Learn to use the Garmin GNS 430 and 530 in X-Plane: enter routes, fly direct-to, load approaches, select GPS/VLOC and fix tracking issues.
In X-Plane, use the Garmin GNS 430 or 530 by powering the avionics, selecting pages with the right-hand knobs, entering waypoints with the cursor, and choosing GPS or VLOC with CDI. To make the autopilot track, activate the required leg, intercept it, then engage NAV or approach mode.
What is the difference between the GNS 430 and 530?
The GNS 430 and 530 use almost identical controls and navigation logic; the 530 mainly provides a larger display with more room for maps and data.

The default units in X-Plane 11 and X-Plane 12 follow this common logic. A third-party aircraft may use a customised GNS implementation, an external GPS/NAV selector or different mouse interaction, so its cockpit documentation takes priority.
Which GNS 430 and 530 controls matter most?
The right-hand knobs, cursor, ENT, CLR, CDI and dedicated Direct-to, FPL and PROC keys perform nearly all routine GPS tasks.
- Large right knob: changes page groups when the cursor is off, or moves between fields and character positions when entering data.
- Small right knob: changes pages within a group, or selects letters and numbers while the cursor is active. Press it to enable or disable CRSR.
- ENT: accepts an entry or confirms the highlighted action. Some operations require one confirmation for the waypoint and another for activation.
- CLR: removes an entry or backs out of a page. Holding it normally returns to the principal navigation page.
- CDI: changes the navigation output between GPS and VLOC. Some aircraft provide this selection on a separate panel switch instead.
- Left knobs: tune COM and VLOC standby frequencies. Pressing the small left knob normally moves the tuning cursor between the radio fields; the adjacent transfer keys swap active and standby frequencies.
- RNG: changes map scale without altering the route.
Start with the battery, avionics master and any relevant instrument lighting switched on. Many X-Plane aircraft let you click the unit or its display to open a larger pop-up, which is much easier for entering identifiers.
How do I fly direct-to a waypoint?
Direct-to creates an immediate course from the aircraft's present position to one selected airport, navigation aid or waypoint.
- Press the Direct-to key marked with an arrow symbol.
- Use the small right knob to choose each character and the large right knob to move to the next position. Press CRSR first if the entry field is not active.
- Press ENT to accept the recognised waypoint.
- Check its name and location, then press ENT again when Activate? is shown.
- Confirm that the desired track, bearing and distance appear and that the active course is shown on the map and CDI.
Direct-to can bypass earlier legs in an active flight plan. If you intended to follow every waypoint in sequence, activate the correct flight-plan leg rather than selecting the destination airport directly.
How do I enter and follow a flight plan?
Enter a GNS flight plan by opening the active flight-plan page, enabling the cursor and adding each waypoint in route order.
- Press FPL to display the active flight plan.
- Press the small right knob to activate CRSR, then move to an empty waypoint line.
- Turn the small right knob to select a character and the large right knob to advance to the next character.
- Press ENT when the required waypoint is identified.
- Repeat for the remaining fixes, checking that similarly named waypoints are in the correct country and location.
- Activate the first useful leg. For a specific flight-plan leg, highlight its destination and use the available Activate Leg command; use Direct-to only when you deliberately want a present-position course.

How do I make the autopilot follow the GNS route?
The autopilot will follow the GNS only when the correct leg is active, the selected navigation source is GPS and the aircraft is positioned to capture the course.
- Check that the required leg is active and points towards the intended next waypoint.
- Select GPS with the CDI key or the aircraft's external NAV/GPS source selector.
- Use heading mode to turn towards the desired track at a sensible intercept angle.
- Arm or engage NAV mode and verify that the autopilot captures the course rather than remaining in heading mode.
- Monitor the CDI, active waypoint and autopilot mode annunciations after every source or leg change.
The GNS is not an airliner-style flight-management system. It supplies navigation guidance, but it does not automatically manage throttle, speed or all published altitude constraints. Vertical coupling also depends on the aircraft's instruments and autopilot installation.
How do I load an approach, SID or STAR?
Use the PROC key to select a published departure, arrival or approach from X-Plane's installed navigation database.
- Press PROC and choose the required procedure type.
- Select the procedure, runway and transition carefully; similar runway designations can produce completely different paths.
- Choose Load when you want the procedure added without abandoning the present en-route leg.
- Use Activate Approach only when ready to join the approach.
- Select Vectors-to-Final only when receiving vectors to intercept the final approach course. It bypasses the normal transition and can remove the feeder legs you expected to fly.

For an ILS, GPS can guide you towards the final approach, but the localiser and glideslope come from the VLOC receiver. For an RNAV approach, keep GPS selected; use the autopilot's approach mode for vertical guidance only when a valid glidepath is displayed and that aircraft supports its capture.
What does SUSP mean at the missed-approach point?
SUSP means automatic waypoint sequencing has stopped, either because OBS mode was selected or because the unit reached a point where sequencing must be confirmed.
At the missed-approach point, begin the missed approach as published, then press OBS to cancel SUSP and allow sequencing to the missed-approach legs. Pressing it too early can make the unit advance before the aircraft is established on the missed approach.
Why is the GNS 430 or 530 not tracking the route?
Most GNS tracking failures in X-Plane come from an inactive leg, the wrong GPS/VLOC source, OBS/SUSP mode or an autopilot that has not captured NAV.
