Transparent or see-through scenery in FSX and FSX: Steam Edition is usually caused by DirectX 10 Preview mishandling an older add-on, missing or misplaced texture files, or a faulty alpha channel. If surfaces flicker rather than remain transparent, duplicate scenery or overlapping polygons are the likelier cause.
What causes transparent scenery in FSX?
The appearance, location and timing of the fault usually reveal whether the renderer, add-on files or overlapping scenery are responsible.

How do I fix see-through scenery in FSX?
Start by establishing whether the problem affects one add-on or the entire simulator, then make the smallest relevant change.
- Identify the scope. Load a default airport and then the affected add-on in daylight. Test another season or time of day if the fault is intermittent. One broken package points to its files or materials; several older add-ons failing together points towards the renderer.
- Turn off DirectX 10 Preview. Open FSX's display settings and clear
Preview DirectX 10if that option is present and selected. Close and restart FSX. Older FSX scenery, particularly packages converted from FS2004, may use materials or ground polygons that the preview renderer cannot display correctly. If the scenery works in the normal DirectX 9 path, the add-on is not necessarily damaged. Staying with DX9 is the simplest solution. - Check the package folder structure. Conventional object scenery normally has a package root containing sibling
SceneryandTexturefolders. The Scenery Library entry generally points to that package root, not directly to itsSceneryfolder. Some installers create several separate layers, so retain their supplied structure. If FSX reports that an area cannot be found or keeps restoring a bad path, use our steps to repair the scenery.cfg entry and add-on path. - Re-extract or reinstall the affected add-on. Confirm that the archive completed without errors and that every supplied folder was copied. A mistake we see constantly is moving loose add-on textures into FSX's global texture folders. That can overwrite shared files, conceal the real installation error and make the package difficult to remove.
- Isolate scenery conflicts. Temporarily disable other airports, regional packages and replacement ground scenery covering the same location. Change one entry at a time and restart FSX after each meaningful Scenery Library change. Include duplicate airport facility files, even if they were installed as part of another regional package.
- Reset rendering configuration only if the fault is widespread. With FSX closed, back up and rename the active
FSX.cfg, then let the simulator create a clean one. A damaged per-user shader cache can also be renamed so FSX rebuilds it. Record your graphics preferences first because regenerating the configuration resets them. - Repair simulator files last. Use Steam's installed-file verification or the boxed edition's repair facility only when default scenery remains broken with add-ons disabled and a fresh configuration. Back up modified default files because a repair can replace them.
Why is only one add-on airport transparent?
If one airport remains transparent in the normal DirectX 9 renderer after a clean installation, that package probably contains a missing texture, bad alpha channel or incorrect material definition.
FSX materials use alpha data for windows, fences, vegetation and irregular object edges. A faulty alpha channel or blend setting can make an entire wall, roof or ground polygon translucent instead of affecting only the intended section. A corrected package is safer than blindly removing the alpha channel, which may destroy legitimate glass and vegetation effects.
How can I tell whether the transparency is intentional?
Intentional transparency affects a specific material, while a fault usually makes a complete solid surface see-through.
- Glass may be translucent, but frames and surrounding walls should remain solid.
- The empty spaces in a chain-link fence or around leaves should be transparent, not the fence wire, branches or trunk.
- A surface that remains steadily translucent from every angle usually has a material or alpha problem.
- Rapid flashing or alternating surfaces as the camera moves indicates overlapping geometry rather than transparency.
What if only photoreal ground scenery is see-through?
Soft, irregular edges can be an intentional blend into default terrain, but rectangular holes or large missing sections suggest a damaged file, faulty mask or conflicting ground layer.
Unlike ordinary object scenery, FSX photoreal imagery may be compiled inside one or more .bgl files and does not always require separate texture files in a Texture folder. Can Scenery Library order fix transparency?
Scenery Library priority can fix competing ground coverage, but it cannot repair a defective alpha channel, absent texture or DX10-incompatible material.
Place a replacement airport above broader regional scenery and keep general mesh below local airport layers. If changing priority affects flickering or which ground surface appears, two products overlap. If the same building remains steadily translucent, its own texture or material is at fault.
Priority alone does not always suppress duplicate airport backgrounds or ground polygons. If both continue to load, disable the unwanted package or duplicate airport file rather than repeatedly moving layers.
Why does the scenery flicker instead of staying transparent?
Flickering normally means two surfaces occupy almost the same position, an effect commonly called z-fighting.
Typical sources include two versions of the same airport, duplicate runway or apron polygons, overlapping photoreal layers and an old airport file left behind after an update. Disable the competing packages one at a time. A steady see-through surface points towards alpha or material handling; a surface that flashes as the camera or aircraft moves points towards overlap.
Should I reinstall FSX?
A complete FSX reinstall is rarely justified when only one add-on is transparent.
Reinstall that scenery first, test it without DX10 Preview and remove competing layers. Repair FSX only when default airports and objects also fail with all add-on scenery disabled, a newly generated FSX.cfg and rebuilt shader data. Even then, use the edition's repair or verification function before removing the simulator completely.
