How do I uninstall Orbx Central and remove Orbx scenery?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Uninstall Orbx Central safely, remove Orbx scenery and libraries, clear simulator links, and avoid deleting shared or default files.

To uninstall Orbx Central and remove its scenery, uninstall each Orbx product from inside Central first, verify that its files and simulator links have gone, then uninstall the Central application through your operating system. Deleting Central alone does not remove scenery stored in Orbx Libraries or directly inside a simulator.

This applies across Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS), X-Plane, Prepar3D and FSX on desktop systems. Console Marketplace installations are managed through the simulator rather than Orbx Central. If the distinction between a product, library and simulator link is unclear, see our explanation of how Orbx products and libraries are managed before deleting folders.

What should I remove first?

Remove the scenery through Orbx Central before uninstalling the Central application or deleting an Orbx Library. This lets Central remove the product data, simulator registration and any junction or symbolic link it created.

  1. Close the simulator. Also close configuration tools and stop any Central download, verification or update task.
  2. Back up custom changes. Save any files you personally edited inside an Orbx airport or region because uninstalling the managed product will remove those edits with it.
  3. Identify where the product came from. Central can remove products installed through Central, but an Orbx product bought through the MSFS in-simulator Marketplace must be removed through the simulator’s content library or manager.
  4. Uninstall each scenery product. Select the correct simulator in Central, open the installed product’s page and use its uninstall command. If removing everything, uninstall individual airports first, then regional or base scenery. Leave shared libraries and dependencies until no remaining product needs them.
  5. Clean up the Orbx Library. Once every product in a library has been removed, remove that library definition from Central if it is no longer required. You can then delete the empty library folder. Never delete a whole library while another simulator or Orbx product still uses it.
  6. Verify the simulator installation. Check for leftover links, scenery registrations and configuration entries using the simulator-specific guidance below.
  7. Uninstall Orbx Central. On Windows, remove it through the installed-apps section of Settings. On macOS, remove the application through the normal Applications workflow. This final step removes the manager, not any scenery missed earlier.

Uninstalling products does not remove their purchase entitlement from your Orbx account. They can be downloaded again later without buying them again.

Where should I check for leftover Orbx scenery?

Check both the simulator and the external Orbx Library because a visible package entry may only be a link to data stored elsewhere.

SimulatorWhat to inspectWhat not to delete
MSFS 2020 or MSFS 2024Look in the active Community folder for clearly identified Orbx packages or links. Products bought through the in-simulator Marketplace belong in its content manager instead.Do not delete the simulator’s official package folders or unrelated Community add-ons.
X-PlaneCheck Custom Scenery and remove stale Orbx lines from scenery_packs.ini after the corresponding product has gone.Do not delete the whole Custom Scenery folder or entries belonging to other airports, libraries and overlays.
Prepar3D or FSXCheck the simulator’s Scenery Library, registered add-on packages and clearly named Orbx scenery folders.Do not remove default scenery folders, shared modules or object libraries still required by another product.

A mistake we see constantly is deleting only the link inside Community or Custom Scenery. That stops the simulator loading the product but may leave many gigabytes in the external Orbx Library. The opposite mistake—deleting the target while leaving the link—creates a broken entry and path errors.

If Central still lists a library that has been moved or deleted, follow the steps for removing or replacing a stale Orbx Library path safely rather than repeatedly recreating empty folders.

Can I uninstall Orbx Central but keep the scenery?

Yes, most desktop Orbx scenery continues to load after the Central application is removed because Central is a manager rather than a runtime requirement. Existing package links, registrations and separately installed product components must remain intact.

You will lose Central’s update, verification, installation and library-management functions. An externally stored product will also stop working if you later move or rename its library because Central will no longer be available to rebuild the link.

What if Orbx Central will not open?

Repair or reinstall Central over the existing installation first, without deleting its scenery libraries, and then use it to uninstall the products properly. Our Central repair guidance preserves managed libraries and simulator files while addressing the common launch failures.

Manual removal should be the last resort. For each product, remove its simulator registration or link, delete the actual product folder from the Orbx Library, and clean only its matching configuration entry. Do not search for “Orbx” and delete every result: shared libraries, another simulator’s products and user-created backups may carry the same name.

How do I confirm Orbx scenery is fully removed?

The removal is complete when the product is absent from the simulator, no matching link or registration remains, and the actual library data has been deleted.

  • Central no longer shows the scenery as installed.
  • The relevant Orbx Library has released the expected storage space.
  • No matching package remains in Community, Custom Scenery or the FSX/Prepar3D scenery registration.
  • The simulator starts without missing-path, missing-library or duplicate-scenery warnings.
  • The location loads using its default or other installed scenery.

Seeing an airport or terrain after removal does not by itself mean Orbx remains installed. Modern simulators may display their own default, streamed or Marketplace version of the same location.
