Flight lessons can teach two different things: how the software works and how to fly. Built-in tutorials are best for learning control bindings, cockpit interaction, camera use and simulator-specific assistance; a real-world training syllabus is better for sequencing manoeuvres and setting performance standards. Treat those as complementary, not interchangeable.

What order should flight simulator lessons follow?

Flight simulator lessons should progress from control setup and basic handling to complete flights, rather than starting with an airliner or a difficult approach. If your axes, brakes and view controls are not settled, use our beginner setup and first-flight sequence before attempting scored lessons.

Do not rush into emergencies. A simulated engine failure teaches little if you are still struggling to trim the aircraft or select the correct view.

How should I practise each flight lesson?

Practise one objective at a time, first with guidance and then without it. Repeating an entire flight when the real problem is poor trimming wastes time and makes the cause harder to identify.

  1. Define one objective. Use a specific target such as holding level flight after a power change, not a vague goal such as flying better.
  2. Standardise the scenario. Keep the aircraft, fuel load, runway, daylight and light-wind conditions unchanged. Disable assistance that physically moves controls for you, but retain labels or guidance until you understand the exercise.
  3. Brief the procedure. Know the intended attitude, power setting, configuration and completion standard before moving the controls.
  4. Watch one demonstration. Concentrate on the relationship between attitude, power and trim rather than memorising a sequence of button presses.
  5. Fly with fewer prompts. Remove guidance in stages, and avoid autopilot unless its operation is the lesson objective.
  6. Debrief the first deviation. Use replay, telemetry or the lesson report if available. Correct the first error in the chain, not only the poor landing that followed it.
  7. Add one variable. Change the wind, runway, weight or route only after the original exercise is repeatable.

Real-world lesson plans sometimes call for physical checks or sensory cues that a desktop simulator cannot provide. Do not pretend those checks occurred; verbalise not available in simulator, then continue with the parts that can be represented faithfully.

Should I use built-in lessons or a real flight syllabus?

A built-in lesson score is diagnostic, not proof of mastery. Passing can mean that you crossed the required trigger points; failing can mean that the script missed one even though the aircraft remained under control.

Why do I keep failing lessons, and when should I move on?

Repeated failures usually come from control conflicts, unstable setup or a missed scripted event rather than lack of ability. Check the simulator before repeating the same exercise indefinitely.

Fix the lesson first

  • Remove duplicate axis bindings, especially throttle, brakes, rudder and trim.
  • Calibrate the controls and add only enough dead zone to stop unwanted movement.
  • Check that autorudder, assisted trim or other control assistance is not fighting your input.
  • Begin with the trim, flaps, throttle and parking brake in the state expected by the lesson.
  • Follow required gates, altitudes and sequence exactly when attempting a scored tutorial.
  • Avoid slew mode, time acceleration and unscheduled pauses because they can break lesson triggers.
  • If a lesson remains unreliable, recreate its objective in a normal free-flight session and judge the flying rather than the script.

Use a performance gate

Move on when you can perform the skill without prompts on two or three consecutive attempts, explain any deviation and recover without resetting the flight. As an initial home-simulator target in settled flight, try holding altitude within 100 feet, heading within 10 degrees and airspeed within 5 knots unless the lesson specifies otherwise. These are practice targets, not licensing standards.

For landing lessons, consistency matters more than forcing every approach onto the runway. Maintain the correct configuration, speed and centreline; if the approach becomes unstable, executing a controlled go-around is a successful training decision.

What flight lessons cannot teach

Simulator lessons cannot reproduce sustained control forces, full peripheral vision, motion, fear, real weather or the consequences of poor decisions. Aircraft handling and stall behaviour also depend on the quality of the particular flight model.
