How do I set up TrackIR 5 for a flight simulator?

To set up TrackIR 5 for a flight simulator, install the TrackIR software, mount the camera facing your normal seated position, attach the correct TrackClip, confirm that all three markers remain visible, bind centre and pause controls, tune the six movement curves, then start TrackIR before launching the simulator.

This is a general Windows PC setup for simulators including Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, DCS, Prepar3D and FSX. TrackIR 5 is not a supported head-tracking controller on Xbox or PlayStation versions of Microsoft Flight Simulator.

How to set up TrackIR 5 step by step

  1. Install the TrackIR software. Install the manufacturer-supplied TrackIR 5 application and driver before configuring the simulator. Connect the camera directly to a reliable USB port; avoid an unpowered hub if the camera disconnects intermittently.
  2. Position the camera for your actual seat. Mount it on the main display and point it towards the TrackClip rather than automatically centring it on the entire desktop.   3. Fit the tracking target. Place the passive TrackClip on a cap brim, or attach the powered TrackClip Pro to the correct side of a headset. Select that same target type in the TrackIR software. Choosing the passive clip while wearing the Pro, or vice versa, produces unreliable or absent tracking.
  4. Check the camera view. Sit in your normal posture and confirm that the software sees three separate markers. Turn and lean through the movements used in the cockpit. None of the markers should merge, disappear or leave the camera view.
  5. Centre the neutral position. Look straight ahead from a comfortable seated position and use the centre command. Do this after adjusting the chair, monitor, cap or headset—not before.
  6. Bind centre and pause controls. Put both functions on buttons that can be reached without letting go of the yoke, stick or throttle. TrackIR's default function keys can overlap with simulator commands, so check for duplicate bindings.
  7. Create a conservative profile. Begin with the standard smooth profile and all six degrees of freedom enabled: yaw, pitch, roll, X, Y and Z. Adjust one axis at a time rather than changing global speed, smoothing and every curve together.
  8. Start TrackIR before the simulator. Confirm that tracking is active, then launch the flight simulator. Most supported sims receive TrackIR through their camera interface, not through ordinary joystick-axis assignments. What TrackIR 5 settings work best?

The best starting profile uses moderate yaw and pitch, restrained translation and enough smoothing to remove small involuntary movements without making the view lag behind your head.

A completely flat centre can steady the instruments, but a large dead zone makes the view stick and then jump. We usually favour a shallow central curve instead. Why is TrackIR jittering, jumping or losing position?

TrackIR jitter usually comes from unwanted infrared light, marker occlusion or an over-sensitive profile rather than a faulty simulator.

  • Extra bright objects: In the camera view, look for blobs besides the three intended markers. Direct sunlight, reflective glasses, polished surfaces and some lamps can create false targets. Shade or move the source and test again.
  • Markers disappearing: If tracking fails only when looking up, down or sideways, change the camera angle or move it horizontally towards the TrackClip Pro. Increasing sensitivity will not fix physical occlusion.
  • Small cockpit vibration: Reduce the centre portion of the affected axis and add a little smoothing. Do not mask severe optical noise with maximum smoothing, which adds noticeable lag.
  • Viewpoint creeping: TrackIR does not normally accumulate gyro-style drift. Apparent drift usually means your posture changed, the clip shifted, or one marker is being confused with a reflection. Correct the cause and centre again.
  • Random freezes: Check the USB connection, disable USB power saving for the affected port if necessary, and test without an unpowered hub.

Why does TrackIR work in its software but not in the simulator?

If the head model moves inside the TrackIR application but the cockpit remains fixed, the camera and driver are working; the fault is in launch order, game recognition or an in-simulator tracking switch.

  1. Make sure tracking is not paused and the TrackIR application remains open.
  2. Close the simulator, start TrackIR first, and then relaunch the simulator.
  3. Use the TrackIR application's game-update function so it can recognise supported simulator titles.
  4. Check that the intended profile is associated with the simulator; otherwise the default profile may load.
  5. Enable head tracking in the simulator's camera options where such a switch is provided. In MSFS, this control can be disabled accidentally from the camera interface.
  6. Close other camera or head-tracking applications that may be trying to provide the same view data.
  7. Avoid running one program with administrator privileges and the other without them, particularly when hotkeys work in one window but not the other.

Do TrackIR axes need simulator control assignments?

No. In simulators with native TrackIR support, head movement arrives through the simulator's head-tracking or camera interface, so yaw, pitch and translation should not be mapped as joystick axes. Duplicate view bindings can cause snapping, fighting inputs or a camera that moves only while a button is held.

Tune the TrackIR curves first and leave the simulator's head-tracking multipliers near their neutral values. If both applications heavily amplify or smooth the same movement, diagnosing an unstable or sluggish view becomes much harder.
