Train Sim World VR: New York is a separate standalone Quest release. It should not be confused with a VR mode or add-on for the main Train Sim World series; owning a desktop or console Train Sim World game does not give that game native Quest VR.

For PC VR train driving, Derail Valley is the clearest choice because VR is part of the simulator rather than an unofficial conversion. How do I play a PC VR train simulator on Quest?

A Quest becomes a PC VR headset through a compatible USB connection or wireless Air Link; the Windows PC, not the headset, runs and renders the simulator.

  1. Confirm native VR support. Check that the specific train simulator lists a VR mode. Ordinary Windows compatibility does not mean the game supports immersive VR.
  2. Prepare the PC software. Install Meta’s Quest PC software and any VR runtime required by the simulator. Depending on the title, that may be OpenXR or SteamVR.
  3. Connect the headset. Use a suitable USB data cable for Quest Link or configure Air Link over a strong local network. Follow our Quest-to-PC connection instructions if the headset is not detected.
  4. Enter PC VR before launching. Start the Quest PC connection, open the required runtime, then select the simulator’s VR launch option where one is offered.
  5. Set up the controls. Some train simulators use Quest Touch controllers for levers and switches; others still need a keyboard, mouse, gamepad or specialist train controller.
  6. Tune performance conservatively. Establish a stable frame rate before increasing headset resolution, shadows, reflections or anti-aliasing. VR places a much heavier load on the PC than one desktop view.

For wireless play, connect the PC to the router by Ethernet and use the headset near a strong 5 GHz or 6 GHz access point. A wired Link connection is usually the simpler choice when wireless compression, latency or interference causes an unsteady cab view.

Can Train Sim World and Train Simulator Classic use Quest VR?

The main Train Sim World releases and Train Simulator Classic do not have native VR support, regardless of which Meta Quest headset is connected.

You can display either game on a large virtual monitor and operate it with the normal controls, but turning or leaning your head will not move the in-game cab camera naturally. Unofficial VR injectors may attempt to add stereoscopic rendering to unsupported games, but they do not create proper cab interaction or guaranteed head tracking. Interfaces can be difficult to read, performance may be poor, and simulator updates can break the workaround. We would not treat an injector as equivalent to native VR support.

Why does my train simulator open on a flat screen?

A train simulator opens flat when it was launched in desktop mode, the required PC VR runtime was not active, or the title has no native VR mode.

  • No VR launch option: the simulator probably does not support native VR. Quest cannot add VR support by itself.
  • VR game opening on the monitor: connect Quest Link or Air Link and start the required runtime before launching the simulator’s VR mode.
  • Headset detected but controls do nothing: verify whether the game expects Touch controllers or conventional keyboard, mouse and gamepad input.
  • Blurred or stuttering image: reduce headset render resolution and demanding in-game effects. For Air Link, also check signal strength, interference and network traffic.
  • Menus appear outside the headset: make the simulator the active Windows application and check both the desktop and headset views for opening dialogues.

Choose according to the experience you want and whether you own a capable Windows gaming PC.

  • No gaming PC: use a standalone Quest train simulator such as Train Sim World VR: New York, checking its store listing against your exact headset model.
  • Immersive full-size railway operation: connect Quest to a PC and use a native VR title such as Derail Valley.
  • Model railway building: consider Rolling Line through PC VR.
  • Large conventional route catalogues: Train Sim World and Train Simulator Classic remain flat-screen choices, even when viewed through Quest.
