Is there a DCS World Su-30 mod, and how do I install it?

In short

Learn how to install an unofficial DCS World Su-30 mod, check Flaming Cliffs dependencies, use the right Saved Games path and fix missing aircraft.

Yes. DCS World has unofficial community-made Su-30 variants, including Su-30MK-family projects, but no official Eagle Dynamics Su-30 module. Install the correct release in your active Saved Games DCS branch under Mods\aircraft, keep the aircraft folder only one level deep, and satisfy any Flaming Cliffs dependency named by the author.

What is the Su-30 mod in DCS World?

The DCS Su-30 mod is a community aircraft rather than licensed downloadable content. Its flight model, cockpit, avionics, weapons and included variants depend on the particular release, so do not expect every package labelled “Su-30” to have the same features.

Some editions represent members of the Su-30MK family, while others concentrate on a particular national variant. Our overview of Chinese DCS aircraft add-ons and the Su-30MKK explains the relevant variant and its limitations. These aircraft are not installed or authorised through DCS Module Manager.

Which Su-30 version should I download?

Choose the release whose documentation explicitly supports your installed DCS build and matches the modules you own. Package names alone are unreliable because older, dependency-based and standalone editions can circulate at the same time.

What the package saysWhat you needBest choice when
Flaming Cliffs or a named aircraft requiredThe specified licensed and installed donor productYou already own that exact dependency
Standalone or no donor requiredBase DCS World plus the complete mod archiveYou do not own the stated Flaming Cliffs dependency
Requires changes inside the DCS installationAn exact match with the supported DCS buildOnly when the author explicitly requires it; these releases are more fragile

Do not assume “standalone” means full-fidelity. It usually describes dependencies, not the depth of the flight model or systems. Read the included instructions before extracting anything, particularly the dependency and supported-build notes.

How do I install the Su-30 mod?

A Su-30 aircraft mod normally belongs in the user-level DCS folder under Saved Games, not inside the main Eagle Dynamics installation.

  1. Close DCS World. If another Su-30 release is installed, move or delete its complete folder rather than merging new files over it.
  2. Extract the download to a temporary folder. Do not run DCS directly against the compressed archive.
  3. Find the actual aircraft root. This is normally the folder containing entry.lua alongside the mod's aircraft files. Archives often add an extra wrapper folder, which must not be copied as the aircraft root.
  4. Open the active Saved Games branch. The usual location is C:\Users\<your name>\Saved Games\DCS\. Older or parallel installations may instead use a folder such as Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\.
  5. Create the destination if necessary. The final structure should resemble C:\Users\<your name>\Saved Games\DCS\Mods\aircraft\<Su-30 folder>\entry.lua.
  6. Launch DCS and test it in the Mission Editor. Select a country supported by that release, add the Su-30 and set its skill to Player for a single-player mission or Client for a multiplayer slot.

A common mistake we see is a doubled folder such as Mods\aircraft\Su-30-release\Su-30\entry.lua. DCS generally needs the folder containing entry.lua directly beneath Mods\aircraft. Our complete guide to DCS Saved Games mod folders covers branch selection and incorrectly nested archives.

Why does the Su-30 not appear in DCS?

A missing Su-30 is usually caused by the wrong folder level, the wrong Saved Games branch, an absent dependency or an incompatible release.

  • Nothing appears in the aircraft list: check that entry.lua is at the expected folder depth. Also confirm that you used the Saved Games folder whose Logs\dcs.log file changes when DCS launches.
  • The aircraft appears but is not flyable: verify that you downloaded a flyable edition rather than an AI-only package, selected a supported country and set the skill to Player or Client.
  • The cockpit is missing or controls do not work: install the exact Flaming Cliffs dependency named by the package, or replace the mod with its documented standalone edition.
  • DCS crashes while loading: remove duplicate Su-30 versions and reinstall one clean copy. If an older package altered the main DCS directory, remove those files and run the official DCS repair tool.
  • The mod broke after a DCS update: disable it temporarily and check the release notes rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same archive. Our DCS mod compatibility checks explain how to separate an update conflict from a bad installation.

Will the Su-30 mod work in multiplayer and after updates?

A Su-30 mod can work in multiplayer only when the server permits it and the required installations match. Assume that the server and every participant need the same mod release unless the server's instructions say otherwise; missions containing an unknown custom aircraft may fail to load correctly for players without it.

Integrity-check settings can also reject community scripts or modified core files. Use a server that explicitly allows the aircraft rather than trying to bypass its restrictions.

DCS updates do not normally delete aircraft stored in Saved Games, but they can make an older Su-30 package incompatible. When updating the mod itself, delete the old aircraft folder before copying the replacement. Back up Saved Games\DCS\Config\Input first because a changed internal aircraft name can make existing control assignments appear to vanish.
