Aircraft textures turn transparent in FSX when a texture’s alpha channel and the model’s material settings combine to request opacity blending. The usual causes are a repaint exported with the wrong alpha, an FS2004-era model behaving badly in FSX, or DirectX 10 Preview misrendering legacy materials. Restoring matched texture files usually fixes it.

What causes transparent aircraft textures in FSX?

Transparent aircraft textures are usually caused by a mismatch between the texture’s alpha channel and the material definition embedded in the aircraft model.

  • Damaged or inverted alpha channel: an image editor may strip, flatten or invert the alpha when a repaint is saved. In a conventional opacity material, white means opaque, black means transparent and grey produces partial transparency.
  • Wrong texture format: converting an original DDS or extended BMP file to unsuitable compression can remove its alpha or reduce it to one-bit transparency.
  • Incorrect mipmaps: bad alpha values in the smaller mip levels can make the aircraft become transparent only as the camera moves away.
  • Legacy model materials: some FS2004-era models use material behaviour that FSX does not reproduce correctly, particularly under DirectX 10 Preview.
  • Model-level material error: the .mdl file decides whether alpha controls opacity, reflection or another property. That behaviour cannot normally be corrected in aircraft.cfg.

Missing texture files more often produce white, black or untextured surfaces, although the exact result depends on the model. These causes and checks apply to both boxed FSX and FSX: Steam Edition.

How do I identify whether the repaint or model is faulty?

Compare the affected repaint with a known-good livery made for exactly the same model variant.

Do not compare textures from two different model variants merely because they depict the same aircraft type. Their material assignments, texture names and UV layouts may differ.

How do I fix a transparent FSX repaint?

A transparent repaint should be repaired by restoring the correct alpha channel and preserving the format used by a working texture for that model.

  1. Back up the repaint folder. Copy its complete texture folder before changing any files.
  2. Test the original livery. If the supplied livery renders normally, leave the model files alone; the repaint is the fault. If the repaint was installed manually, verify its folder and aircraft.cfg entry against our FSX repaint-folder and aircraft.cfg installation walkthrough.
  3. Inspect the affected diffuse texture. Use a simulator-aware texture utility rather than an ordinary image editor that may discard alpha data. Our guide to inspecting alpha channels with DXTbmp explains how to extract, edit and restore the channel.
  4. Copy the correct alpha. Take it from the corresponding original texture or official paint kit for that exact model. Do not automatically make every alpha white: windows, propeller discs and reflective surfaces may require deliberately graded values.
  5. Preserve the original format. Match the working texture’s DDS or extended BMP format and compression. DXT5 is suitable where graduated alpha is required; DXT1 may omit alpha or reduce it to simple on/off transparency. Do not apply one alpha treatment to diffuse, specular and bump textures because their channels can serve different purposes.
  6. Rebuild mipmaps if necessary. Do this when the aircraft looks correct nearby but becomes transparent farther away. The generated mip levels must retain appropriate alpha values.
  7. Restart FSX and retest. A full restart ensures that the changed texture and shader state are reloaded.

If restoring the original texture immediately cures the problem, the edited repaint was exported incorrectly. Reinstalling FSX itself is unnecessary.

What if DirectX 10 Preview or the aircraft model is at fault?

DirectX 10 Preview is the likely cause when all liveries work with that option disabled but show transparent, missing or incorrectly layered surfaces when it is enabled.

Turn off Preview DirectX 10 in FSX’s graphics settings, close the simulator and start it again. If every livery remains transparent with DirectX 10 Preview disabled, the blend mode is probably embedded incorrectly in the model. Texture editing may hide the fault, but the proper solution is an FSX-compatible model or corrected material definition. Avoid forcing opaque alpha onto glass and propeller textures, as that simply replaces transparency with solid windows or propeller discs.
