Learn what a traffic alert means in aviation and flight simulators, how a TA differs from an RA, what to do, and why sim alerts can mislead.
A traffic alert means another aircraft is close enough, or predicted to become close enough, to require attention. In aviation, it may be issued by ATC or an onboard traffic system. In a flight simulator, the same warning may come from modelled TCAS, AI or live traffic, or a generic interface notification.
What kind of traffic alert is it?
The source of the alert determines both its urgency and the correct response. A cockpit announcement of “Traffic, traffic” has a more specific meaning than an aircraft icon appearing on a simulator map.

ATC terminology varies between regions, while simulator messages are not standardised at all. A generic “traffic alert” banner may be nothing more than a proximity warning.
Is “Traffic, traffic” the same as a Resolution Advisory?
No: the spoken call “Traffic, traffic” normally identifies a Traffic Advisory, not an instruction to climb or descend. A TA tells the crew to locate and monitor a potential threat; an RA supplies explicit vertical guidance such as “Climb” or “Descend”.

One mistake we see constantly is making an abrupt turn solely because an amber target appeared. Real TCAS procedures do not call for an avoidance manoeuvre based only on a TA. An RA is different, but autopilot, flight-director and manual-response procedures vary by aircraft.
What should you do after a traffic alert in a simulator?
Identify the warning first, then respond according to its actual type rather than the wording alone.
- Find the source. Check whether the warning came from ATC, the aircraft’s TCAS or traffic display, or a simulator overlay.
- Keep the aircraft under control. Do not chase a symbol or make a sudden manoeuvre while trying to interpret the display.
- Read the target information. Note its bearing, range, relative altitude and vertical trend. On displays using hundreds of feet,
+12usually means 1,200 feet above, but the aircraft documentation takes precedence. - Treat a TA as a warning to monitor. Look outside where visibility permits, watch the closure and prepare for an RA rather than manoeuvring solely from the TA.
- Respond to an RA using the modelled procedure. Follow its vertical guidance if the simulation supports realistic TCAS logic. Do not assume every add-on models automation or RA reversals correctly.

Why is there a traffic alert when no aircraft is visible?
An alert without visible traffic is often valid because the avionics data, outside view and simulator renderer are separate systems.
- The aircraft is above or below your sightline. A small target can be hidden by the cockpit structure, cloud, darkness or ground clutter.
- The warning is based on prediction. A fast-closing target can trigger an alert before it looks close outside.
- The display is being misread. Relative altitude is not the target’s actual altitude, and a trend arrow indicates climbing or descending rather than horizontal direction.
- The selected range or altitude filter hides it. Some simulated displays handle automatic range changes and threat highlighting imperfectly.
- The traffic feed and visual model disagree. An injected aircraft may reach the avionics before its model is drawn, while some multiplayer aircraft are visible outside but unavailable to the traffic system.
Why do flight simulators give false or repeated traffic alerts?
Repeated alerts usually come from duplicated traffic, incorrect TCAS configuration or simplified collision logic rather than a genuine stream of separate threats.
- Use only one primary traffic injector when possible; built-in AI and an external provider can create two aircraft on the same route.
- Confirm that the transponder and traffic system are not in standby. Typical modes include
TA ONLYandTA/RA, although labels vary. - Return from pause, slew mode or accelerated time before judging predictive alerts, as abrupt position changes can confuse simplified implementations.
- Check whether the add-on uses real closure calculations or merely a fixed distance-and-altitude threshold.

Does every flight simulator model traffic alerts accurately?
No; accuracy depends more on the individual aircraft and avionics package than on the simulator name alone. A detailed airliner may model predictive TA and RA logic, while a light aircraft may provide traffic awareness only and an older add-on may use simple proximity triggers.
Even common colours and symbols are not universal. Amber or yellow is normally associated with a TA and red with an RA, but simulator overlays can use those colours differently.
