Transparent or see-through scenery in FSX and FSX: Steam Edition is usually caused by DirectX 10 Preview rendering an older add-on incorrectly, missing or misplaced texture files, or a faulty alpha channel. If surfaces flicker instead of staying transparent, two scenery layers are more likely occupying the same position.
What causes transparent scenery in FSX?
The cause is usually DX10 incompatibility, absent texture assets, an incorrectly authored alpha channel or overlapping geometry.

How do I fix see-through scenery in FSX?
Start with DirectX 10 Preview, then verify the affected package before changing the entire simulator installation.
- Identify the scope. Load a default airport and then the affected add-on. If only one package fails, its installation or materials are responsible; if many older add-ons fail together, suspect DX10 Preview.
- Turn off DirectX 10 Preview. In FSX's graphics or display settings, clear
Preview DirectX 10if it is enabled, then close and reopen the simulator. Older FSX and FS2004-derived scenery often uses materials that do not render correctly in the DX10 preview path. A normal package root contains sibling folders such as
My Airport\SceneryandMy Airport\Texture. The Scenery Library entry should normally point toMy Airport, not directly to itsScenerysubfolder. Follow the package instructions if it deliberately uses a different structure. - Confirm that every texture was extracted. Re-extract or reinstall the package from a complete archive. Do not blindly copy its files into FSX's global texture folders; that can overwrite shared assets and make removal difficult. For ground imagery, use our photoreal scenery folder and activation checks.
- Isolate scenery conflicts. In the Scenery Library, disable other add-on airports, regional packages and object libraries covering the same location, one at a time. Restart FSX after each meaningful change. If the problem is flickering or ground bleed rather than steady transparency, follow the duplicate and overlapping scenery diagnosis.
- Reset rendering files only if the fault is widespread. With FSX closed, back up and rename the active
FSX.cfgso the simulator creates a clean one. A damaged per-user shader cache can also be renamed and rebuilt. This resets customised graphics options, so record them first. - Repair core files as a last step. Use the appropriate repair or file-verification function for your FSX edition only when default scenery is also broken. Back up modified default files because a repair may replace them.
Why is only one add-on airport transparent?
If one airport remains transparent in the normal DirectX 9 mode after a clean reinstall, the add-on probably contains a faulty texture or material definition.
FSX uses alpha information to make glass, fences, vegetation and irregular object edges transparent. An incorrect alpha channel or material blend setting can make an entire wall or roof translucent instead. Editing or converting the texture without understanding its alpha channel may remove intended window and vegetation effects, so a corrected scenery package is preferable.
Check the problem from several angles. Rapid flashing between two surfaces indicates overlapping geometry; stable translucency through the same surface points towards its material or texture.
What if only photoreal ground scenery is see-through?
Faded edges on photoreal scenery may be an intentional blend into the default ground, but rectangular holes or large transparent blocks usually indicate missing texture tiles, a bad mask or an incomplete installation.
First confirm that the scenery's texture folder sits beside its scenery folder and that the correct parent folder is active. If default terrain appears through the imagery only at one airport, test for an overlapping airport background or another photo layer.
Can scenery library order fix transparency?
Scenery Library priority can fix overlapping ground layers, but it will not repair a bad alpha channel, missing texture or DX10 material incompatibility.
Change priority only when two packages cover the same airport or region. Mesh normally belongs below local airports, while replacement airport scenery generally needs priority over broader regional scenery. If moving a layer changes flickering but not a consistently transparent object, the object's material remains the real fault.
Should I reinstall FSX?
A complete FSX reinstall is rarely necessary when only one add-on is transparent.
Reinstall the affected scenery first, test without DX10 Preview and isolate competing layers. Consider repairing FSX only if default airports and objects are also transparent in a newly generated configuration, with no add-on scenery enabled.
