Fix TrackIR not working in DCS World with checks for camera tracking, game updates, VR conflicts, paused input, bindings and damaged settings.
TrackIR usually stops working in DCS World because the TrackIR software was not running before DCS launched, its game list is outdated, tracking is paused, the camera cannot see the clip, or another head-tracking or VR process has control. Verify tracking outside DCS first, then restart both programs in that order.
How can I tell whether TrackIR or DCS is at fault?
The TrackIR preview is the dividing line: if your head movement fails there, DCS is not the problem. Open the TrackIR software and confirm that it detects the camera, sees the clip’s three tracking points and moves the preview head smoothly.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Check next |
|---|---|---|
| Camera is not detected | USB connection, driver or power problem | Reconnect it directly to the PC and try another USB port |
| No tracking points appear | Clip is obscured, unpowered or outside the camera’s view | Check clip position, lighting and camera angle |
| Points appear but the preview does not move | Tracking is paused or the profile is misconfigured | Unpause TrackIR and test its default profile |
| Preview works but DCS does not respond | Game-list, launch-order, VR or software conflict | Restart both applications using the procedure below |
| Only one aircraft is affected | Per-module DCS input configuration | Inspect or reset that aircraft’s controls |
| Movement jumps or stops near the edges | Occlusion, reflections or excessive curves | Use camera view to identify lost or false tracking points |
How do I fix TrackIR not detected by DCS World?
A clean launch with verified camera input fixes most TrackIR detection failures in DCS World.
- Close DCS and every tracking application. Exit TrackIR as well as OpenTrack, webcam trackers and any other software that could claim the camera or provide head-tracking data.
- Reconnect the camera directly. For diagnosis, avoid an unpowered hub or monitor USB socket. If Windows or the TrackIR software cannot see the device, try another port and restart the PC before reinstalling anything.
- Check the three tracking points. The standard reflector clip and powered TrackClip Pro both produce three points in the camera view. Reposition the camera if a point disappears as you turn your head, and remove bright reflections that create extra points.
- Update the TrackIR game list. Use the game-update function in the TrackIR software so it has the proper DCS World definition. Restart the software after an update.
- Unpause and centre tracking. The usual default hotkeys are
F9for pause andF12for centre, although a profile can change them. Confirm the actual assignments in the TrackIR hotkey settings. - Start TrackIR before DCS. Leave it running, launch DCS World and load an aircraft cockpit rather than judging detection from the main menu. Run both programs at the same Windows privilege level; normally neither needs administrator rights.
- Turn off competing VR tracking. If DCS is configured to start in VR, headset tracking can take precedence over TrackIR. Disable VR in DCS, remove any forced-VR launch option and restart the simulator before testing on a monitor.
- Inspect the aircraft’s controls. In DCS Controls, select the affected aircraft and open Axis Commands. A TrackIR or head-tracker column should contain its automatic head-motion axes. DCS stores controls per module, so repeat the check in another installed aircraft.
The separate TrackIR external-view option, where present in DCS settings, controls its behaviour in external cameras; it is not the master switch for cockpit head tracking. Missing zoom, view and centre commands can also look like a tracking fault, so check the basic DCS view and recenter control setup before changing files.
Why does TrackIR move badly or keep stopping?
Jerky, restricted or drifting movement means DCS is receiving TrackIR data, but the optical tracking or profile needs adjustment.
- Points leave the camera view: move the sensor closer to your normal eyeline and angle it towards the clip. Check the full range of head movement in camera view.
- Extra points appear: sunlight, glasses and reflective objects can be mistaken for the clip. Reduce the camera’s exposure only after removing the obvious reflection.
- Movement reverses or behaves strangely: select the correct reflector-clip or TrackClip Pro mode and verify the physical clip orientation.
- Small movements do nothing: reduce an oversized deadzone or test the default TrackIR profile. A flat or heavily edited response curve can make working tracking appear frozen.
- The view snaps or fights your head: clear duplicate cockpit-view axes assigned to a joystick, mouse-emulation tool or another tracker. Keep ordinary zoom separate from TrackIR’s forward-and-back head translation.
If the default profile works, compare your settings with our ready-made TrackIR 5 profile for DCS World. Curves are personal, but a working baseline helps identify excessive deadzones, smoothing or sensitivity.
Does TrackIR need a DCS mod or profile?
No. DCS World supports TrackIR directly, so it does not require an entry in Export.lua, a replacement tracking DLL or anything in the DCS Mods folder. A profile changes response curves and hotkeys; it does not create the connection between TrackIR and DCS.
A TrackIR profile belongs in the tracking software’s profile system, not Saved Games\DCS\Mods. This distinction matters because DCS mods use a different installation process. Avoid downloading unofficial DLL files as a supposed detection fix.
What should I reset if TrackIR still does not work?
Reset DCS’s per-user input configuration only after TrackIR works in its own preview and the clean launch procedure has failed.
- Back up your controls. Close DCS and copy the DCS-named folder under
Saved Gamessomewhere safe. - Temporarily rename the input folder. Rename
Saved Games\DCS\Config\Inputto something such asInput.backup. Your DCS folder may have a different suffix if you retain more than one installation. - Start DCS and test one cockpit. DCS will create fresh control data. If TrackIR now works, the old per-aircraft input configuration was responsible.
- Restore selectively. Bring back required joystick and keyboard bindings rather than immediately restoring the entire faulty input folder.
If a fresh input configuration changes nothing, run the installation’s built-in repair or file-verification process. Reinstall the TrackIR software only when its own camera or preview remains faulty; reinstalling all of DCS is rarely the right first response to a head-tracker problem.
