Learn what VATSIM is, how it connects to flight simulators, what equipment you need, and how to avoid common setup and first-flight mistakes.
VATSIM is a free online network that connects flight simulator pilots with volunteer human air traffic controllers and other pilots in a shared virtual airspace. Your simulator sends aircraft position data through a pilot client, while the network carries traffic, flight-plan and voice information so everyone can fly and communicate together.
VATSIM works with supported PC simulators such as Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Prepar3D and some legacy simulators. It does not replace the simulator or fly the aircraft for you: it adds shared traffic and live ATC based broadly on real-world procedures.
How does VATSIM connect to a flight simulator?
A separate pilot client acts as the bridge between your simulator and VATSIM's servers.
- The simulator calculates your flight: It supplies position, altitude, heading, speed and transponder data.
- The pilot client sends that data: It logs into VATSIM with your account, callsign and aircraft information.
- The network distributes traffic: Other pilots receive your position, while you receive theirs.
- Controllers monitor the shared airspace: Their software displays connected aircraft and flight plans on radar-style screens.
- Voice and text carry communications: Tuning a COM radio through the aircraft or client places you on the relevant controller or advisory frequency.
Only operational data crosses the network. Your scenery, cockpit, aircraft add-on and weather remain local, so two pilots can occupy the same position while seeing different airport scenery or cloud conditions. How are other pilots displayed?
The pilot client injects nearby network aircraft into the simulator, but it does not transfer another user's complete aircraft model. Model matching maps each transmitted aircraft type and airline code to a suitable model installed on your computer.
If no good match exists, the client uses a fallback model. Incorrect liveries, generic airliners and invisible traffic normally point to missing model packages, a disabled matching file or a broken rule—not bad position data from VATSIM.
What do you need to use VATSIM?
You need a free VATSIM account, a supported desktop simulator, a compatible pilot client and a reliable internet connection.
- A PC flight simulator: Confirm that the client supports your exact simulator and operating system rather than assuming every edition works.
- A microphone and push-to-talk control: A headset helps prevent cockpit audio from feeding back into transmissions. Text communication is also supported where required.
- Basic aircraft proficiency: You should be able to taxi, hold headings and altitudes, follow a route, operate the radios and land without the controller teaching each control.
- Charts and a planned route: Controllers may assign runways, procedures, altitude restrictions and amendments.
- Optional model-matching aircraft: These improve traffic appearance but do not affect your ability to connect.
Standard VATSIM pilot clients require access to the simulator and operating system, so the Xbox and PlayStation editions of Microsoft Flight Simulator cannot run them. How do you make your first VATSIM flight?
The safest first flight is a short route in an aircraft you already know, departing from a quiet airport.
- Practise offline first: Rehearse the route, radio tuning, autopilot modes and likely approach without network pressure.
- Install and configure the client: Select the correct microphone, speakers, push-to-talk key and model-matching files.
- Prepare the aircraft before connecting: Start at a parking stand with the parking brake set. Never appear on a runway or active taxiway.
- Use a suitable callsign: Enter the same callsign in the pilot client and flight plan. It must not already be connected.
- File the flight plan: Check the route, cruising level, aircraft type and equipment entries before submission.
- Connect and check coverage: Listen to the controller's information, tune the correct frequency and make a concise initial call.
- Follow clearances and read back key items: Ask for clarification if an instruction is unclear rather than guessing.

Is VATSIM the same as built-in simulator ATC?
No. Built-in ATC is generated by software, while VATSIM controllers are real volunteers speaking to real users.
That makes VATSIM less predictable but much more interactive. A controller can change a runway, issue vectors around traffic, amend your clearance or coordinate your hand-off; coverage is not guaranteed because controllers choose when and where to log in. Disable the simulator's built-in ATC if it will issue conflicting instructions. Native AI, live traffic and multiplayer aircraft should normally also be disabled, otherwise you may see duplicate aeroplanes alongside the traffic inserted by the VATSIM client. Live weather can remain enabled.
What happens when no VATSIM controller is online?
You may continue flying and monitor the appropriate network advisory frequency, announcing relevant intentions when traffic is nearby.
Do not assume one advisory frequency applies in every region. Check the network information and local procedure for the airspace you are using. When a controller comes online, contact the appropriate position when requested or when entering that controller's airspace.
Common VATSIM problems and fixes

| The callsign is rejected | Another pilot may already be using it, or the client and flight plan may not match. Choose a unique callsign and update both. |
| ATC cannot see the correct altitude | Check the transponder mode in both the cockpit and pilot client. Some aircraft integrations do not synchronise the two correctly. |
| No controllers appear | Coverage may simply be unavailable. Confirm the client is connected before changing settings or reinstalling software. |
The mistake we see most often is joining a busy airport before learning the aircraft and client controls. VATSIM is welcoming to newcomers, but preparation matters: controllers can clarify an instruction, not diagnose an autopilot or explain an unfamiliar flight-management system while handling other traffic.
