Does the Logitech X56 throttle work on its own?

A Logitech X56 throttle-only setup works on a Windows PC because the X56 throttle is a separate USB controller.

Connect it directly to the computer, check that Windows detects it, and assign its axes in the simulator. The original X56 stick is not required, so replacing it with a VKB flight stick or Thrustmaster stick is a normal mixed-HOTAS configuration. The same principle applies to the X55 throttle.

What counts as a compatible Thrustmaster or VKB stick?

The Thrustmaster or VKB control must be a complete PC controller with its own USB interface, not just a removable grip.

  • Integrated stick: a complete joystick with a USB cable can operate alongside the Logitech throttle.
  • Separate grip and base: the grip must be installed on a compatible base. The base, or its required external controller box, provides the computer connection.
  • Loose grip: a VKB or Thrustmaster grip alone cannot be connected as an independent USB flight stick.

A VKB HOTAS can therefore consist of a VKB stick and a Logitech throttle; HOTAS describes the control arrangement, not a requirement to use one brand. If Windows sees each component separately, the simulator can usually bind them separately.

A VKB flight stick is not a yoke: the terms describe different control mechanisms. If you are considering something described as a VKB yoke, verify the exact product and its USB interface. The compatibility rule is unchanged for a genuine USB yoke—it can share the simulator with a separate Logitech throttle.

How do I configure a Logitech throttle with a Thrustmaster or VKB stick?

Connect and test both controllers separately before assigning their axes inside the simulator.

  1. Identify the throttle connection. Use its direct USB connection or the correct matching interface, such as the Logitech yoke required by some bundled quadrants. A round connector is not automatically USB-compatible.
  2. Install the controllers normally. Follow any manufacturer-specific installation order. For Thrustmaster hardware, use our USB installation and controller-profile instructions.
  3. Test both devices in Windows. Press Win+R, enter joy.cpl, and confirm that the stick and throttle both appear. Select each device and verify that its axes and buttons respond. If one is missing, follow our Windows joystick detection checks before changing simulator settings.
  4. Assign the stick axes. Bind roll or aileron, pitch or elevator, and twist rudder if used to the Thrustmaster or VKB stick.
  5. Assign an analogue throttle axis. Use a command such as Throttle Axis, Throttle 1 Axis or the simulator's equivalent. Do not use throttle increase and decrease commands for an analogue lever.
  6. Choose single- or multi-engine mapping. Bind one lever to an all-engines axis for simple operation, or assign separate levers to individual engines when the throttle provides enough axes.
  7. Clear duplicate assignments. Remove throttle from the stick's slider or wheel. If a Logitech joystick or yoke remains connected solely as an interface, clear its unwanted pitch, roll and rudder axes as well.
  8. Check range and direction. Move the lever from idle to maximum power. If it runs backwards, use the simulator's reverse-axis option. Adjust sensitivity or dead zones only after the raw movement is correct.
  9. Save and test the profile. Use a named controller or aircraft profile where the simulator supports one. Complex airliners, helicopters and propeller aircraft may need different power-axis assignments.

Why does a mixed HOTAS produce double inputs or erratic controls?

Most mixed-controller faults come from duplicate default bindings, incorrect axis commands or an unstable USB connection—not from mixing Logitech, Thrustmaster and VKB brands.

  • Throttle jumps between positions: another device probably has a throttle axis assigned. Check every controller profile, including stick sliders, gamepads and yokes.
  • Lever gives only idle or full power: it has probably been bound to a digital increase/decrease command rather than an analogue axis.
  • Aircraft rolls or pitches without input: clear flight axes from an unused Logitech joystick, yoke, throttle mini-stick or other connected controller.
  • Throttle moves backwards: enable axis reversal for that binding. Recalibration is not the right fix for a simply inverted direction.
  • Twin throttles move the wrong engines: check the individual engine numbers in the assignments, or use the all-engines throttle axis.
  • Controller disappears or reconnects: test it in joy.cpl, inspect the cable, try a direct USB port or a suitable powered hub, and keep the device on the same port where practical.
  • Idle or maximum power cannot be reached: calibrate the device first, then adjust the simulator's sensitivity, saturation or dead-zone controls. Do not use a large dead zone to hide a badly calibrated axis.

The mistake we see most often is editing the visible stick profile while the conflicting assignment remains under the throttle, pedals, yoke or another controller. Inspect every device listed in the control options.

What if a gamepad or racing wheel (racestuur) is also connected?

A gamepad or racestuur can remain connected, but its automatic aircraft bindings may conflict with the HOTAS.

Remove any pitch, roll, rudder and throttle assignments that you do not intend to use. Steering-wheel pedals are also treated as controller axes and can produce constant rudder or brake input if the simulator creates a default profile for them.

Can I plug a Logitech throttle into a VKB or Thrustmaster stick?

No. A Logitech throttle should connect to the PC through its own USB interface or through the matching Logitech device designed to host it.

Round, DIN-style and yoke-quadrant plugs may resemble familiar computer connectors, but their wiring and communication methods are model-specific. A passive adaptor does not translate those signals. Do not connect hardware merely because the plug fits.

A yoke-dependent Logitech quadrant needs its matching yoke or an active interface explicitly designed for that exact quadrant. For a new mixed setup, a stand-alone USB throttle is the simpler choice.

Is a Logitech throttle worse than a matched VKB throttle or Thrustmaster HOTAS?

Mixing brands does not reduce basic axis accuracy or simulator compatibility when each controller works correctly on its own.

  • Keep the Logitech throttle when Windows detects it reliably, its lever layout suits your aircraft and you already own it.
  • Choose a VKB throttle when its control layout, detents, switches or configuration options better match the aircraft you fly; a VKB throttle is not required just because you use a VKB stick.
  • Choose a matched Thrustmaster HOTAS when shared software, cabling or vendor-specific functions matter more than mixing your preferred components.
  • Mix brands when one manufacturer offers the stick or gimbal you prefer and another offers the more suitable throttle.

Standard axes and buttons are assigned independently. Lighting, displays, mode switches and proprietary programming features may still rely on the original manufacturer's software or companion hardware.

Will a Logitech throttle and VKB or Thrustmaster stick work together on consoles?

A mixed USB setup that works on Windows is not automatically compatible with Xbox or PlayStation.

Consoles accept only supported peripherals and cannot use ordinary Windows drivers or configuration utilities. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro, while Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 remains limited to PC and Xbox. That platform availability does not make every PC flight control compatible.

Confirm support for the exact controller model, console and simulator before buying. Both devices must be recognised by the console; generic USB connectivity alone is not enough.
