned to Rudder Axis, remove conflicting assignments and confirm that the input indicator moves through its full range.

  • Steering jumps immediately to full lock: A button has probably been assigned instead of an axis, or the axis sensitivity and dead zone need adjustment.
  • The aircraft always pulls to one side: Check both toe-brake axes for an inverted or permanently applied input. Also centre the rudder trim if the aircraft provides it.
  • The nose wheel turns but the aircraft carries straight on: Taxi speed is too high for the available steering angle and tyre grip. Reduce power and brake before increasing steering input.
